Revisiting Houses in Act II of DQXI?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 08:21 PM PDT

I am playing through DQXI on Switch for the first time and I am now in Puerto Valor again. My question is, do I need to be going through all the houses again? I was very meticulous about going into each house and checking bookcases etc in the first part of the game, and I don't mind doing it again, but I don't want to do it if I already found all the fun stuff. i already visited Phnom Nonh and didn't seem to find anything new. I would have just googled the question but I googled something earlier and accidentally saw spoilers about the end of Act I, so any non-spoilery help would be appreciated. Thanks!

For the last 2 years I’ve been making my way through the mainline games- I’ve now beat them all but #6. I begin my final journey, and I named the hero Yuji, out of respect for Yuji Horii!

DQ11 Near Ending: How Much is Left?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 10:03 PM PDT

So I'm close to being done with the main story of the game I think. I just simply want to know about how much time is left in this playthrough for the main story. I want to use this information to roughly estimate how to best split my time for the rest of the game, and I'd also appreciate any tips for the section I'm in, without revealing too much of what is to come (I'll detail further below how far I am into the game). So yeah, this is my first Dragon Quest game, and I absolutely loved everything up to now. I can't wait to get even more into the series and into the huge post-game I heard about.

Where I'm at: I'm around 64 hours deep into the main story, with my party around level 45. I just barely pulled through the Gate Keeper fight before Mordegon's floating castle (he knocked out most of my party before I could land a finishing blow). I just want to know how much time is left in the game, so I can prepare and know when to savor the final moments of this story. Also, I wouldn't mind tips on preparing for this final dungeon and fight, since I don't want to lose to a final boss (that'd put me out of the whole "role-playing" aspect of this epic journey, lol). Just don't reveal too much about the bosses or events in the plot. Thanks in advance to anyone who decides to help me out. I love being part of this community now.

    Question About Seeds in DQ11

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 01:38 PM PDT

Hey peeps, Spoiler tag because there's a spoilers in here.

So I played the PS4 version back when it released and because I had some rough times a while back and don't have a PS4 anymore, I picked the game up on Switch because I felt like playing it again. The reason for this post is because VERY late in the game, there a certain something related to going back in time and, if I recall, the game gives you all your non-hero characters back with their same gear, but with lower levels and such - or something like that, I can't quite remember.

Anyway, my question: is it useless to use seeds for stat growth on any character that isn't the hero before this time rewind?

Does anyone know how to skip the mandatory fast travel in DQ8?

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I'm doing a run where I don't use any weapons, armor, items, or fast-travel unless absolutely necessary. Does anyone know if it's possible to glitch your way around the mandatory fast travel? Like when you have to go from the second continent back to the first?

I'm playing on the original Ps2, NTSC version. I know it's possible to glitch out of bounds by rapidly going in and out of the inventory while walking into a load-zone, but I don't know if that makes it possible to get back to the first continent.

The only other point of mandatory fast-travel I know of is when you have to use the God-bird soulstone to get to the monster-town, whatever its name was. I feel like that one would be easy to get to using the trick mentioned above, but I just want to know if anyone knows another way around it. Using that glitch does a number on your fingers, it feels like the microwave hallway from MGS 4.

I'm doing a Dragon Quest XI walkthrough

Hey, I got a very small channel with 500 subs, I used to make a lot of videos on different games but I've quit and lost 97% of my viewers, anyway, I started making videos again while falling in love with DQ XI, so if anyone wants to watch me finish this game (which I'm actually not used to play turn based games) you are welcomed.

