Have Been Playing Dragon Quest III for the First time - Almost Done + Thoughts

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 09:35 AM PDT

I've always enjoyed reading "first time through" posts for games/series I'm particularly fond of, so I thought I'd through this out there.

RPGs and I tend not to mix. But, based on a flight of nostalgia for Dragon Quest III, which I'd played a bit as a kid on GBC but never finished, I decided to download the recently released Switch version. I'm playing the Japanese version going blind (I remember so little from however far I got as a kid, which wasn't very, that this is essentially all new to me), and am currently one artifact away from (I believe) being able to enter Zoma's castle. At the very least, I've explored all of Alefgard.

    Anyway, thoughts and highlights:

    • I absolutely love it. Although I've tended to not get super into RPGs, I don't know ... this just hits the right buttons. I love the party customization choices, I love the bizarre bits of humor and the way the game opens up once you have the ship ... and it's a ton of fun to be running into fights half-cocked and struggle through (though unfortunately that seems to be over for me). I've already started a second file just to have a weaker/sillier team up and running, and am absolutely moving onto Dragon Quest 1 and 2 after this. And then probably onto 11 if I'm not burned out.

    • (Journey so far) - I started out with my hero, two fighters, and a mage. I eventually turned my male fighter into a priest for a bit before changing him back with a few healing spells. I turned my mage into a sage, and my female fighter, much later, into a warrior once I thought her speed was high enough to make the switch worth it.

    • I tackled Orochi at levels 18-19 and scraped by both battles with herbs, my Hero's meager healing abilities (it was all I had at that point; hadn't switched any classes yet), and tenacity (and a lot of defense buffs). In the second fight, only my male fighter survived, and he was literally a single hit from any attack away from dying. I was determined not to grind, and this was a highlight. Unfortunately, since I stumbled into the hardest boss of the wide-open orb quest early on, it was also sort of all down-hill from there in terms of strategy/difficulty, but remained fun.

    • Baramos was the first wall that actually caused me to grind, going up a few levels from 28-ish to 30 and 31 (except for my Hero, who was 35 or so). Both my Hero and Mage learning ベホマ/HealAll absolutely trivialized the fight, as my Warrior and Fighter were able to keep wailing on him while my Hero and Sage were on healing and buff duty (with some flexibility for my Fighter to pop in a second quick heal and have my Hero attack instead). I wish I'd known in advance that マホトーン/StopSpell worked on him though, because I probably would have stuck it out without grinding (and having to do so felt like a defeat). I suppose that's a minor issue; I should have experimented, knowing that I could debuff his defenses, but since I know from Orochi that bosses could have some spell immunities, I just figured there was no way.

    • I'm currently in the low 40s just from bumbling my way around Alefgard exploring, and am assuming Zoma will be pretty trivial. I can't imagine too much giving my team trouble at this point.

    • I had to consult online hints (only trying to catch as little as possible) three times: Once for the Red Orb, once for where to use the Dry Pot, and once just a minute ago for the Sun Stone. By and large, I think the game does an incredible job of pointing you in the right direction through NPC dialogue or placing things along paths you'll naturally want to explore, but these three really do seem too light on directions. The Red Orb is just absurd (though it is a bit on me for not exploring further up outside the Pirates' Lair ... that feels like a total last-minute cop-out of a location at any rate though). You do get the Echo Flute, but that item is also terribly designed. Based on its description, which is along the lines of "Use it when you think an Orb may be near, and it will return an echo," I didn't realize it was meant to be a locator, and assumed it was a key item for a later Orb quest. Even had I realized, the fact that it isn't passive, but requires active testing in each area is ... not terribly useful. Any single line of dialogue hinting at the location of this Orb would have been appreciated. The Dry Pot/Magic Key Location is a bit on me, as it was in the one square of ocean on the map I hadn't explored yet, but the hint you get from the horse is extremely vague (ocean to the West), and other dialogue refers to its use to raise a shrine by some "shallows," but the word it uses could likewise be interpreted as "shore," so ... I had no idea where the hell I was going for this one, and was just testing it along coasts for a little while. Finally, the Sun Stone location (all I know now is its basic area) is absolutely stupid, given the hints you have. There's just as much to tell you it's not in the place it is, since the other treasures there have been skirted off. I just assumed Kandata's information was outdated. A man in the basement also tells you it isn't there--I thought it had been moved to some little dungeon I hadn't found like the others, but was also stumped since I'd searched the whole map and gone back over NPC dialogue multiple times. I can safely say it would have taken me ages to find this without getting an outside hint, if I ever would have. I still have no idea where I haven't looked in the spot where it supposedly is. (I also have no idea where the Golden Lyre is, or if I need it, but I'm also clueless there, after several trips back through NPC dialogue. I have the King's Sword, Armor of Light, and Hero's Shield though.)

