(DQXIS) Arboria Dupe - Fully Explored

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 03:35 AM PST

After almost 500 hours and countless restarts for optimizations/pathing/2D mode data collecting/DQ challenge completion/etc. I finally got around to brute forcing the Arboria dupe to test its limits. Some previous work had been done by u/godzillahomer , but nothing was fully detailed as of yet. Spoilers below (Duh).

    The Basic Process:

The premise of the dupe abuses the Act 3 return to the past that's an intended part of the story. This duplicates whatever items you had in Act 1 Arboria. Normally this is minimally useful, as you'd prety much only get duplicates of crappy Act 1 weapons, armor, and items - but the Switch version's ability to return to previous 'checkpoints' when switching between 2D and 3D modes lets you abuse it on endgame items.

Wibbly Wobbly Time-y Wimey... Stuff... (And how to abuse it):

The core process is rather simple:

    1. Prepare the items you want to dupe in your party's inventory. Its easiest to do this before switching modes to be sure you got it right and to allow duping in Eight's inventory. Sadly you cannot dupe in Hero's inventory, so dont bother filling it. Note that equipped items count against the inventory limit of 24 per character, so unequipping everything will give you more room to use if duping seeds. This means the max number of items you can dupe at once is 24*7 or 168 - with a few exceptions.

    2. Go back to the checkpoint called "Rainbough Road". This will start you in the Snaerfelt with all 6 orbs, so you just need to trek to Arboria. This is also your chance to set upon items to dupe in Veronica's inventory if you didn't have access to her inventory before switching modes - just be sure to prepare it before heading to Arboria.

    3. Speak to Benedictus at the temple. This takes a snapshot of your characters' levels and inventories (including Eight's, which is why I said to set it up before returning). After this you're free to do whatever to your inventory.

    4. Play all the way through Act 2 until the Act 3 return to the past. This should be quicker than your first time (~2.5 hours on the repeat run) as you'll be horribly over-leveled and there are only ~27 truly required battles between the checkpoints (3D mode requires a few mount to cross areas, though) - and most are easy even the first time through. Everything else can be walked around in 3D mode and/or prevented with Holy Water/Holy Protection (in 2D mode or when sailing in 3D mode).

    5. (Optional) Collect/update items in each accessible character's inventory, and return to "Up and at 'Em Yggdrasil" to collect/update items in Eight's inventory if needed (Eight's inventory is restored at the same time as the other 6 even though its not immediately visible).

Usage Notes, Important considerations, and Optimizations:

Now that the basics are laid out, we can optimize what we're duplicating. Some items will need to be duplicated several times to reach obscene numbers (such as duping seeds to get to stats to 999 on multiple characters) so I tried simply returning to the checkpoint "Up and at 'Em Yggdrasil" (the point just after the Act 2 credits) and return to the past again to dupe an additional copy of what we already set up in Act 1 (which would make each cycle take roughly 15 minutes for an additional copy), but unfortunately the snapshot is cleared as soon as it is restored, so abusing it like this isn't possible even if switching twice (back to the original mode). This means we unfortunately need to

When duping, don't just think about what to dupe; think about what's actually worth duping. Items you can buy [for cheap] really aren't worth it, nor are weapons/equipment/accessories only 1 character can use (although for dual wielding purposes, sometimes 1 extra copy can be nice, such as with Hell Sabre, Drustain's Sword, Galaxyrang, and Scepter of Time). Items given during the story from scripted events (such as the Shield of Heliodor and Corsair Cap) will be duplicated just by repeating the story sequences, so they don't need to be added to inventories for duplication. That said, feel free to fill out whatever you can after your primary choices are accounted for. Empty spaces in inventories other than Hero's are almost a waste with consideration to the time each cycle takes - so worst case duplicate the item(s) you can sell for the most money or unbuyable materials used in a lot of recipes (like Orichalcum or Night Sticks).

When reaching the past in Act 3, everything is done as soon as your party rejoins you - including Eight's inventory even though he's not actually selectable at this point. If you're duplicating the same items again, you can go straight to step 2 in the core process to dupe the same items again.