Thoughts of a not so newbie (part 2.5 Spin off edition)

    Posted: 25 Jun 2021 06:55 AM PDT

    Intro

So over the course of two previous posts so far (links at the bottom for reference) I've been working at playing through the Dragon Quest games having so far gone through 1-3 and 4-6. My intent upon finishing typing up my last post was to jump straight into the next part of the main series with 7-9 but quickly came to the realization that as a result of having just played 1-6 almost completely back to back I was a bit worn out (not a matter of having any issue with the games just too much of even a good thing starts to be a bit much) but after a bit and bouncing from game to game not really finding something that really fit my current mood I decided to return to Dragon Quest but this time from a different angle tackling some of the spin offs. Primarily in this case being the Builders games (plus Torneko's great adventure). And to kick things off can I just say starting off with Dragon Quest Builders perfectly hit the spot.

    Dragon Quest Builders 1&2

I could probably gush for ages on my experience with Dragon Quest Builders. Going in I was intrigued but curious of what to expect, I like Dragon Quest obviously as my previous posts can attest but I've had mixed feelings on crafting/building games. I enjoy the freedom that they provide but often find myself feeling lost in the face of the pure sandbox I've gotten from games like Minecraft that just expect me to make all my own fun and just be creative. I generally like building but I'm more the type who is best when given some inspiration or prompt rather than just coming up with ideas wholesale, and Dragon Quest Builders had this in spades. The blend of RPG and building game to me from DQB was perfect just enough story to keep me motivated, just enough characterization to keep me engaged, and plenty of room to take the prompt I was given and run with it to make something of my own and get lost for hours just fiddling away on some new building project either because a town member asked for it or just some improvement or rebuild of my own design to touch up what I'd previously built. It was a joy. But while I downplayed the story somewhat I will say that in my opinion the writing in the game itself was nothing to sneeze at. Between the excellent humor that consistently had me chuckling and well thought out what if scenario off of Dragon Quest 1 with it's own twists turns on dramatic moments along the way I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of Builders as it occasionally popped it's head in to push things in a new direction or give me a new goal to incorporate into my build. That's not to say everything was perfect. The game wasn't without it's flaws. While I thought the structure worked I wasn't a fan of the way the games chapters took everything away from you starting you again and again from 0 to build up a whole new town and going through the progression loop you've already been through all over again and regularly found myself wishing I could keep some form or progress even if I was starting a new town rather than losing town, items, gear, and even recipes all at once. I also found it odd how for a game that loved to tout that your character wasn't the hero, wasn't strong, wasn't a fighter it did often seem to push you into a lot of fighting which most of the time just left me wishing I could get back to building since combat was easily my least favorite aspect of the game. But these issues would quickly fall to the wayside as I'd engross myself in some new build project, the progressing storyline of the level, or just wandering the world by going to some high location and looking around for whatever seemed interesting. It wasn't a perfect experience but it was one that I was happy to lose myself in none the less. Dragon Quest Builders 2 however was a bit of a departure from this. I'll start off saying that I don't think Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a bad game, and that fact is at the heart of why I feel so conflicted about it. On paper it's the perfect sequel, just about every single aspect of the game has been improved or built up in some way, and at the same time it ended up being the first game that I couldn't finish. For every great aspect of DQB2 it felt like there was a drawback. For every moment of joy there was "but" waiting in the wings. It was mostly a case of just a constant barrage of little annoyances than any major gripes that just wore me down until I came to sad conclusion that for the first time in a Dragon Quest game I just wasn't having fun. To give some examples: The building is tremendous. So many option and quality of life features. It took all the tools I already loved from the first game and just gave so much more too it, but then the game felt like it grabbed me by the hand and never let go. Where as in the initial game I felt like the balance of guidance to freedom was perfect the sequel just felt like it didn't want me to be free. I wasn't meant to build my town. Depressingly I ended up feeling like the intro to the game which I had before then written off as just a weak tutorial section before the game got going proper was actually fairly accurate to the feeling of the game. I felt like a slave. I felt like a servant to the various town people and the story constantly being pushed into task after task. Sure the first game did this as well but it generally to me felt like it gave enough freedom to where the request felt more like guidance, giving me a jumping off point to then expand from. DQB2 instead made me feel like I was constantly being restricted. Exploration ended up feeling similar. Again on paper it was a massive improvement, bigger areas, more to discover, but then comes the but. I feel like the devs despite clearly designing a world to be explored didn't really plan around it very well. Multiple times I found myself getting bits of dialouge about quests I'd never been given, stumbling upon something I wasn't really meant to be at yet, and while the game adapted well enough to function it didn't adapt well enough to make it feel like it flowed in. As a result I started to feel like the game was actively discouraging me from going off the path laid out before me lest I end up accidentally stumbling onto some spoiler or item I wasn't supposed to see yet. Then we get to the story itself. This is probably the hardest point for me because I genuinely was enjoying the story. I liked the general progression, I enjoyed the story beats, I liked the characters (other than Lulu) but quickly the fact that the story while good constantly felt like it was getting in my way started to make it feel like a chore. Where the first games story felt like it balanced with the rest of the game DQB2 felt more like the story wanted to be center stage often pushing the freedom centric gameplay off to the side and constantly interrupting breaking any flow I could really get going. But I did like the story so I tried to go past it but then every few minutes it felt like the story would stick it's head in as though worried I would forget it was there. This in itself wouldn't be so bad in other titles. I love story in games, it's probably one of the features I most look for in titles. But in this particular kind of game where to me creative freedom and just zenning out is so pivotal to the experience the story just felt at odds with what I was there for. Again I don't think DQB2 is a bad game. Looking at it objectively it still is that amazing sequel that builds on all it's predecessors components. But I think it was more a case where they built towards something that kind of lost what I personally loved about the original. I may still go back and finish it eventually but for now it gets the regrettable distinction of being the first Dragon Quest title I just couldn't finish.

