Posted: 07 Jun 2020 07:01 AM PDT I DQ 11 am part way into Act 2 and I'm assuming I get Eric back into my party at some point For the majority of the game so far I have had Eric do nothing but steal from enemies. Is this beneficial? It can make some fights longer due to his chances (I have him equipped for it) and I never know if something good can be stolen (I think I stole seeds before from special enemies) [link] [comments]
[DQ IV] Question about seeds in each Chapter Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:41 AM PDT So I've started playing Dragon Quest IV on Android (only one I don't own the DS copy of as of now) and as with the first three games, I enjoy it a lot. Now I've completed the first two Chapters (Ragnar and Alena) and am at the beginning of 3 with Torneko. While playing, a question came up. While playing through the first two chapters, I found the stat boosting seeds (as you do in other DQ games). But the fact is, that the playable characters change with each chapter, completely new inventory each time. I imagine, that toward the end of the game, the different characters will join up. Now my question is: Do the seeds carry over or is it advisable to use them up as soon as I get them in each chapter? Because I don't think I used all of them with Ragnar, but to be sure I used them all in Chapter two on Alena, Kiryl and Borya. I just want to make sure that I don't waste them by not using them in each chapter. [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 06:27 AM PDT I just started playing DQ11 today on the Switch, and I can't figure out how to enter wells when they are boarded up with planks. When I switched to 2D mode I could enter the well though, no issues. Is it just not a part of the game in 3D mode or am I missing something? [link] [comments]
Posted: 07 Jun 2020 04:40 AM PDT I just got DQ3 for switch, wondering if I should play the others first? I've played 6, 8, 9 and 11 before. Thank you! [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Jun 2020 09:14 PM PDT Does DQX still require a VPN outside of Japan and America? I'm in New Zealand so unsure at this stage. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Lets get the obvious out the way. This film is awesome. The story does a great job for the super condensed run time. And the visuals are absolutely goddamn GORGOUS. The 3D visuals don't necessarily capture Toriyama's signature style (except the monster designs) and while its not revolutionary or anything. Thats ok. Because the characters and world are simply visually stunning in their own right. There is so much life and color that I couldn't stop smiling and drooling like a kid. Voice acting was surprisingly good. English lip syncing was off. But eh... whatcha gonna do...? Hearing the classical orchestral arrangements is just HNNNNGGGG. All in all, I was thoroughly impressed with the presentation of it all. It was a wonderful joyride.
I went into this film knowing about the ending from the controversial uproar from the Internet. It was already fully spoilt to me and I knew what to expect. However, even having all that knowledge. I was absolutely floored by that twist. With a reaction that can only be described as one of the most severe cases of emotional whiplash I have ever felt about any piece of media in a long time. I don't really know if the reaction is positive or negative. I think it leans more towards negative... maybe? Like I feel confused, betrayed? I dunno. A little over dramatic... yes. But I don't wanna shit on the film and call it "bad" , I mostly wanna dissect it and work through my complicated feelings of what I just saw and why I feel the way I do. And I didn't know where else to offload my thoughts. So.. yeah. Here we are.
When done right. Subversions can be a very powerful writing tool that can be used to illustrate certain ideas that challenge the audience's own proconceived notions. Its also a great way to keep people engaged by preventing certain tropes from falling into patterns and being too easily predictable. Let me say that I absolutely give hats off to the writers for even having the balls to tackle this for a franchise as traditionalist as DQ. Say what you will. But the writers and editors must have been sweating bullets when they wrote this film as I can only imagine the sheer magnitude of criticism they were prepared for from fans. Its always a good thing when creators are willing to veer off the beaten path. So clearly the plot twist was was deliberate subversion. Really when I sit down and digest it. My big problem with the plot twist isn't necessarily the plot twist itself. Its how it was handled. I'm going to try and explain this using a popular example that came to mind while I was watching.
I love the Lego Movie. The reason why the Lego Movie's big plot twist works is because its inherently integrated into the overarching themes and ideas that are presented throughout the narrative. Emmet is a clear vehicle for the audience. The average person who is nearly devoid of creativity and the movie explores his journey to becoming a Master Builder. The subversion/ meta narrative reveals to us that he is a concoction of Finn, the young boy's own imagination. And Lord Business is the jaded cynical rigid and rule enforcing adult, his father. Who is meant to be a vehicle for the corporate aspect of Lego as a multi billion dollar business. The movies own way of critiquing its own business model vs its consumers. This works in so many levels because it basically proves to us as viewers that our willingness to accept the ridiculous fiction of the Lego Movie itself, is as equally valid proof of the power of our inherent creativity and imagination of the characters within the film. It enforces and elevates the core message behind the Lego brand as a whole while still being critical of its potential problems. Imagination and creativity are key words here. It's not just a celebration of the lego. Its a celebration of you. The person who plays with them, and we're all Master Builders if we are willing to try.
