Going from III (my first full DQ playthrough) to I is kind of a trip, since all the prequel-allusions are reversed

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 03:37 AM PDT

A few weeks back, I completed my first-ever full playthrough of a Dragon Quest game via the Switch release of III, which I loved.

I started the original earlier today. It's kind of a trip recognizing characters, items, and locations from encountering them in the prequel, knowing it was supposed to be the other way in the round. Even small things, like the old man who cures curses in Radatorm/Tantagel had me like, "Oh! I guess the kid from III really did grow up to be able to cure curses!," even though the intended reaction was obviously supposed to be recognizing the child in III as the old man from I.

Even when obtaining things like the Soldier's Ring, I'm like, "Oh! I guess that would have been (my soldier)'s. Neat."

Not much else to say about this, other than it being a unique, unintended way to play through the series. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

(Gameplay-wise, I'm enjoying the original as well. It does feel easier than III, but engaging in a different way--less in-battle strategizing, and more resource-management and risk-assessment as you weigh how far you can go into new areas/making decisions about pressing forward or backtracking given its limited save points and difficulty of re-navigating dungeons.)

Anyone think the six Spectral Sentinels (And Mordegons other servants) from Dragon Quest 11 are similar to the 7 deadly sins?

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 11:27 PM PDT

I noticed after looking at all of the Drustian trials that the six senitiels seem to be based off (or just similar to) Seven Deadly Sins.

Jaspar - Envy (I know Drustans counterpart is called "Overweening Pride" but envy fits a lot better for him)

Tyriant - Vanity (Clearly boasted about how important he was before fighting the player. Was gonna do Pride but chose Vanity which was one of the original 8 temptations before the 7 deadly sins we know today were established.)

    Alizarin - Wrath

    Booga - Lust

    Glydygga - Greed

    Indigus - Pride

There's also others who served Mordegon too.

Avarith - Gluttony (Was taking everyones prized possessions though the English name seems to come from the word "Avaritia" meaning Greed.)

Jarvis - Sloth (Only one to have others do most of the work for him)

Dora-In-Grey - Sorrow (Once again one of the original 8 deadly sins until it combined with Sloth and Envy was added.)

I was thinking this would be the case but it's likely not. Tyriants post-game counterpart is called Blind Hatred (Which would fit in more with wrath) and Indigus counterparts are based off fear/despair and chaos (Which would fall under sloth). The japanese names for the counterparts of Glydygga (War King), Booga (Imperial Emperor), Jasper (Mysterious Genie) are also not related to sins. I think I saw the 6 sentinels might be based off 6 other characters from another story according to the Japanese wikia so this may just be a coincidence but I think it's a good comparision.

    DQXI Post-game

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 09:36 AM PDT

Just got to the post game content for DQXI. I'm kind of not liking the direction it's going, though. I don't enjoy the fact I have no choice (or illusion of choice) in whether I should go back in time to save Veronica. The whole premise of the post-game seems to be to save her and I don't actually want to do that? Anyone have struggle with this being the hinge upon which the post game pivots?

Edit: getting downvoted for having an opinion on a story point really sucks. I love the game and plan on playing the end game content. Not enjoying a plot point shouldn't get me in the negatives. I expected this community to be a bit more supportive considering all the other posts on the sub.

    Hats list?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 08:37 AM PDT

Okay I am missing one hat on my item list. It is dq11 switch version. In alphabetical order, it is third, just after bandana. The only thing I can find that would fit there is the "black cat hat" but that is only on 3ds as far as I know?

I always die so fast and it's really hard to beat, I've been using Hendrik and spamming unbridled blade on boodica and her backup.

So did you lie to Michelle or not? SPOILERS... In case that wasn't really obvious from the question alone.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 02:31 AM PDT

On my original run on the PS4, I was honest. Was shocking to see a LITERAL ON SCREEN SUICIDE WHERE A GIRL DISINTEGRATES in such an otherwise happy seeming game up until this point. But then act 3 happens, and well, suddenly my choice in that plot arc felt retconned seeing as she is again alive AFTER the world tree parts of act 1 (whereas she killed herself before that part in the plot if you're honest).

So this time on Switch, I lied to her. Figured it will tie into act 3 better this time at least, won't feel like such a big plot hole this time around. Definitely had far less emotional impact this time though, no sad scene or suicide or anything. But still, I'd like my choice with her to actually feel like it ties into act 3 instead of just getting contradicted.

There’s a new necromancer class in dragon quest x but...

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:12 AM PDT

I need to buy the new expansion pack to play that class. It's the fifth expansion and I haven't even gone through half of the story from the third expansion pack let alone any other content from the third expansion. I don't really wanna spend $35 just to play another class, cause I'd prob won't have time to get to do anything else from the fifth expansion pack other than that. But, I have been hoping for a necromancer class in dqx for several years and it looks rly dope.

So should I buy the expansion pack or nah?

If any of you guys are interested this is the new class: https://youtu.be/i_gz0Tl5atc

    About the Sudo Nim books

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 12:22 PM PDT

Just finished the books to find out that Sudo Nim was Chalky! I love how much the game rewards you for investigating each town so thoroughly, the attention to detail is amazing.

Also I can't believe I didn't figure that pun out earlier.

Jasper DQ XI Switch [Major Spoilers]

    Posted: 25 Oct 2019 05:01 PM PDT

So I always found Jasper interesting, and was upset at his initial death, but boy did they make it even more devasting post game. I've never had a battle in a game where I just cried the entire time because it was so painful to watch. The fact that he was lured to darkness by purposefully making him feel inferior and that Hendrik never noticed made it so much worse. God, it was so sad. I was really hoping he'd come back to life only to be completely crushed. Absolutely incredible though. It's been over 24 hours and I still can't stop thinking about it. Also I don't know how it is with the English audio as I've played the whole game in Japanese. But the way the battle goes was just so hard to watch. The way he slowly loses it and begins attacking himself and being unable to fight back while Hendrik continues to blame himself is just something I'll never forget. Such an incredible game. Also was really happy he was able to find peace in the end. Just wish he could've also been saved.

What is the theme that plays during the initial loading Screen? (DQ11)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 04:05 AM PDT

It's really hard to find the song that you're looking for in this OST lol, any help would be appreciated!

It is the song that plays when you boot up the game and it gives you a summary of what has happened so far.