    • There are a few other small blemishes, like the way the personality system (while fun!) suffers from some clearly outclassing others--or being impacted by starting seed distribution in counterintuitive ways (i.e. I give a new Fighter five Strength seeds and they may end up with a personality that cuts into their Speed). In general, I wish the stat-growth impact of these were slightly lessened, that their pros and cons were more balanced, and that they offered some other secondary effects/item interactions instead, though that's asking a lot given the time of the remake's release. At any rate, as they stand, they kind of both hurt and help the game both purely mechanically and as a role-playing experience if you want to get into it that way (and to Dragon Quest III's credit, it melted even a mechanical-gaming-oriented heat like mine into wanting to get into it a bit that way). The lopsided difficulty of the second half of the game might also be a small sticking point--I don't see anything being able to stack up to the Orochi fight now, and as soon as I felt like I had a reasonable shot at Baramos--being unaware of StopSpell strategies--I faced the opposite problem of being ridiculously safe.

But I still love it. My second file has me starting out with a Merchant, a Thief, and a Clown, which should be a ride, even though I'm planning to swap all three later. The replay value is absurdly high here, both for the way you can play with team composition and variable difficulty options, and just for what a delight the main quest is on its own (the mandatory Merchant/town side story--holy hell).

That's it, I suppose! Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on Dragon Quest III, or recommend places to go with the series next--though I'm fairly commmitted to finishing the Famicom trilogy and then moving onto 11. I think. Let me know! The entire breadth of DS releases is also open.

(As a last, small note, I pretty strongly dislike everything I've seen about the most recent localization of the game/the original trilogy. So, so many changes for changes' sake, often in ways that silly-up elements of the game that are played straight in Japanese. (The game is already plenty silly, and doesn't really need its more standard/sincere elements swapped over to double down on it.) It also rendered reading about the game in English nearly incomprehensible to me until I figured out what had been switched to what. The Gameboy Color translation seems like it was a nice middle ground between successful English-audience-facing changes and fidelity, so I'm not sure why they took it things so much further here.)

    Seed of Sorcery Farming?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 10:02 AM PDT

    Hey there,

    small question about DQ11.

Basically title. Is there a way to farm seeds of sorcery? I hear it's easily doable in post-game, but I'm wondering if its possible long before that (I'm still in chapter 1). Currently trying to turn my Luminary into a full-on spellcaster.

Also, as spoiler free as possible, when does the Luminary skilltree expand?

Thanks a bunch to anyone taking time out of their day to answer my stupid questions! :)

Completed DQXI-S for the first time.

    Posted: 09 Oct 2019 07:54 PM PDT

Heya folks, I've just recently beat DQXI a few hours ago and this is kinda my first Dragon Quest game, I was familiar with the series long ago and I didn't get much into it until all those old rumors of Hero of being in smash bros.

Since then I express interest to the series and for a while now, I see why people love this series a lot, every moment with the game was extremely fun and also the characters!.

I still have the 2D mode stuff I have to do and also some of the extra content S was given. Without saying much the ending, I already have DQ3 on the back burner so I'll get to that eventually.

I'm just a novice to this series so I'm hoping later down the line I could be big fans as much most of y'all on this sub-reddit.

This game was a experience and I loved every minute of it.

Question about the time lapse (SPOILERS for end of Act 1/start of Act 2)

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 07:55 AM PDT

So I finished act 1 and I just barely started Sylvando's little side story thing, and I'm wondering how much time elapsed between the end of act 1 and start of act 2? It seems like it's been a couple months, long enough for fishermen to lose their livelihoods and turn to a life of crime (at least I wouldn't think you'd make such a choice in a single day).

Also, some unnamed source tells Mordegon that his people searched all corners of the earth and couldn't find the luminary, so a lot of time must have passed no?

DQXI Postgame Spoilers - Cave in Tickington?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 01:56 AM PDT

At this point I believe I've done everything there is to do in this game more or less. I've beaten the true final boss, completed all of the books in Tickington, and defeated the resulting superboss. Despite all that there is still a red tockle blocking access to a cave in Tickington. Is there any way for me to enter this area or is it permanently blocked?

I wanna buy DQ11 but I cant decide on which system!!

    Posted: 10 Oct 2019 05:43 AM PDT

I cant decide if I should the game for the switch or the pc.

While I understand that the switch version is superior in terms of content. To be really honest I dont really care for 2d mode or Japanese voices.

The biggest plus on the switch for me is the portability and the biggest minus are the graphics.

This games looks so pretty so I wanna play it on max graphics settings and just enjoy the world and I have a decent PC so I know I can run DQ11 on basically max settings.

So my question is:- are the pc graphics superior enough(max settings) that I should sacrifice portability (I really dont care for the other features).

I was totally going to get it on PC but I just see so many people suggesting the switch version that I cant just ignore it.

Please give me your opinions and help me decide.

Prime example of first world problems btw.