There are several items that won't duplicate even with this method. Story items (like the Swords of Light and Sword of Shadows) are a given since they're removed form your inventory when switching modes back to Act 1. As far as I've personally confirmed, the War Drum and Benevolessence repetitive use items will not duplicate despite my best efforts. Since these additional exceptions are both Tickington-specific rewards, its probably safe to assume the few weapons you get from some of the Altar 11 battles also won't duplicate.

    Skill Seed Mass Duplication Considerations:

If you intend to reach 999 (or some other lofty number just shy of it) in multiple characters' stats, Arboria duping is the most efficient way to grind seeds. For efficiency, this method can help prepare for later loops with the least pain in the long run:

    1. Collect 24 of each seed by your preferred means (I used a combination of enemy farming and chest resetting when switching modes). This will let the numbers work out regardless of which path you take later

    2. If only focusing 7 stats or less, dump all 24 into each party member's inventories (minus Hero, who - again - won't dupe). To prepare all 9 seed types, put 18 of each seed type (including Pretty Betsy) across the 7 dupe-viable characters, which will split up some across multiple characters to fill out the inventory. This incidentally leaves 6 open spots you can use to dupe additional items, so make the most of these loops.

    3. Duplicate your inventory several times without changing out the seeds. If doing 7 or less seed types, you'll need to loop 7 times and for all 9 types you'll need to loop 9 times. If you prepared 24 or each seed type in step 1, both processes will put you at 168 of each seed (the second relying on the additional 6 you prepared in advance). The point of doing things this way is to prepare all intended seed types in rough 1/3 the number of loops preparing all seed types individually would take - and far faster than grinding 168 of each seed from enemy drops alone.

    4. Change out all 7 viable inventories for a set of 168 of the same seed. Each stat will require a different number of loops depending on what value you're targeting and how many characters you need to raise. focusing all one seed type at this point minimizes waste. To plan out what I intended to dupe, I set up this spreadsheet, so feel free to make a copy for your own use.

How much did Dragon Quest XI S sell in the west?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 02:51 AM PST

So its doing really well on Amazon, it has 1300 reviews almost 5 stars. I'm curious on how much it sold here in the west specifically. I know as a whole it sold 5.5 million worldwide which is great and amazing but how much of those sales are America and Europe? And even other territories if you wanna throw them in but mainly I want to know how much XI S sold on the Switch in America and Europe western territories, thanks for the response.

Dragon quest 3 is tough (switch port)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 04:05 AM PST

Played 1 and 2, I liked 1 but I loved 2. 1 was the classic JRPG i thought it would be. Not hard but not easy either. I thought 2 was just the right amount of difficult, it was a challenge without being overly difficult.loved the story, world layout, and the exp and gold output.

Dq3 on the other hand, it seems like a slog of a game. You don't get any experience points or gold, making leveling and upgrading gear EXTREMELY grindy, which is fine but, 30 exp and 20 gold when 1 pc of gear is 1300 gold is excessive, especially when i need to get 3 pieces of that gear. Without giving spoilers for those who i haven't played the game, I just got the kings regal crown and I'm only level 9, rest of the team is lvl 10-11.

Rant is over. Sorry for grammer, on mobile.

Does deftness actually increase critical hit chance in DQ11?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 07:21 PM PST

I'm having trouble finding a straight answer. Some sources say it does, others say it doesn't. The game says it only makes it easier to catch enemies unaware and flee, but the large amount of items and perks that emphasize deftness makes it seem more important than that.

Others say it makes it easier to steal items, which is cool but definitely doesn't seem like a priority. Is there something I'm missing here?

How long do I have left of the main story?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2020 01:10 AM PST

I just returned to heliodor with a second member of the party and beat the boss there. Just wondering how long I have left of the main story. I don't want it to end, first dragon quest game and I'm hooked. (got 5 and 8 to play for when I have finished this though, just not sure which order to play them yet)

Having trouble finding treasure (DQXI S)

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 02:46 PM PST

I'm going through each location searching for remaining treasure, and I'm on the Emerald Coast. I've found the hardy hide chest, and according to the guide I'm using, there should be thirteen gold in the hut at the end of the pier. I've broken the pot multiple times to no avail, and I know I haven't gotten it before because Erik keeps telling me there's one piece of treasure left.

Did they move the treasure around in the Switch version? I'm in act three if that's of any relevance; I can't have locked myself out of getting the supposed treasure, can I?
