My impressions of dq 1-4 (no spoilers) Posted: 23 Jun 2021 11:41 AM PDT So i discovered dq a month ago now and have been posting on here pretty frequently about my experience and asking for advice. Ive been playing them in chronological order and I wanna give my impressions of 4 after beating it (main game and after game content) I really liked 1-3, and would rate them as 3 being my favorite followed by 2 and then 1. 1 was a fun bite sized adventure thats only downfall was its age. Being the oldest meant it had the least to do which i didnt hold against it but does effect my enjoyment of the game compared to 2 and 3. I think 2 was a step in the right direction with party members and an open world. It was a bit grindy (although not as bad as 3 imo) and very vague about what you were supposed to do next but was over all very enjoyable and charming just like the first. Three blew them both out of the water. The customization of your parry, open world full of discoveries and interesting story with call backs to the original 2 to tie them all together was great! It was once again a bit grindy but i love rpgs so I didnt mind that aspect at all really and had an absolute blast with it Now, after 4 I have to say... it is by far my favorite so far. I loved the customization in 3 that was missing sadly in 4, but due to that customization none of the characters in 3 were really characters at all (other than maybe the hero i guess?) 4 fixes this issue by introducing a very fun cast who each have their own skills and utility that make them unique. The party dialog made me laugh out loud at times and other than the princess' body guards I loved everyone in the cast (I did come around to them though as they were instrumental to me beating many boss fights, especially Kiryal who I wish could switch rolls with the much more likable Meena). The direction this game took makes me even more excited to play 5 and beyond as it's extra features strengthened the main appealing factors that set dragon quest apart for me when compared to other rpgs (i'ts charming setting and characters, its simplicity and sticking to rpg tradition and simple yet interesting story that isn't taking itself to seriously and can become as fleshed out as you want it to be by talking to npcs for world building or skipping them if you just wanna play the game... which i would never do) As move forward im excited to see how the stories and characters continue to evolve. I hope more than anything that the games remain simple and charming, I dont need complicated rpg plots, sometimes its best to just have a dark lord that you are chosen to beat and thats it. One thing I do hope makes a return is the customization of three. If future games can have compelling and likable characters like 4 and character customization choice and freedom like 3 I could easily see said game become my favorite game ever! Now to get mushy, ive been in a real rough place the last couple of years. I attempted to take my own life in 2019, and then after being hospitalized and receiving therapy one of my best friends also attempted to take his own life... and succeeded. I haven't really felt like myself since, games like pokémon sword and dokkan battle (both things we enjoyed doing together) gave me some relief and escape, but i always found myself forcing myself to play them in an attempt to act more like myself, before the depression. Thats where dq comes in, its the first thing that has brought me real joy everyday since my friend's passing. I look forward to getting up and playing everyday, it gives me genuine laughs and has re-ignited a spark in me that has been dead for a while now. I already owe this series so much, and i cant wait to see where the next games take me .... If you made it this far im sorry for the long ass review and soppy life story. I really wanted to get this off my chest but when i told my family how these games were effecting me they looked at me like i was an alien. None of them see games as anything meaningful, and if anything they see them as things that distract me and as a waste of time. I figured there would be people here who understand how these games have helped me, and hopefully people who have been helped by these games or others in the same way! Anyway, im really done this time! Ill fill you in on my experiences with 5 6 and 9 (i wanna finish the ds ones before moving onto the 3ds) Really looking forward to 5 as a lot of people say very good things about it! Until then have a great day all! [link] [comments]

What’s your favorite magic/skill/technique in the series? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 02:11 PM PDT Mine is Boulder Toss, you usually get it relatively early in the games it's in and it's so OP! It hits every enemy on screen almost guaranteed and for a lot of damage. Its damage doesn't decrease with each enemy it hits and best of all it's completely free to use!! Hustle Dance is a close second for almost the same reasons but with healing your party members. What are some of YOUR favorites and why? [link] [comments]
Massive spoilers for Dragon Quest 11, 1, and 3 i guess. Be warned. Posted: 23 Jun 2021 07:43 AM PDT What the heck was that ending to 11? A woman reading a book and suddenly dragon quest 1's protagonist? So you mean to tell me that 11 was a prequel to basically everything? I thought 3 was the prequel to 1, and now there's a weird timeline i don't understand? What am i missing? [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Jun 2021 02:18 PM PDT ANSWER IN COMMENTS :) Okay, this may be super simple to understand, but sometimes I just get confused when things are introduced too quickly (Rab being the grandfather, Jade being the princess.. etc), so please forgive me. But why are we trying to get to Yggdrasil again? I got the Rainbough, Rab and Jade joined the party, now we need to collect the remaining orbs. But why are we doing this again? No spoilers, please! Please don't make me feel bad, I just get lost sometimes. I can't help how my brain is😅 Also, Jade is King Carnelian's real daughter, yes? The princess of Heliodor? Right? Ty💙 [link] [comments]
DQ3 (Switch version) is getting rough. Am I underleveled? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 06:52 PM PDT I'm a newbie to DQ, trying to start with a classic. It's been fun mostly, but I'm beginning to get frustrated with it. I've just gotten the boat from the king of Portoga and I'm having a difficult time trying to get around to do whatever I need to be doing next. My party is warrior 16, hero 14, priest 16 and mage 15, and no one has changed jobs yet (nor have I gone to Alltrades Abbey yet anyway). Trying to explore at Theddon or Lanson has been difficult and I'm not fond of having to stop exploring to keep reviving my dudes at a church. I don't have the absolute best gear available, but my gear should be totally fine. I'm not sure if I've gone off the course I'm supposed to be going or if I'm genuinely underleveled and in too deep, but it's starting to sour my experience with the game and that hurts because it's such a fun and charming game and I'm trying to experience Dragon Quest. I also feel like info online is somewhat questionable because it always seems to be for the NES and GB versions, and as a Switch version player, I'm finding myself uncertain if it's entirely applicable to what I'm actually playing. Any feedback or suggestions or anything? It's making my head spin. [link] [comments]

