Would it be better to do no armor mode with stronger monsters or no?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:46 AM PST

I'm enjoying dragon quest 11 on stronger monsters and want more of a challenge but idk if it's super Grindy with no armor. Also does no shopping also make it so that I can't instabuy materials while forging?

    Dragon Quest 11 conundrum

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:20 AM PST

Okay so I'm about 8 hours in the game. I don't even remember where I left off but lemme say this. I'm REALLY struggling to play this game. I went into this game with extremely high expectations because of all the buzz around it. I had a few friends who told me It was incredible. Now let me say this I'm a big fan of JRPGS. Usually the JRPGS have great stories, great characters, good villains, Etc.. so far I don't feel any of that. And the sucky part is, I really want to. I'm dying to get invested in a JRPG again. But idk what's happening with me with this game. Like I'll play it for 40 mins, turn it off for weeks/months. Then wanna give it more chances. And that happens a lot. So let me ask, does it get better? Am I missing something? Just curious to hear some feedback cuz I'm trying

I wish getting pepped-up changed The Hero’s appearance in DQ11.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:45 AM PST

A great feature of DQ8 is that The Hero pretty much went Super Saiyan when he got pepped-up. Just too bad something similar doesn't happen in DQ11. No less a fantastic game though!!!

    Question about DQXI

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:35 PM PST

Is it hard to grind in Dragon Quest XI? I played the demo some time ago, and there were very few monsters in the areas that I've been in, is there any item that makes more monsters appear? Grinding is the main reason I play jrpgs and I wonder is this a problem in this game.

Playing DQXI Blind in 2D: Initial Impressions

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:22 PM PST

    Hi All,

I had previously made this post, but figured that since I've actually started the game it's a decent excuse for a new one.

I love the soundtrack, but it took me a bit of fiddling to figure out how to go about lowering the volume. I appreciate the orchestral music, but it was a bit overwhelming while trying to listen to my screen reader at the same time.

Navigation is a little difficult. I'm just using the PS4 D-pad, but it occasionally seems like it's easy to end up in situations where the exits are narrow, or at least not always easy to find. I'm kind of stuck in the first area, killing slimes and needlers, because I'm not sure where exactly I should be going.

I can foresee this will continue to be a problem unless I get used to it. :)

As another note, it's not clear where things like chests are, so I can easily miss them. This is probably just a situation where I need to hit X repeatedly to interact with every obstacle in case it happens to be actionable, but it's quite tedious.

Are there any other settings folks might suggest toggling, or tips for exploring? I have found some DQ walkthroughs but they are a little hard to apply to what I'm experiencing if only because I don't really have the visual context for what's going on. I don't like having to consult a guide for everything under the sun in any case.

Thanks for any ideas. This is slow going, but I'm hopeful.

Some simple questions about the combat in DQXI

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 05:15 PM PST

It might be a bit late, considering I'm 50h in, but there are some things I'm wondering about:

    1. Do monsters have elemental weaknesses? I feel like they should have them, since otherwise there's no difference between fire/ice spells, but I don't think it's possible to see this anywhere.

    2. Can you check in-game whether a certain enemy counts as metal/dragon/undead/etc. for the purpose of those skills and equipment that deal more damage to a certain type of enemy?

    3. Is it worth using stat raising/lowering skills? The game doesn't tell you the amount by which they raise your stats/lower the enemy's, so it's kind of hard to gauge their effectiveness. Related to this - is it better to use a debuff on an enemy or a buff on yourself (example: lowering an enemy's attack vs raising your defense)?

Forgive me if this is common knowledge, but I'm new to the series, lol.

Enemy randomly doing massively higher damage?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 03:57 PM PST

So I've been play DQ4 and I just had a weird encounter with some Chillanodon's. Mainly they used cool breath on me which did around 8-12 damage to each party member on average. But then one of them did the same move and it was doing almost 50 damage per character. Am I missing something? There was no buff or anything on the enemy so why is it randomly doing 5x the damage for the same attack?

edit: nvm was looking up info on the enemy type and it seems that it has two different attacks cool breath and chilly breath but one does high damage and the other doesn't. So I'm guessing I just mixed the two attacks up with each other.

Are DQ 1 and 2 worth playing without a guide?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:56 PM PST

I generally don't enjoy playing games that kind of "require" a guide but I played 8 and 11 and am interested in seeing some older ones. I was told 1 and 2 would be very difficult without one but I was able to get through FF1 just fine without. Ideally I'd play all the numbered games in the series (by some point) but wanted some insight if people had any. Thanks in advance

Edit for clarity: The primary reason I ask is I was told DQ3 would be manageable without, but I know they're meant to be part of a trilogy, so my real question is are DQ1 and DQ2 important to my overall appreciation / understanding of DQ3 that I should play them regardless of whether I can do it with a guide?
