Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

    Posted: 22 May 2021 11:20 PM PDT

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

    Opinions of post game

    Posted: 23 May 2021 02:31 AM PDT

I'm curious what people thought if the post game story line for XI, I was a little disappointed with it as I felt a lot of the character development sorta got undone. I especially felt that way with Erik's arc where you got to know about his past and his sister and then in the post game you can just solve it as though it were nothing. Idk maybe its just me but going through all of the second act with your party only to have it all undone with time travel shenanigans felt off to me

Which is the best way to play all dragon quest games in PC?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 02:42 AM PDT

    Hi!

I hadn't played a lot of dq games in my life, but when i was a child, i spent a lot of hours with DQ IX, DQ Monsters: Joker. This year, i bought the first version of DQ XI, and I enjoyed it a lot (I got 100% achievements). I love the world made by this saga, and i want to play all the games.

I'll try to start this project this summer, but I'm a student and don't have money enough to buy all platforms and games, so I decided to play all games in PC (probably streaming), and buy them in the future. However, most of them are not availiable in Steam. I'd like to play all games, including the spinoffs (such as the Monsters editions).

I played DQ I before on the mobile version, and it's fine, but I didn't like that they changed some things from the original game. I would love to be able to enjoy the experience of playing the original game.

Which is the best way to play them? Is there any place where they are available to be played in PC? I suppose that the best way will be emulating them...

    Thanks for reading :)

Do you need an internet connection to play Dragon Quest V on Android?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 07:30 AM PDT

I was thinking about buying dqV for Android however if this is the case I'll have to pass. I've heard you can bypass this with aeroplane mode on, is this true?

Concept: Dragon Quest 35 for Nintendo Switch

    Posted: 22 May 2021 10:33 PM PDT

As the 35th anniversary of dragon quest is coming up, I recently thought of a concept that is similar to Namco's battle royale games (tetris, mario bros, pacman)

Dragon Quest 35 comes to Nintendo Switch as a battle royale game, where you and 34 other heroes face off in an "endurance" test to see who can survive the longest against waves of enemies

    Avatars/ pfps will be the artwork of all 11 mainline heroes, mark of erdrick, slimes, drackys, etc;

The heroes will fight foes in an open grass field, graphics are 16 bit and are similar to 2d dq11 where all 11 heroes can be playable as characters

Available spells are heal, sizz, snooze, fizzle, midheal, and sizzle

All enemy encounters are not random, however, monsters will directly attack you, even when you are idle, and you will fight 1 to 8 monsters (which is the random aspect, however, most waves of enemies range from 1-4) The enemies are: slime, dracky, bunicorn, raven, skeleton, cruelcumber, and even the king slime

The "attack" function, which is mapped to the R-Stick, is used to increase the chance of more enemies appearing in "waves" and on the map, and even slightly increases the chances of a king slime appearing (king slime natural chance of spawning is extremely low in the game without being "attacked"), and the attacks will either go to random, most hp, most mp, and least enemies killed.

The hero does not have a level, but they do have preset stats, such as 100 hp, 50 mp

Every other successful battle, the hero will naturally regain hp and mp. As the number of heroes lessen, the less hp and mp the hero regains.

Misc: You can choose any battle theme in the menu, which is synthesized/orchestrated, intermezzo is the menu theme Let me know if I need to tweak or add anything!

Minor early-game gear location spoiler (~L10)

    Posted: 23 May 2021 04:08 AM PDT

So I'm in Heliodor for the first time, and everything I've read has said to go to the house immediately east of the church during the daytime (the one with the lady who scolds you when you open the closet), and that closet is supposed to be the location for a pair of fishnet stockings.

I've opened that closet a handful of times (first thing in the morning after resting at the church, the first time), and I don't get the stockings. Is it because I'm early enough in the game that I don't have anyone who could equip them yet? It seems odd - everything I'd read says they should be there - nothing about when you go, but I only got some pocket change. Anyone else experienced this? Thanks,

I'm playing DQIII for the first time and I'm playing on the Switch. I've reached the Baramos fight and I just can't beat him. When I loose I go and grind out a few more levels and try again. I've gone up 10 levels since I started. I think I might have an equipment problem. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

I loved VIII. Looking for my next IOS Dragon Quest experience...

    Posted: 22 May 2021 12:00 PM PDT

For a long time I was turned off by the other Dragon Quest games simply because of the battle view... I could not get over the fact that you don't see your party vs the enemy acting out their actions. Having recently enjoyed Dicey Elementalist I realized I can enjoy combat regardless of the view or format. What game would you suggest out of 1 through 6? I will probably play them all eventually. Thanks

    Question regarding current DQX sale

    Posted: 22 May 2021 12:29 PM PDT

DQX is having a 35th anniversary sale here

    https://hiroba.dqx.jp/sc/topics/detail/a57e8915461b83adefb011530b711704/

I started the Free Trial and saw this pop up. Now ik the free trial let's me play up to expansion 2. Without paying for sub. Much like FFXIV. If I buy this sale now is there a way I can just save the code/download? Or does it expire.

I'm using DQX to study Japanese so I want to take my time

    5th party character (spoilers)

    Posted: 22 May 2021 12:26 PM PDT

Put spoilers in the title as Ik it's act 1 but still.

I finished the Gallopolis section and I'm really lost as to who I should swap with Sylvando. I've heard he can be really useful at this part of the game but any advice is appreciated.