Posted: 23 Jun 2021 06:19 PM PDT I'm currently playing through DQ XI for the second time. During my first playthrough, I barely used Jade, as I tended to favour other characters for DPS. However, what I do remember is how uncomfortable the second Octagonia arc was to play with it's generally randy presentation. Playing through it a second time, I'm trying to switch up my playstyle and so I'm using Jade more. As I do so I can't,t help but feel uncomfortable about the way that her combat abilities are treated, especially given what comes later. These things just come off as somewhat gross to me. Beyond how uncomfortable I find it, I find it to be bad and somewhat confusing writing. The second act arcs mark great progression within each characters story often culminating in some new move to denote that. I can think of a few ways in which one might argue Jade's ability is progression. The first is that it is symbolic of her victory over Booga's control, which is lazy when viewed next to the arcs of the other characters. The second is that it is symbolic of her taking control of her sexuality in some Bayonetta-esque fashion. This doesn't make sense because in that case her allure abilities already portray that she has taken control of her sexuality. Furthermore, this, at least to me, doesn't seem to be a facet of her character that is explored elsewhere, as elsewhere she plays the caring bodyguard. The third- the most tenuous- is that this is supposed to symbolise her struggle to overcome her feelings of powerlessness to protect the MC. I don't feel like this is the intention and if it is I think that the writers have severely misstepped in writing this arc. However, if this is the intention I feel like there could have been much better ways of approaching this both to make the message clearer and to not have it come off in such a perverted way. I've done a bit of searching already and understand that other people have felt a similar way, but I want to ask for opinions here from people who are fans of the series. Does it make you uncomfortable? Do you feel like it adds anything to her character? Just to add, this is my favourite game and I don't want this to be seen as an attack on the game or the series, but I feel like this acts as a great stain on its otherwise excellent story and characterisation. Dragon Quest 11 has been a nice change of pace Posted: 22 Jun 2021 03:31 PM PDT I am in the middle of the FFX post-game grind and have been playing dragon quest to try to keep things fresh. Ive never played a DQ game before but I'm really enjoying it! Good game! [link] [comments]
[DQXIS] A Question About The "Important Items" List Posted: 23 Jun 2021 08:57 AM PDT Since you can't get Noah's Archive in this edition, is there anything that replaces the item that is listed between the Calamus Flute and the Album de Médailles, since it says I have an item missing still? Posted: 23 Jun 2021 12:48 PM PDT Trying to come up with a name to use in my playthrough for the hero in XI, and I've narrowed it down to a couple ideas. Feel free to reply with your own ideas in the comments, too! [link] [comments]
Is Dragon Warrior still copyrighted? Posted: 22 Jun 2021 08:38 PM PDT Does Square Enix still own the copyright to Dragon Warrior or did they just leave it be after they copyrighted Dragon Quest [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Jun 2021 01:02 PM PDT Just wanted to share that it was the first Dragon Quest that I have finished. The only other one I've played is XI which I fully intend on finishing, just never got around to it after deciding to wait for S to get the fuller experience. Looking forward to jumping further into this franchise! [link] [comments]

Does Dragon Quest Heroes 1 pick up the pace/action a bit? Posted: 22 Jun 2021 04:04 PM PDT I finally got around to buying and playing this game and I'm about 1.5-2 hours in and while the battle seems fun.... It gets interrupted too often for my liking by cutscenes and dialogue. Is the whole game like this? Battle - > Cut scene - > Armoury-> Cut scene - > Battle? [link] [comments] |
