DQ11 S was my first Dragon Quest. Just finished it all up tonight.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 05:01 AM PDT

About 110 hours, have done 99% of the content (haven't done the Jackpot Quest, or the secret Harma trial). Standing here in Cobblestone just thinking back over everything after finishing up the Post-Calasmos Tockletown stuff. What a game.

I'm a big JRPG fan (got pulled in as a teenager by FF8 when that came out) , but have always really only kept one eye on DQ. Had a window in my gaming calendar waiting for Death Stranding, so I tried the demo when it dropped.

A slow start, at first I was a bit reticent but the charm won me over early. I just found it really refreshing to have such a back-to-basics style of JRPG with straightforward tropes and shallower archetypes (I'll come back to this!), and by-the-numbers spell & ability based combat. I really enjoy how FF likes to take risks and try new things, but I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed a break from that. By the time I'd had a chance to play with a full party and the demo ended I was sold.

Act 2 really pulled me in good. While I'd liked the characters and gotten to know them a little, this was where the archetypes stepped back more and they really began to come out as real people. The rest of the game evolved the same way and it really made me appreciate the slow, subdued start. From then on it was a genuinely captivating ride with characters I was invested in. Won't bang on about Postgame but that was an exponential continuation of the jump from Act 1 to Act 2.

I'm really impressed with the dedication to mechanical character development and how the skill trees changed to reflect the emotional and developmental states of the characters in the narrative. Reverting your progress with the trip back in time and sticking to it for a while was a gutsy move but one the game had earned by the time it sunk in. They also kept it around just long enough to make you work around it, before giving you your levels back. Very finely managed.

I'll have very fond memories of this game and now I really understand why there's such a passionate fanbase! It's been fun reading up on the first trilogy to understand all the connections and what's going on.

    [Spoiler] DQXIS(witch) post-game; is 100% worth it?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 05:27 AM PDT

So, I'm at the point in the post-game where the hint of "seedlings" has been given, to be fairly vague. I sort of spoiled myself with what little of the actual story is left by going through the large FAQ on GameFAQs and I was surprised by just HOW MUCH side quest business is potentially left.

Helping people around the world, the trials, Tickington (particularly things you can't do in Act 2), not to mention the bestiary.

    Has anybody done this?

Is it worth the time? (might take me longer as it certainly sounds like the trials battles skyrocket in difficulty)

Do you get anything for it? (assuming not)

Is there even a defined list of what counts as 100%? (as in, does forging all the possible items count too??)

As the title indicated, I'm playing on Switch so I know the target shooting is omitted.

    Thanks in advance! :D

Missing monster entry for Dundrasil region.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 10:16 AM PDT

I'm trying to complete the defeated monsters list, and I've come unstuck at Dundrasil. When I check by "View Monsters by Region", it's the first monster on the list, and it's the only monster in the region I haven't seen/defeated.

Does anybody know which monster it is?

This game is amazing(70 hours in)

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:50 PM PDT

I just beat Gyldygga or whatever the name is, planned to take a break but all I want to do is keep going. Not even in act 3 yet but yet played so much.

I may be a bit overlevelled(lmk if I am) I'm lvl 55 with jade being my lowest at 47 but I've never grinded once. I never stopped with the story to grind, I just love battling any monster I see as it's fun. As a die hard Pokémon fan, this game is much more fun to battle wild monsters.

First DQ game, thinking of playing the others for more hours of fun after beating this one of course.

How long did it take y'all to beat the game(minus post). I don't want it to end!

[DQXI Spoilers Act 2/3] I'm so conflicted...has anyone else done this?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 01:25 AM PDT

This is going to be a long post, so thanks ahead of time to anyone who reads all the way through.

DQXI is my first Dragon Quest game, I've fallen head over heels for it. I held out and waited for the Definitive Edition on Switch before playing because I knew it would have more content. I just finished Act 2 about two hours ago, and it's the most enjoyable 70 hours I've had with a game in a really, really, long time.

I'm in the post game now...and I just don't know if I can bring myself to make the choice to go back in time and undo Act 1's climax and the resulting second act. I love these characters too much to undo their immense growth that only happens as a result of the rise of The Lord of Shadow. Hendrick is my favorite character because of his arc and I can't stand the thought of taking that away from him in service of something that I don't even know if Veronica would want. It's the same with Serena, the thought of taking that growth away from her makes me seriously upset. The dead silence from the party when the news of what has to be done to bring Veronica back (if you press party talk) absolutely tears me to shreds. As does them trying to stop you from going through with it. I stopped on the final confirmation prompt, that was 2 hours ago, and now I'm still thinking about whether I want to go through with it. I cried during the Act 2 forging scene, and during the Act 2 credits, I just love this party. Not even just the party either, I feel as if the entire world of DQXI grows stronger as a result of being through so much torment in Act 2. I just don't feel right taking that, even if it is for a "better" end.