After ruminating on it for a few hours. I kept coming back to my initial feeling of "betrayal" at that Your Story ending. And I think this reaction happened for 2 main reasons... 1. Your Story's ending indirectly betrays the intelligence of the Dragon Quest fansbase. Luca is meant to be us, and his experience is meant to mirror our love and investment of the games. The key thing here is we as DQ fans know they are games, we love the games for being really really good games. Mediums that we consume and experience and get immersed in. But the plot twist damages this message. Because the protagonist isn't invested in a game. He has completely and utterly lost all grasp of reality and genuinely believes the Dragon Quest world is his real life. And when Luca is shown that its all just a game in the end. He has a near psychological breakdown that would be almost catatonic to a normal person. Its such a shocking revelation that would be more tonally at place in a dramatic psychological action movie like The Matrix. Not DQ. The unintended implications of this are actually horrifying. Because what if Nimzo never showed up and told the protag that its all a game? Would he even have woken up? Does Square Enix intend to make this a reality? Its basically the Roy: A Life Well Lived joke from Rick & Morty stretched out as a feature length film with very little self-awareness or irony. It simply. does. not. work. 2. It Undermines Its Own Narrative Themes and Ideas Basically the entire first 1hour presents all these incredible adventures, and beautiful moments of character relationships and companions. it takes to be a hero. The coming of age journey of going from a boy becoming a man and taking ownership of your destiny. DQ has always been a metaphor for growing up. Sure the film had lightning fast pacing that blasted through all of these arcs with barely a moment to breathe. But it captured all these classic tropes with an earnest and genuine spirit. I actually genuinely teared up when Luca married Bianca and seeing Alus born and grow up. It was such a beautiful portrayal of their relationship. The plot twist contributes absolutely nothing to any of this. If anything it undercuts all the relationships Luca has built up as it frames them under the lens of being a video game. An entirely fictional experience. Luca proudly declares "It's REAL TO ME!" in the final climax. A moment thats meant to cap off a triumphant display of his personal growth. That he values his experiences with the games. Reflecting on his childhood. But this is undercut by the fact that up to that moment. Everything was objectively REAL to him. It would have been real to anybody in his position. He didn't grow or become a better person than who he was when he entered the VR. He just played a video game and got really into it to the point that it was his real actual life. And its actually terrifying to be honest.
I absolutely adored this film. The first hour or so are just pure magical DQ bliss. However, the ending is a strange decision. It almost feels like its implying that Luca wishes it was real and would have gladly given up his life in the real world if he could stay there forever because of how real it is to him. For a film, literally named "YOUR STORY". It feels like its less of a celebration of the millions of DQ players that enjoy these games. And more of a celebration of Square Enix's technology division for making a game so convincingly real that you lose grasp on reality. [link] [comments]

Just finished DQ5 and then watched the movie - and a bit of my DQ story so far Posted: 06 Jun 2020 10:57 AM PDT Just... wow! What a game. I really loved the story, the ability to collect monsters and the general pace of the game. I am playing through every game, and I had to have a bit of a break in the middle of 5, but other than that, it has been a pleasure. I started out with DQ7 when it was released on the 3DS and immediately fell in love with the series. As a lifelong fan of Chrono Trigger and Golden Sun, this game hit home on first try. Playing through the series and reading on this forum has given me a greater understanding of what makes these games so great. I can see why people hold this series so near and dear, and I love playing through the games and understanding more and more of why so many people feels so strongly about this series. The movie was therefore great for me right now. The plot was great and familiar. I loved seeing all the monsters animated and I felt that even though they skipped a lot, the movie covered the most important parts. Warning! Spoilers ahead. The ending really got to me. Although I am late to the party, I have come to love this series. I identify with the protagonist as he remembers playing as a kid, always choosing Bianca and I know that if this VR-thing ever happened, I would be on the first plane to Japan (once we're done with all this Covid-19 stuff). I can see why many didn't like the movie, but for me it described that childlike joy of having Dragon Quest as part of your life perfectly. This is my history of DQ: What is your story? Did you like the movie? [link] [comments]
