Dragon Quest fans are so chill.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 12:44 PM PST

Can I just take a moment to say that of all the gaming communities out there, Dragon Quest fans seem the most chill. I don't know why. Maybe because it's so niche outside Japan, we're happy to get anything here. Maybe because there's not been any massive shift in gameplay or tone over the years but after spending time in Smash Bros. And Sonic fan groups where it's constant bitching, it's nice to come here where everyone is chill and happy.

What is your greatest DQ-dev wish - like, what game for what console do you most wish they’d make right now?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:29 AM PST

For me, it's Monsters on Switch.

It can be remakes, it can be a new one, I just want to breed slimes and pretty dragons again, and ideally on a bigger screen. sigh

Little tip regarding the second casino [SPOILERS]

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:34 AM PST

It's known that any tokens you acquire in the monster casion vanish once you defeat Booga, but you'll also gain back any tokens you spent. So if you went in there with 1.5 million tokens like I did, you can go wild buying love potions to use in crafting later, and you'll still have plenty of tokens by the end.

What are people's opinions of Blue Dragon?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 01:09 AM PST

The more I look back at this game, the more it it becomes DQ on the 360 in my mind.

I've only ever seen reviews of the game from people who don't seem to know anything about dragon quest, so I was wondering what other DQ fan's opinions would be on this game.

Favorite of the original 6 mainline titles?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:42 AM PST

Hey, so I'm new to the franchise and while I cant afford the 11 definitive edition right now, I fell in love with the demo. Honestly I've never played a game that captures the spirit of adventure so perfectly. However I do have access to the older titles, so which one was your favorite.

[DQM Joker 2 Pro] English Patch?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:43 AM PST

I was wondering where I could find the English patch for Joker 2 Pro. I remember having it downloaded at one point but it seems to have gone. After playing a lot of Tact I feel like going back and playing the main DQM games (already played Joker 1/2 but I wanna play with DQ9 monsters and we sadly never got anything after those...)

    Game is stuck

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 06:56 PM PST

On Xbox one, I get to the top of cobblestone tor at the beginning, it gets through all of the cutscenes and then when I get to the cave to get to the bottom of cobblestone tor, the game just goes black as if it is going to get to the bottom for 10 minutes then freezes.

I beat the big bad and it feels GOOD

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 11:59 AM PST

WOOOOOO I spent my entire morning beating the Fortress of Fear and took down Mordegon in one shot. I know that's only Act 2 and I still have the last chunk of the adventure but goddamn does it feel good. I am so so so far behind with work (like, my actual job, where I earn money that feeds my DQ addiction) but I don't even care, I'm riding this high for all it's worth. Spreadsheets can wait when the sake of all Erdrea is at stake. YAHOOOOOOO

How likely do you think that it is that we will finally see some information and confirmation of a Dragon Quest 9 remake.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:49 PM PST

So they mentioned the idea of remaking the games over a year ago now I believe, we've passed its 10 year anniversary. The latest dragon quest is already out and over with. How soon do you guys think we will get information, if we do get any at all? Just curious on everyone's thoughts! And also, what would you be looking forward to the most about Dragon Quest 9 being on the switch!

    Poker Double-Down Odds Testing

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 09:44 PM PST

    Poker Double-Down Odds Testing

So, I've seen a few different theories about the odds on poker in DQ11, specifically during the double-down sequences, being skewed towards the player or specific card choices made at specific times being better than others. Just for fun (and out of boredom) I decided to test this out and made a spreadsheet with the value of my initial card and the value of card I flipped (for this test I always flipped the first card) for 149 rounds of double-down. I wasn't able to validate any specific card choice theories that I've encountered (eg. one that said you should always choose card 2 if you draw a 10 on the first double-down), but it's pretty clear from the charts that the odds are pretty skewed in the player's favor. The card you draw initially appears to come from a roughly normal distribution, whereas the card you flip over comes from a heavily skewed distribution.

Note that this chart is a bit misleading because I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed to draw a joker as your card to beat, and I don't recall ever drawing a chest as my card either. Given that, the way I presented the data is potentially misleading, but even bearing that in mind, the difference is pretty dramatic. If it's true that you can never draw (only flip) the joker, then there should always be a bias in favor of the player (since there are always more high-value cards in the deck you flip from versus the deck you draw from), but it would be more subtle that what's shown here. Note that drawing cards from a standard deck would not produce a normal distribution anyhow, it would appear more uniform, so neither the drawn card nor the flipped card are coming from distributions that are 'realistic'. The developers have done us a lot of favors here :)

    For reference:

    0 = chest card

11-14 = Jack, Queen, King, Ace

    15 = Joker

If I get bored again I'm curious to see if this distribution would be substantially different if I flipped over the second card every time. I have a feeling that it wouldn't be, but if it were that may support the idea that certain card choices are better than others on particular steps in the double-or-nothing sequence. Honestly, I doubt the developers put that much work into rigging the game in our favor, but it's fun to imagine :)

Got the full game coming in a few days, do I have to finish the demo to transer the save or can I pick directly up with the full game?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:53 PM PST

I don't think I was clear with the title, I'm basically asking if I can pick up in the full game from where ever I am at in the demo, or if I have to finish the demo in order to transfer my save? Trying to figure out if I should just wait or go ahead and start with the demo.

Is Sylvando holding back in the race?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 10:43 AM PST

I have suspected it before, but this latest playthrough basically confirmed it. I did worse than usual, bumped a few walls and messed up a few turns, all after yesterday where I beat the champion time of the hard bronze cup. Weird how much skill changes day to day. Point is... I think he's letting you win. I noticed that every time I messed up or fell behind, he'd slow down until I passed him, then he'd suddenly speed up to stay with my overall speed. Mess up again, he suddenly slows again. Thinking about it, it even fits. He's an entertainer, and not one for personal glory. Even in battle, his main thing is support and helping EVERYONE ELSE kick more ass than they would without him. He likely thinks the prince having a close race where he barely wins would make for the most fun and exciting outcome, so he purposefully keeps up with you but makes sure to let you win unless you're doing so badly that you're begging to lose. I could be imagining it, so as anyone else noticed this behavior? After 3 playthroughs now, with him seemingly slowing down every time I fall behind, I'm now pretty sure he does this. But maybe I'm wrong.

If I'm right... How good is he at racing REALLY? If he was good enough to impress the whole city while holding back his real skill and speed, how good is he when serious? Gold Reins fast by default?
