Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Intro and advice on the series as well.

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

Just ordered Dragon Quest Builders 2, any tips?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:42 AM PDT

I just got dragon quest builders 2 on Switch for $36. I've never played a builders game before but thought it'd be a good distraction. I have played JRPG's before and I did enjoy DQ8 and DQ11. Any tips? What should I expect? I hear it's similar to mine craft.

    Best weapons to get DQ2

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:39 AM PDT

Sorry for making so many posts but I really want to finish this game. I'm LOVING it! Si I'm in Rendarak and grinding for a few levels. Saw a few people recommend the Falcon sword and I just got the thunderbolt blade, the prince has Erdricks sword and princess has lightning staff. I'm playing switch version, is there any better weapons to finish? Thanks!

about the ending of dragon quest 11

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 10:33 AM PDT

I wonder what happens to the hero's companions after he goes back in time to save Veronica. Do they just continue living in that awful timeline without him? or did the whole timeline get erased to the point before the fall because the hero changed everything?

After beating Calasmos, Serenica gets to go back in time and the team just stands there while nothing changed. When the hero went back in time, everything went black and we saw the history flashing along the screen because he was going to change everything. That lets me think that either, Serenica didn't change anything in Erdwins history thus preserving the normal flow of space time, allowing the hero and co to continue existing, or she creates a whole other timeline where the world is at peace since the age of heroes cause she saved Erdwin while all the main story stuff happens in the original timeline with both existing at the samw time. I just hate the idea of Serena losing not only her twin sister, but also the Luminary she swore to protect while being unable to do anything about it and live on alone while the hero has a peaceful life.

How do you reduce the likelihood of an attack missing? (XI)

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 09:27 AM PDT

It's not clear which factor it is. It can't be purely on the enemy, otherwise there will be a point you'll miss forever. Is it agility? Is it deftness?

Which Dragon Quest game to play for my first one?

    Posted: 14 Apr 2020 08:57 AM PDT

Hi! I'm entirely new to the franchise, I actually got interested to it after watching the Netflix movie adaptation of it - so all I know about Dragon Quest is basically from that. I've searched a bit about the games but I can't really decide so I figured maybe somebody could help me here. I'm not a big fan of turn-based battles (which is why I never tried this franchise for the longest time, I have finished all Pokemon games tho lol except the latest one) but I LOVE story-driven games and while I couldn't appreciate fully (as someone who has played the DQ games would) seeing the characters in the Netflix movie, I was really moved by it and could totally relate to it in ways I won't explain due to spoilers (basically made me remind of all my RPG experience). Ideally, I would like to play ones on the 3DS or maybe DS (I worry I might be put off if I start with the older ones) but if you guys suggest that I start from the older ones, I'd go for it as I would hate more to miss out on the full experience than to drag myself through dated gameplay.

I think i'm going to buy my first Dragon Quest game

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:56 PM PDT

I have always loved JRPG's but never played many of them. I know it sounds silly the only JRPG's I can remember playing and really enjoying are

    Lunar

Xenogears (never got to finish it)

    Pokemon games

Final Fantasy games (I was too young to finish any of them)

and now that I'm an adult (28) I want to get back into JRPG's and I think I want to start with DQ11

It was between DQ11, Ni No Kuni 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and any Final Fantasy game I can find on Steam.

Can anyone help me find the first right JRPG to play? Is it DQ11 or should I start with another one I listed? If I start with DQ11 which game would you recommend for after I finish it?

I cant wait to start grinding and enjoying a story. I was about 11 or 12 when I plays Lunar and Xenogears and remember really loving the music and just everything about it. Too long ago to remember why I never finished them. I also never finished any Final Fantasy game so I definitely want to dive into those games. Please help me create a list from 1-3? with 1 being the first I should play without going too far back.

I own a very high end PC and a Nintendo Switch. If I go with DQ11 I am really considering getting it on PC for better frames and graphics but sucks that I will miss out on speeding up battles and new music ect. I dont take my switch out so don't see much benefit to getting it on that as I usually use the switch for exclusives.

Also any way I can buy DQ11 discounted on steam? It's still $60.00

Dragon Quest 2 did I miss Moon Crest?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:41 PM PDT

Before asking my question I wanted to say I enjoyed so much going to the same castle where I fought the Dragon Lord in DQ1. This world feels so much bigger!

Question is: I went to Dirkandor (I'm playing switch version) and spoke to the king and then fought the beast. I killed it and didn't get the moon crest. What am I missing? Thanks

Regarding character names in Dragon Quest 5

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 05:07 PM PDT

I just finished playing this game and realized that the hero's son is named Parry after Harry and Pankraz two of the most important people in the hero's life. His daughter is named Madchen, after Madalena and probably some other lady. Am I reading too much into it? Are they just really dumb names or is there a reason behind them.

What level should I be to fight calasmos?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 09:29 PM PDT

So I picked up DQ11 again after dropping it back in fall. I know I was in the phase where you travel Erdrea to get strong enough to face calasmos, and I have both the supreme sword of light and super sword of light equiped on my hero, but I think I'm severely underleveled at level 54. What level do you all recommend I get to before I even dream of fighting Calasmos?

Prediction: Dragon Quest XII will be "different" than the usual Dragon Quest game.

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 09:02 PM PDT

After DQXI being a trowback to the SNES games and Hori saying he might want to spice things up next time, im kind of expecting DQXII to be a diferent experiencie than we've used to, of course turn based battles will not go away im not talking about that.
I could the game easily have a more serious/dark story than previous installaments, and also have a diferent story structure that we've used too horii also mentioned tweaks in the game mechanics so we could expect something new gameplay-wise.

Story-wise: what if our party that went castaway in a bunch of islands and you have to find all your members? the towns are made up by islanders, what if our party are students from an academie that eventually leave and explore the world? what if our hero is the descendant of the demon king this time around? idk lots of posibilities.

All im sure is that XII will bring a breath of fresh air to the series while still retaining it's turn based roots.

DQ: XI how far into the game is sea gates?

    Posted: 13 Apr 2020 07:23 PM PDT

I tend to play games slowly, and I'm at about 25 hours and just opened the sea gates. I'm trying to figure out just how far into the main story this is to determine how much of the game I have left. Am I even out of act 1 yet?
