Now that we know Dragon Quest XII runs in Unreal Engine 5, here are my "Totally not insane and unrealistic" expectations of what it'll look like.

If there is one thing I love about DQ11 it's the characters

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:46 AM PDT

The characters, I love feeling the hero as an extention of myself into another mystical world, which is why I love rpgs, and all the supporting cast, most rpgs have characters hit hard when they come in but die down as the game goes on and get out of the spotlight. For instance, in FF7, you get Vincent and Yuffie as optional characters so they're a bit excusable, but barret for example has about 2 moments of story or relating to the other characters at all after you leave Midgar. The Prison under the golden saucer being the main one, which I'll admit is good but after that scene he doesn't do much else for development of other characters or relate to the party much, the same can be said of Amarant in FF9, has 1 scene, after that he's just the brooding guy who discovers "What? Friendship good?" . And in Chrono cross, all the characters have interchangeable dialog. I think you're seeing my point, I appreciate games like Dragon quest, and persona, and most of the Final Fantasy games because they're characters get development and actually matter throughout the whole game. Which ff7 and 9 do well, don't get me wrong, but in persona 5, and Dragon quest 11, etc. I can change to a diffrent character at any time and feel like I'm just as strong as before. My main theory for why this works is that with a big cast, they all get exp, and they all feel unique, Hendrick plays nothing like jade, plays nothing like Eric, plays nothing like sernea. Some have more in common then others, for example rab has some of serenas spells, and Eric and Hendrick have some of the same abilities, but they still have their own stuff and strategies to having them in the party and so ig my point is, story wise and gameplay wise, they all feel like dynamic characters and they all feel useful in their own way. Even Serena and Sylvando which I wouldn't have expected at first glance.

Unpopular Opinion: I don't mind Dragon Quest mixing up the formula as long it remains turn based.

    Posted: 29 May 2021 04:35 PM PDT

I'm honestly fine with a dragon quest game with a diferent tone than the other and with renovated/diferent mechanics, i think it could end up pretty interesting (of course, as long they don't go the ARPG route, i like ARPGs, but DQ i want it to stay with turn based battles).
Plus if the fanbase doesn't end up liking XII and it's changes, they next game will 100% go back to the traditional formula.

Well...I guess after all these years, I'm going to try Dragon Quest X.

After having my heart broken during the celebration stream for the last time, I thought..

    With this:

    https://youtu.be/BA0qoAE7ciM

    And this released:

    https://youtu.be/cmZhUMF-Jb0

Don't know a lick of Japanese but I guess now might be the time for me to finally try this? I don't have any hope of DQX: Offline releasing over here so I figure I might aswell try.

Only MMO I ever loved was FFXIV and good lord do I love that game. Its my favorite Final Fantasy. Hopefully this can be the second.

Can the whole game be completed with just AI party members? Imagine its going to be rough trying to communicate with japanese players and I prefer solo play as much as possible anyway

    How difficult is 2?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 11:29 AM PDT

I beat Dragon Warrior 1, and was looking to start the second one. However, I've been putting it off because I read that it's considered the hardest in the series and there's a huge difficulty spike. I hate in old school RPGs where there are really long, hard dungeons with no saving. Is this going to be the case? Can you just grind levels to make the game relatively easy, like lots of other RPGs?

    Luck too good?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 04:33 PM PDT

Hey everyone, just got into DQ tactics today, and was looking into rerolls. I apparently lucked out extremely, and got the Great Troll (s rank) on the first single pull.

Is that a guaranteed S rank? Or am I understanding it right that people actually grind for S ranks in that single pull and I just randomly got lucky as hell?

Viscious King Slime, the god of EXP farms?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 12:37 PM PDT

So, today I did some testing with the Viscious King Slime and the pep-power Electrolight and it seems like our good ol' slimey friend has a 100% chance of getting it to work... IF you do it correctly. You see, his majesty often casts an ability known as Snub which deflects all spells. But it seems as though, if you remove his buff with for exampleRab's ability, and then cast the pep-power before he recharges it, it will spawn metal slimes everytime. For me it has worked 100% of the time so far.