I've peeked a little at what results from going back and some of it upsets me further and other parts of it make me wonder if it's worth it. Calasmos is only released if you go back, he's unable to resurrect in the Act 2 timeline because of Mordegon destroying the lantern. I've read that the Act 3 timeline's party can FEEL that they've been through these events before but never truly remember as was told by the timekeeper. That destroys me that my friends are trapped in an existential limbo if I go through with this. I feel as if I would be killing them. Having the Act 3 timeline in a separate save file isn't enough for me.

Is it valid for me to feel like this? This is the most conflicted I've ever been over a decision given to me by a video game and I've been playing every genre of games for over 20 years. Has anyone else gotten to this point in the game and just couldn't bring themselves to go back because of how attached they are? I want to see the tens of hours of gameplay in Act 3 but not if that means sacrificing the characters I love and have built this strong bond with. Can I actually say I've finished the game?

Any feedback/discussion is appreciated, I just have no idea what to do at this point.

Went to a retro gaming convention this last weekend with one goal in mind

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:13 AM PDT

So what is new in the game now we've had a month to play it?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2019 03:55 AM PDT

I would like to know as much of a list as possible as to what is new.

One thing I am curious about in particular is this Madame Cherie or whatever thing I saw mentioned on one post. I've pretty much reached the end of the main gmae (not postgame) and not seen hide nor hair of this.

Anyone else in the forum own and appreciate the original 4 NES games?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 06:59 PM PDT

Yeah, I'm old school. I got Dragon Warrior 1 from the Nintendo Power giveaway. Bought Dragon Warrior II from a rental store. 3 and 4 came from eBay. I've played some of the remakes but there's just something about the originals that I still play after all these years. Wondering how many others like the original games over the remakes.

The second one is from the last Chapter of DQ1.

    Dq11 Tickington quest help

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 09:37 PM PDT

Hey, so I'm trying to complete the "a mother knows best" quest in dq8 but I'm having an issue. I got the books from trodain castle, erdricks future home, and the mansion and made the girl read all them. Obviously none of them were correct and I knew the last one was in the questers rest. However, whenever I go to the bookshelf, it says there is nothing of interest. I checked to see if it was a bug by restarting my game but the problem persisted. Any help would be appreciated.

Thoughts on Dragon Quest XI Ending

    Posted: 26 Oct 2019 11:26 PM PDT

I recently completed DQ XI and I found myself really disappointed with the ending. I wanted to state my issues and see what other people thought about these things. If you agree and have additional thoughts or disagree and have something constructive to add I would really like to hear it.

My concerns with the ending in order from severe to minor annoyance:

    1. The ending gives us nothing about the future of the characters we just put roughly 80 - 100 hours into. I found myself wanting less of Erdwin & Serenica, previous dragon quest games, and the DQ III reference and more about the current luminary and his companions. I would have liked some brief scenes showing what became of them.
    2. Serenica time split. When the hero breaks the time orb to undo the past it is assumed there is only one timeline and that he is rewriting the past. However, at the end when Serenica breaks the time orb she just disappears into another time line. This implies that the original time line the hero left still exists in parallel. So going back in time actually didn't resolve anything for that time line. In that time line everyone still died and they luminary has essentially abandoned his friends and family. I find this thought quite sad and let out a sigh when this scene played.
    3. Serenica time split 2. Having multiple parallel time lines is unnecessarily complex. I feel like the multiple timelines version of time travel is only necessary because of Serenica breaking the time orb at the end. If time travel truly rewrote history, rather than creating a new parallel timeline as the game implies, then allowing her to go back would potentially eliminate the need for the current luminary to exist or at the very least embark on a quest to defeat Calasmos. It would have been better, for example, if after the luminary returned Serenica to her original form she passed on and we had a scene where her and Erdwin can be together in the after life. I'm thinking something similar to Irwin and Eleanor, the luminaries parents.
    4. Serenica time split 3. It was confusing to me how the luminary could transfer his "luminary" powers to Serenica. Additionally, after he did so both he and her were able to retain the power of the luminary simultaneously. This is shown in the scene where Serenica and Erdwin meet in the past and both have the mark of luminary.

I would really like to have a discussion with others who have completed the game about these or other issues/thoughts about the end of the game. In my timezone it's close to midnight as I post this so I may not respond immediately. I just completed the game earlier in the night and felt like I had to get this off my chest. Cheers.