So I’ve finally played the Loto Trilogy.... Spoilers at the end Posted: 06 Jun 2020 03:50 PM PDT yes...I said Loto which means that I played the GBC versions of Dragon Quest 1 through 3. I have to say that it was quite an experience. I was introduced through this franchise because of DQ 11 and went to back to the first 3 games to see how much was referenced...and boy I did not realize how much DQ 11 took from those games. It's really amazing. It was nice to see how the games evolved over time but sadly for DQ 1-2...I feel that those games were just the beta for the true Dragon Quest game. Dragon Quest 1 is roughly ten hours but the majority of that game is grinding hell and even playing on an emulator it is still aggravating, especially when I'm listening to the main battle theme in that game. It's so bad that it feels like a chalk being scratched on a chalk board. Dragon Quest 2's main issue for me was the lack of direction. There were many points in the game where I was stuck and had to resort to using Google to figure where I was going. Of course the imbalance grinding issue was another factor but not as bad as the former issue I mentioned. The soundtrack in the game is a huge step up however, with castle theme being my personal favorite. Dragon Quest 3 is the best GBC game of all time. I had a blast playing that game. I loved creating my party and building them into a powerful squad. The freedom of that aspect allowed me to create backstories for each of my party members. I started out with a female merchant, a female cleric, and a male thief and re classed them as a female warrior, female sage, and male fighter respectively. The npcs were starting to not feel as robotic and have some variety of immersion to them. I also rarely had to look up what I had to until very late game. Definitely the best of the Loto Trilogy and my second favorite as of DQ right now. The soundtrack in the game is quality as usual with the main battle theme being my favorite of the series. The GBC sound chip is underrated as hell. To be honest. I probably won't ever replay the first 2 games, but I'll definitely replay DQ3 I'm the future. I'm targeting the Zenithia Trilogy next but Ima gonna play it in chronological order this time so that means I'm starting with DQ 6 next! On a side note SPOILERS When you beat DQ 11 Yygdragon tells you that the Sword of Light will be wielded by other Heroes and it cuts to The Hero of Alefgard(DQ1) wielding it, but when you play DQ 3 the Sword Loto has was forged into the Sword of Kings and it becomes his sword along with the descendants. So my guess is that this retcon means that the heroes of DQ 1 and 2 wielded the Sword of Light from the Luminary since he also holds the title of Loto, while the Sword of Kings is wielded by Erdrick/Loto and only him. What do you think about that? [link] [comments]
Quick impressions of DQ5 & 6 and What should I play next? Posted: 06 Jun 2020 04:54 PM PDT Over the past year or so, I've been working my way through the series starting with 1 - I believe you can see my impressions of past games in my post history. Having just finished 6, I'd like to share my impressions of 5 and 6. I've been playing on an tablet. DQ5: I enjoyed it and see why it's held in such high regard. While playing it, I was a bit worn out on the series, however, and didn't really play it straight through like I did the others. Over time, my opinion of the game has grown, and I certainly do intend to replay it (when it is hopefully released on Switch). I think the biggest thing for me was that as someone who is used to Final Fantasy, particularly modern FF, the story felt a little underwhelming. And really, it makes sense - after all, the game originally released in 1992! - but thinking it was the first non-NES game, I guess I was expecting more of a leap forward. Of course, it was still a very good game overall. I've found myself liking the music from this one more and more. DQ6: Just beat this one less than an hour ago, and I can see why it's generally considered one of the weaker entries. It wasn't bad, but the unique elements of the game didn't particularly stand out to me, and the characters largely felt flat. Still, it's a solid JRPG, and I can't say I didn't like it. Not as noteworthy as some of the others, but still very good. I've purchased copies of 7 and 8 on 3DS, 9 for DS, and 11 for Switch. I am thinking of playing either 8 or 11 next, since they both seem more modern than 7, and I don't think I'll make it through a lengthy game with a class system like DQ6 at this time. I'm actually leaning toward 11 since I'd really like to see where the series is at currently. Does anyone have any thoughts? [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Jun 2020 04:15 PM PDT In Dragon Quest 11 I have just gotten past the part where the party is broken up. I got to the top of the Monk moutain and decided to put that on hold & go exploring. I ended up finding Sylvando and his parade etc. Should I be sticking with the main mission and follow order, like am I messing up the intended flow of the game? And a second question. I was wondering around to get my fast travel (Zoom) filled up again, do I really have to revisit every location, or do they give them back to me at some point? [link] [comments] |