    Torneko's Great Adventure

Now not wanting to leave off on such a downer note there's one other spin off title I played through, going all the way from the most recent spin off to the original one, Torneko's great adventure. This was another case where I went in wondering how I was going to feel. I don't play roguelikes/rougelites. It's never been any real issue with the genre it's just not something I've ever gotten into. But now I found myself staring down the proverbial barrels of not just a roguelike game, but one of the earlier ones and the first of the long running Mystery Dungeon series. And overall I'd say I liked it. Honestly there isn't a tremendous amount to really say other than that. Probably unsurprisingly given it's age it's a rather simple title. As Torneko/Taloon you delve down into the dungeon in classic rougelike fashion gathering items and fighting monsters as you work your way deeper and deeper along the way. I won't say it clicked with me as much as Builders did but for what it was an it's age it was a nice time to play through. I especially enjoyed the little story bits in between milestones to give some fun character and context when you popped back up to the surface which was packed full of all the charm that I've come to love about the Dragon Quest games to begin with as I happily searched out every character to see what was going on with their little story alongside my dungeon adventuring. I can't say it's something I will play again and I'm currently mixed on if I'll try to play the other two games in that spin off series but it's something that I was happy to play for the time it lasted.

    Conclusion

And that's it for this post, again if you'd like to see my previous posts about the games I've played the will be linked at the bottom and if anyone has any questions about aspects of the games I glossed over or failed to mention feel free to ask.

edit: I'm an idiot and forgot to add the links

The highlight of my Dragon Quest XI playthrough so far.

    Posted: 24 Jun 2021 10:36 PM PDT

Please do not comment any more about the story past the first visit of Arboria, I just want to talk about one of the funniest things I read so far in the story.

There are a great deal of witty jokes and one liners and plot revelations I have seen up until where I am currently at in Arboria, right before entering the First Forest.

Chalky revealing himself to be none other than Sudo Nim here.

I was playing this game with my little brother next to me, he was laughing at the fact a little girl lost her parents, I told him to stop being so mean, but as soon as she said her name was Dora, all pity on her we felt was lost as we kept making jokes about how she's as blind as a bat and rely's on others for directions, it did NOT help that she was wearing a purple blouse and orange skirt, an extremely similar color scheme to one of Nickelodeon's beloved cartoon characters who is made fun of for being extremely reliant on help for directions.
