Finally beat Dragon Quest XI (Spoilers, obviously)

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 05:20 AM PDT

Two or so years ago, I beat my very first Dragon Quest games, I and II, respectively, on the GBC, but I really wanted to beat a "contemporary" DQ game. When XI was released I finally had my chance, but somehow I abandoned it somewhere during the second act. Then the Switch version came along. I got the game on release day, and I even finished up Act 2, but stuff happened. However a couple of weeks ago, I finally got in a couple of play sessions, and yesterday I finally beat the last boss of Act 3! To be honest, I didn't even know I had to weaken him with by using the Sword of Light as an object at first, and got my ass kicked repeatedly until I finally looked up a guide. Then it was smooth sailing, really, as I had already beaten all of Drunstan's trials before.

So, now I'm ready for more! I've already bought DQ3 for the Switch. I really wanted to play the SNES fan translation, as the game is much more prettier (animations), and I even own the Japanese version physically, but the convenience of the Switch version was too much of a temptation. Though I have to admit, I'm currently also very tempted to finally play Dragon Quest V on my DS.

That I finally beat my first dragon quest game! Final boss of dq8 literally had me on the ropes each turn.

    Are falcon weapons good?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 07:03 AM PDT

Hi, I'm playing through dq11 and have got to the point where you get the magic key. I used it to get the falcon sword and falcon knife, which I know are really good, but from what I read online they seem to not be as effective in this game. Are they worth using or should I use other weapons?

Which version of dragon quest XI should I play?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 02:10 AM PDT

So I've recently went on a stint where I've Ben actively searching out old retro grub based games. While during this excursion I came across the dragon quest series and absolutely fell in love with Akira Toriyama's art style and visual flairs. Also it covered all of my check boxes for good turn based game: fluid fun combat, good stories, fun and interesting characters, and it's accessible. So I decided to pick up the most recent (to my knowledge) and most visually interesting to me, that being XI. However, after doing research into the game I found out it has a digital edition of light on the pc, and a definitive edition on the switch. I have both consoles and am fine with playing it on either, however, both had draws that I wanted. The PC version is just graphically far better than switch, for obvious reasons, and has no frame cap. The switch has Japanese voice acting, an orchestral score, 2d mode, and that one town that's in the 3ds version no one talks about, it's also has some quality of life improvements but I don't really care about those. Since I'm someone who does really care about graphics and frame rate, I'm leaning towards the pc release, but the switch seems better than it in most every other area. So my question is, which version is the better version than the other? and also in the case of the PC release, are there mods to remedy the voice acting being in English and the midi music?
(I'm ignoring the ps4 one here because while I have one it's an original one, and I'd rather have the higher quality of the pc if I'm not getting the content from the switch)

Help with Dragon Quest 3 and the merchant quest

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 10:51 AM PDT

How long does it take until I can get my party member back?

I am at the part where a lonely old man ask for a merchant to build a town for him. I done it but I want to get my party member back for the quest in Manoza since I am having problems with the boss fight. Currently me and another party member is at level 30 and one is on level 24.

Has there been any word on further Switch ports of old Dragon Quests?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 06:51 AM PDT

1-3 are great, but 4 is the one that really gets my nostalgia engine revving, and I've never had the chance to play 5 or 6.

Any news anywhere of any others coming to the Switch?

End of Act 1 Dragon Quest 11

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 03:59 PM PDT

So, I am a first time player for this series, so bear with me. How did you feel after Act 1? I really love the story and the end of Act 1 was, well....surprising, frustrating, and pretty heartbreaking. This is all based off of my personal opinion. I would love to hear your opinions as well. I haven't played in a couple weeks because honestly that scene messed me up emotionally in a way and I had to take a slight break. Anyway, I can't wait to see your comments and also some advice would be pretty cool too for a new player. Thanks!

    Is overleveling bad?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 09:18 PM PDT

I hear that jade and rab start of at level 23 but i just got to the ruins and am around level 25. Is it bad if the level difference is large?

    Standout Dragon Quest Games?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 10:22 PM PDT

I played Dragon Warrior as a kid, got all 4 for the NES and loved them to pieces (I was particularly fond of 3). Whenever it was that the English patch came out, I finally got to play DQ5, and was shocked at how good it was, despite its age. However, I never got into DQ6: it felt like too much of a departure from what made the series great, despite having a great job system and great graphics.

Seeing DQ11 on Steam, I bought it and am almost 100 hours in, and I'm loving it. Yeah, I think they overdo the silent protagonist thing, and yeah, the villains are one-dimensional, but there's a lot of charm in this game.

I've always been a Nintendo guy, and thus never had the chance to play DQ 7-10. Are there any particular installments I should make sure to play? Are you aware of any ways to play them other than PS?

Ive just got into the dragon quest series a few months ago but playing Dragon quest xi and a few weeks ago ago watched the cgi animated that was based the the fifth game. Favorite DQ area stories?

    Posted: 08 Jun 2020 12:08 PM PDT

Personally, I find Dragon Quest is a masterclass in the short story. Every town/rest area is a brilliant little snapshot of storytelling, and it's a great testament to the series that it can sort of gutpunch you so well time and again without making you complacent and apathetic enough to stop playing the games. And I'm not necessarily talking about plot connected events, just the little side stories that have very little to do with the bad guy's masterplan. Otherwise the entirety of DQ5 would be here.

Let me share some of mine here:

    1. Dragon Quest IX, Coffinwell- DQ9 could have an entire post dedicated to ranking how well each fygg story punches you in the gut. Luckily, out of all of them this is the one I'm going to put on the list (Marionette and Corvus would be if this were a fair world where 9 wasn't the 9th game released- more on that.) But the concept of giving you the victory, then taking it away- not making the victory ambiguous, you honestly won- punched harder than most games ever could. It's not the heaviest hit in DQ9, but for a veteran player it's a somewhat unexpected twist in a series where the protagonist has a chance to redeem all the terrible things that happen for a nice open-shut game.

    2. Dragon Quest VI, the flying bed- Dragon Quest VI has quite a few really strong adventures in short stories. This one gets the pick as it really uses it's dream-real world mechanic to hit you- Sick kid, last wishes; but perhaps the one that hits you hardest is the realization that hits you after you finish- coming back to town as you realize the Dog and his dream to be human JUST to say goodbye to the dead kid, something he could not do in real life. The Marionette storyline from 9 would take shades from this.

    3. Dragon Quest IV, Rose's Tower- Okay, so maybe we're breaking the rules a tiny bit, but this is where gut punching short stories really started. 3 had wonderful overarching plots and the occasional strong short(faerie princess who married a man). This one took it to a whole new level by really making Psaro a relateable villain unlike his predecessors. Really paved the way for Corvus later on.

    4. DQXI, Sylvando's Interlude Story- This one got so much praise when it came up, and it's easy to see why. Taking a moment to bring back the DQ4 format for the extended section paid dividends by giving us this gem as perpetual smiler Sylvando really grew into his own as a character with incredible depth.

    5. Dragon Quest 8, Empyrea- Again, a little cheating since it's somewhat part of the plot(though in the grand scheme does open and shut itself as a story instead of being completely open ended to the plot), but the ending of this short story is so powerful, and the music REALLY drives home the saddness in one of the great moments in of the series. Utterly beautiful.

A few others stick out- Amos's story from 6, Lora's rescue from 1, Becoming a king in 3... but yeah. This series is built on some great short stories. Love it.
