    Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Special

    Description

    May 27th is Dragon Quest Day, and to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the series, Square Enix will broadcast a special showcase of all of the latest information about current and upcoming DQ games and media.

    For the first time in DQ history, the presentation will feature live interpretation from Japanese, so that international fans can stay up-to-date with developments in the series, too.

    When is it happening?

    The stream is set to start on Wednesday, May 26th, 2021 at 8:30PM PDT (11:30PM EDT)

    Where can I watch it?

    Dragon quest games almost always feel like dragon quest, but Final fantasy doesn't always feel like final fantasy...

    I wanted to discuss this, so to go into detail, DQ ganes always have that amazing art style we love from Toriyama, and the Yuji Horii game design touch to them that we love. The developers know what we want and they make every game interesting in its own way without ever changing the core mechanics. That's what has put dragon quest above final fantasy for me in recent years.

    Now, final fantasy on the other hand, not to sully the name, I LOVE final fantasy. One of my favorite series, you can prolly tell from my username even. But, in a way, 1-5 (and 9) felt one way, and 6-8 felt completely diffrent. Though, they all still fell like they could be final fantasy, and I live them all for diffrent reasons. 6-8 went for a more fantasy sci-fi futuristic style, but 1-5 (and 9) went for big fantasy. Now, 10 was the last one that felt like no matter what, this is still final fantasy. And even that was a BIT of a stretch. Final fantasy post 10 on felt like a totally different series. Still good, but when I see a new game, I think, that doesn't feel like any character I know and love, and it'll be hard to really get into them for me, especially being more action based now.

    But with DQ we know the art style and we can anticipate the amount of fantasy used before the game even comes out. It's amazing, and yet they always make new things to keep each title interesting and not repetitive despite being an absolute classic every time a new DQ is released. With a really cartoony, yet serious-respect demanding art style, it's approachable really easily and it feels like a game for made for people like ME unlike modern FF games which feel like they were made for a more mature audience no matter how old I am. I can be 20 and it feels like it's for a more mature audience, I can be 30 and it still feels that way. I live the games but it almost feels like even if a new DQ and a new FF came out with the same game to beat time and amount t of hidden content, the FF game would be less approachable and feel like I'm getting into something big and jumping right into the deep end. With DQ I can really slow down and enjoy the story and gameplay evenly without feeling overwhelmed. The pacing of DQ games is also so much more on point. While FF likes to be a slog for hours then throw it all in your face. (Bar DQ 9 which has like 5 scenes of massive lore dump and the rest is kinda slow and insignificant but I love the game nonetheless)

    I almost feel bereft, now it's over

    I hadn't played much DQ before. I bought VIII on the PS2 years ago and hardly touched it, had a go on IX on a flashcart on my DS, neither time did I feel drawn in. I bought XI on the PS4 in 2018 off the back of its Metacritic rating, got to Sylvando and kind of got bored.

    Recently I saw Tim Rogers's review of the game, and it made me re-assess the way I should approach it. I am so pleased I did.

    What a wonderful game. Literally, it is full of wonder As a newcomer to the series, I could see and feel thirty odd years worth of game-making experience and lovingly-applied touches in every element of the game.

    There were more than a few moments that took my breath away. Summoning Cetecea for the first time, stepping onto Sylvando's ship and hearing the Sea Breeze theme, Rab recanting the story of Dundrasil's demise and the hero's parentage.

    Some genuinely heart-wrenching moments too. First approaching the heart of Yggdrassil, finding Serena alone in Arboria after realising Veronica is gone, releasing Irwin from his torment.

    My word. It was just marvellous.

    Do equipment buffs work one non-active party members?

    Basically, I am farming seeds of strength and have managed to get 8 bunny tales for my active party to increase drop rates (I also have the uniforme chic des medallies x3 and the pirate king pendant).

    I am wondering whether I should farm another 8 bunny tails or so and equip them to my non active party members? Will this make a difference?

    Also any other tips on how to speed this process up is welcome, I assume getting my MP to max will be best done first as it reduces trips to camp to refill it.

    I calculated I need around 2.5k strength seeds to max out everyone's strength, is that correct?

    All characters are level 99 of course

    If by some miracle they announce a remake of DQIX during the anniversary stream and I mean not just a port but a straight from the ground up remake, is there anything from the original game that you would like changed or updated?

    Of course we want better looking visuals which we will no doubt get if it happens but what else? Voice acting for NPC's in cut scenes? Skills and spells being carried over when you switch between classes/vocations? Online multiplayer? A glamour like system so you could equip yourself with the strongest weapons/armor in game, but you could appear to be wearing a bikini for example? Changes to some quests to make them easier or harder to achieve?

    Granted I haven't played this game in a loooong time so apologies if I have got anything wrong, but I would like to hear what others would like to see from a potential remake of this game :)

    I need some extreme help please! (DQ5)

    So someone told me that my mother was born in Loftwing. I know where it is on my map. I just can't even for the life of me figure out how in the seven hells I get there. Please tell me where to go lol.

    To clarify, all of this was after I and Bianca were turned to stone and stayed like that for 8 years for my children and Sancho to find me and turn me back to life. I already revisited Coburg. I heard a guy say there's cave with something important in it but he strongly recommends I don't go. I assume in order to progress, I go to that cave, don't I? Well I find a cave I never went to, but in it there is locked door and I have ZERO keys at all. Please again tell me what to do. Thank you.

    Personally I'd rework the pep up system from dq 11 (a bit too random for me). I'd add a class system like dq 7, and maybe a bigger world to explore (the overworld in dq 11 felt super linear and restricitive).
