Three new Dragon Quest games announced.

I’m one of many people who fell in love with the whole dragon quest series after playing dragon quest 11. I grew up playing final fantasy 7 and 10 and it was always my favorite series but now... I just really love this series is what I’m saying

Finished my first Dragon Quest and COR BLIMEY it was amazing!!

I'm happy to say I finished my first Dragon Quest game with DQ8 and what a lovely journey it was. The characters were really great and I adored all their accents. The other main JRPG series I've played mostly include FF and Persona, and it was so fun to finally dive into my first DQ. DQ definitely has a certain charm about it that makes it unique and the Toriyama designs are so lovely! The soundtrack is so fantastical and dreamlike. Only wish I could have heard the orchestral version as I played on the 3DS, but oh well now I can listen to the orchestral version OST and enjoy it :)

Moving on to DQ11 next since I already own it, and been playing some DQ Builders 2 on the side :P

Also bonus that now I can finally and easily remember what all of Hero's moves do in Smash hehe!

I tried so hard to dislike Sylvando...

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 07:26 AM PDT

He is just so frivolous, and silly, and... fruity? I don't like clowns, don't like circuses, don't like dancing (ye, im a miserable fucker), his voice is annoying, his pet names are irritating, and Sylvando is exactly the kind of person who instantly irks the piss out of me. and indeed, that was exactly how it was when i first got him. couldnt stand the guy, and i still never use him if i can avoid it tbh... but as a character, he has truly grown on me. and i am really not sure why. ye, he means well, ye he is strong and courageous, but his backstory boils down to following a whim (and whimsy is another thing i dislike), and he never really does anything that significant in the story, besides being supportive.

but i'll be damned if he hasnt become my favorite character. he is just... adorable. and i still have no idea WHY i have come to like him so much. he's like a puppy you REALLY didnt want your GF to get, that eventually you fight to keep after the divorce XD

edit - oh yeah, and his costumes are fucking ridiculous

Quick question: in DQXIS does the "married" partner of choice affects the true ending in any way?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 03:56 AM PDT

I remember that in the PS4 realese if you married Gemma, in the brief sequence after Calasmos's final fight, she would playfully tease a new addition to the family, but is Sandy the dog whos pregnant not her; Derk has received a letter from Erik who had gone treasure hunting with Mia; then Veronica and Serena shows up to take the (Super) Sword of Light back to Yggdrasil. Question: does the changing of the "chosen" partner affect that post battle sequence? Like if you chose Erik, is he still in Cobblestone? If you chose one of the sisters will they have diffent dialogue? What about the gag with Sandy? If you chose one of the four party members not mentioned above, do they make an appearence? I would like to know.

Ps. On a related note, I never found out (or I don't remember) if in that brief sequence there is a mention of where Sylvando, Rab, Jade or Hendrik are now and what are they doing. I guess they did get personal endings at the end of act 2 ( and let's face it, Jade and Hendrik's fate is kinda obvious) and so it would be a little redundant, but still it would be nice if something similiar, even in redux form, is alluded in the act 3 ending, after all those act 2 cutscenes are so optional that in my first playthrouth I accidentaly missed all of them, leaving no real closure for them.

Is it a good idea to build the hero as a sage or should I work towards gladiator? (DQ6)

Newcomer -- If I could only play one...

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 02:20 PM PDT

I've been doing some research and have found a lot of great advice for the best place to start with Dragon Quest. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll have the time to go further than my starting point -- at least for now. I was hoping this sub could lend me some advice on which Dragon Quest game I should play if I'm only able to play one for the foreseeable future. Not necessarily the best, not necessarily the one newcomers should play, just the game you'd recommend to someone who will likely only be able to play one of them.

Culture and Dialect in Dragon Quest English Voicing

    Posted: 16 Jun 2020 10:15 PM PDT

I'll start by saying I am not well versed in DQ. I rented the original NES game as a child and then fell in love with the first Final Fantasy and have mostly been reintroduced to DQ via the recent side-games (Builders 1 &2, Itadaki Street Dragon Quest vs Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Heroes).

One of the interesting things is the Eurocentric voice/accenting in the English voice work (I like it!).

I'm curious when Enix (or Square Enix) started to take this route (I am presuming there is little direction outside of names in the original Japanese) and the community's general thoughts on it. Is it liked overall? Disliked? Since the series began having voice work has it been consistently following this style or is it a newer trend in the series?
