Man, I am just so friggin' psyched for the DQ3 remake

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 06:33 AM PDT

    Some history:

I've been playing since the original DQ1 in the late 80s and have played every mainline game since (minus 6, still). I love DQ9. I love DQ8. I even love DQ2.

But of them all, none has surpassed DQ3. I don't know what it is exactly, but to me that is the pinnacle of this excellent series. Had it for the NES, but the gbc remake was the one I played the most over the years. A couple months ago I even for the Switch version so I could play it on that system.

The biggest draw for me is the ability to compose your team up however you see fit (excepting the hero of course). Second would be how later in the game you see how it all ties in with the very first Dragon Quest game, and setting foot in the original continent- complete with DQ1's awesome overworld tune.

But this new one.. my god it just looks so great. The way the new battle screen is set up to resemble Golden Sun or even the old Shining Force combat looks very refreshing as well. I really hope there is some new content, as well as the improvements the gbc game made over the original (examples: Thieves, Personalities, Boomerangs, PACHISI TRACKS).

So yeah I can't wait to fire this up and make a team of Wizards and Goof-Offs. I guess that's all I gotta' say!

I've just finished a Low Level Hard Mode (Stronger Enemies) run in Dragon Quest XI!

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 10:52 AM PDT

Hey there! I haven't actively posted here before, but I've got a hobby that's lasted well more than half a lifetime of doing challenge runs in JRPGs, and today I've finished a low level challenge on DQ11's Hard Mode (Stronger Enemies Draconian setting enabled). Thought it'd be a good idea to share it with the community. I started recording the run in the fall of 2019 and took quite a long time to finish due to being busy and stressed out most of the time. This is my only completed Dragon Quest challenge as of yet.

    Challenge playlist on YouTube.
    Final Boss battle. (SPOILER warning)

When starting the run, I thought carefully what kind of challenge it would be. If Draconian settings are introduced (and the game is too easy without them, especially the Act 2 part), then which ones? Stronger Enemies seemed like a must, and I thought I'd benefit from killing weaker enemies without getting exp, so I added that. It barely came into play, as items were better off stolen any way. No Equipment and Super Shypox would push the difficulty to extreme limits, the former not letting you protect yourself and the latter adding annoying RNG to battles. No Running would be in conflict with the low level direction, as you'd have to kill enemies in order to get away from them otherwise (basically, it'd just turn the challenge into a No Stealing run, as it's your main motivation of engaging the enemies on the maps) and No Shopping would mostly be a nuisance. The setting of having the Luminary's death bring a game over would make some battles harder, but the Luminary can be switched out of the party around the point you face Tentacles.

Another interesting aspect is the low level. Just how low do we want to go? I defined 'low level' in this context as fighting mandatory battles only. The entire party survives compulsory fights and gets experience out of it. The direction can be taken to an extreme of killing off all characters but one to get even less experience. This way, the Luminary can finish the game at lv. 19, very impotent and terrible at forging +3 accessories for elemental protection. It all seems like a wasted effort because in Act 2 your party members rejoin at a fixed level, which is relatively high. Nevertheless, I think my challenge could be completed this way, though each fight would be a nuisance for forcing you to kill off all characters but one (the one who wouldn't level up; not necessarily the one capable of dishing out the most damage) until the final battles, which do not grant any exp, and the solo battles with the Luminary, already terribly luck-reliant and annoying, would cause one mind-numbing pain. However, it can definitely be done! Just don't look to me to do it.

If I had to choose some of the highlights from my run, those would probably be...

    Slayer of the Sands

    Elysium Bird

    Alizarin

    Tatsunaga

    And the final boss.

According to my save file, I've apparently spent well over 120 hours during the run, not taking into account any resets from failed strategies in boss battles or forging going wrong. For much of the run, I took more time than I needed to in order to have the most effective gear and tools at my disposal for tackling the enemies ahead.

I expect I'll face the postgame content bosses some time in the nearest future so that the run feels most complete.

To allow more discussion than what posting just this could lead to, have you done any challenges in the Dragon Quest series before? If so, which ones were the most interesting ones? If not, what's stopping you from trying it?

Do Sages in Dragon Quest III GBC gain mana?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 11:15 AM PDT

So my mage just got to level 20 and I changed their class to a sage but after gaining 7 levels into sage they didn't gain any MP each level. Does that only happen with the other magic users? I'm starting to think I was supposed to level them a lot more to get a bigger mana pool before switching.

So I finally watched Dragon Quest: Your Story and, as someone who hasn't played Dragon Quest V yet, damn that was a good movie. Can't wait to play Dragon Quest V now. Also, while I don't like the shock factor of it, the ending was good. So, yeah...

Need tips about draconian quest !

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:11 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I'm about to start my first ever dragon quest, and as someone who play mainly SMT and persona, I have some concern about the difficulty

I am actually wondering which draconian quest I should choose, harder mob and no exp from low level mob are guaranted for me. But i'm still not sure about the no shopping / armor thing, i'm scared that It will only make the game more annoying and cut some content what would I loose/ miss with these restrictions on ? Any opinion ? Thank !

Where is a good place to grind?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 05:06 AM PDT

I'm in the endgame now and I want to at least get to level 70 before I fight the ultimate final boss. So what's a good place to grind?

Also I'm pretty sure there's a Pep Power where Jade and The Luminary have a chance to summon a Metal King Slime. So how do I get that?

    Dragon quest gear management?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2021 12:04 AM PDT

How to know when to buy gear in any dragon quest game? I notice in dragon quest how expensive gear can be compared to other jrpgs I have played. I can grind very little in other jrpgs and get my full set. In dragon quest, I have to think what to buy and if the gear is even needed. Can't buy out of habit. Got to see the gear to see if it's worth it. Like do you only buy gear every other town or something else? Something I was curious about.

    Need help getting started

    Posted: 17 Jun 2021 11:01 PM PDT

I've been working my way through the Switch ports since I got them in the last sale and am really enjoying seeing the beginnings of the series. I just beat II and was all ready to hop into III, but I'm getting some major decision paralysis when it comes to what personality I want for my hero and what party mix I should go with. I was hoping I could get some pointers to get me over the hump and get rolling. I'm not looking to min-max or speed run, just to get the most out of a single playthrough and not have to grind a crap ton. I've done a little research but it's hard when you haven't actually played the game. Here is what I've picked up so far:

    • For personality, Vamp has the most stats, but it's better to invest in HP or MP given the return you get on them. Alternatively, go all in on one stat like Strength. How important is MP for the Hero? Coming off II, I'm ok not having her be a big spellcaster, unless I'm missing out on some really nice spells. What would you recommend for her personality?

    • For the party, I like the idea of the Thief for the utility, and read that the Fighter will be cheaper and tougher than the Warrior. That leaves me choosing between a Priest and Mage. Coming from FF, that sounds like a bad choice to have to make, though I haven't been too impressed with magic in DQ so far, so maybe stick with the Priest? Since you can upgrade someone to a Sage later, which seems like a mix of both, maybe I'm best off dumping the Mage.

Again, not trying to over-optimize, just want to have an enjoyable run, get a good overall feel of the game before the big remake, and not gimp myself with bad early choices.

    Thanks!
