Massive jump in difficulty in DQ8?

    Posted: 12 May 2021 08:14 AM PDT

I'll mark as spoilers just in case

So I managed to get myself the boat and now have the ability to travel around the globe, but MY GOD monsters are insanely powerful now! Most of the time they wer pretty easy to deal with, but now every battle does around 50% of my parties HP. My characters are...

    Eight: 26

    Yangus: 25

    Jessica: 24

    Angelo: 23

Am I underleveled? Is my equipment bad? Should I be going somewhere specific? And also, what's the best place to go grinding :b

    Areas that contain spells?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 10:11 PM PDT

I just started thinking about this after replying to a post about what monsters we dislike and why. I had said the Hydras in the Cave Northwest of Tantegel from DQIII.

In DQIII both basement levels of the Pyramid and the Cave Northwest of Tantegel contain your spells. Are there any other areas from the other games that have environments that contain spells?

I can't think of any off the top of my head. While they can be annoying areas at times I do like them. I think it adds a little extra strategy be it for a short amount of time.

Why Are Some Games So Difficult To Love? :( (Kind of Related to Dragon Quest VI)

    Posted: 12 May 2021 02:59 AM PDT

I've been trying to play Dragon Quest VI on DS and I love the series but playing it has been so boring I had to turn the thing off. Slight spoilers (!)...
You start the game and the first 5-10 minutes are pretty good. I'm enjoying the music and visuals are... fine. Dialogue is really fluffy in a bad way and I don't remember being annoyed by that in Dragon Quest VIII or XI. But in any case, I start battling... and for the first few hours all you can do is press "Attack" and heal. There are no skills available, you don't earn them quickly enough and all you do is hit "Attack" or "Heal", or Run Away (if enemies are too strong).
I get it, DQ VI is a 26 year old game and DS one is 10 year old.. but how do people suggest this to someone? It's incredibly boring to play nowadays.

My message isn't really about Dragon Quest VI, it's mainly about the issues I'm having with some older titles. I feel like trying to get into these old games took away a lot of the magic of these franchises for me. I hear the fantastic music and see appealing visuals but actually playing these things in their original (I don't want to do mods or hacks) form is very.. it makes these things feel like a scam.

On a more positive note, I started playing FF Tactics A2 on DS and the game brought back some of the joy. The atmosphere, music, visuals are beautiful and gameplay isn't too bad. You have some skills right away, dialogue doesn't take too long and combat is satisfying enough. It's not a revelation but is more enjoyable.
Playing Tactics A2 makes me want to go back and not loose these old games and their worlds but then I remember how clunky and rough a lot of them are and it's just.. I loose any admiration.

    Thoughts?

I hate it that there is no Hero class in DQ9.

    Posted: 11 May 2021 02:45 PM PDT

In DQ3, the Hero "class" was exclusive to the hero. In DQ6&7 anyone could be a hero but you had to go through a specific sequence of jobs and you had to grind, though the main character was always able to become a hero with much less effort. Even in the games without a job system there was always a hero with that same "DQ Hero" class archetype.

There was nothing stopping them from just making the hero job a late or endgame thing that the main character acquires through some story event. I would have liked it if you could've gotten your wings and immortality back, too.

    Beat Dragon Quest 2 (nes)

    Posted: 11 May 2021 04:08 PM PDT

Hoo boy this was an achievement. I picked up dragon quest 11 back when it launched on switch, loved it, and decided to go back to experience the start of the series.

DQ1 was a mixed bag with some good exploration but the grinding dragged the game down and the 1 on 1 combat was a tad to simplistic. all in all a decent experience but not one I have any desire to repeat any time soon.

I jumped straight into DQ2 and liked it a lot better. The party system improved the battle remarkably and it was going smoothly until I got the boat and completely lost any sense of direction, got overwhelmed, and eventually left the save to rot in the backlog.

But, I returned to save the realm from Hargon many months later with a fresh save file and new determination. If you take the effort to learn the map, the boat is way more manageable, and the npc hints are extremely good for guiding you around. I was surprised by how easy cave to Rhone was with the pitfalls being the big holdup(I did the game fully blind with no external maps). But Rhone itself nearly did me in. The amount of runs failed to DEFEAT was maddening and HEALALL didn't help either. After 2 and a half hours of charging Hargon's castle over and over I finally brought down Malroth and restored peace to the lands! The high from seeing the credits roll is unmatched from any other NES game I've ever played. IF it weren't for the Rhone difficulty spike this would be my recommendation for single best NES game.

With this one behind me, its on to DQ3! wish me luck.

    Seed Usage

    Posted: 11 May 2021 04:11 PM PDT

When following a guide one of the DQ games (I believe it was DQ4), it was recommended to not use Seeds on your characters depending on some mathematical equation to maximize stat growth. Like if you used a Seed of Stength when you were already at the strength cap for your character's level, you'd gain the points, but on the next level up, you'd get either zero or less stat growth than you would've if you didn't use the seed at all.

This led me to basically not use any of the seeds until the end of the game.

Are all the DQ games like this? Am I overthinking this? Is there a good strategy for seed use?

Currently playing through DQ11 (when home) and DQ3 (when away from home), and wondering if I'm deliberately handicapping myself by not using seeds, or if I'm only missing out on short/temporary stat gains.

    DQB2 question about monster allies.

    Posted: 11 May 2021 02:36 PM PDT

is there a comprehensive list of "best in slot" monsters? i know hammerhood is outshined by Golems and the metal slime hunters(killing machine family) make awesome farmers.

    what about the rest?
