Finally got a copy of DQ 8 on ps2! Hopefully someday I will find the 3ds version, but for now. I'm happy to have this in my hand.

Dragon Quest fan base in a nutshell

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Sometimes I feel really bad about killing the enemy monsters in Dragon Quest games, they are so cute!

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 12:59 AM PDT

Do you have any kind of excuse for killing them? Lmao

I've heard people say things like "it's self-defense, they attack first" while others say that monsters are evil (which is not exactly the case, because there ARE good monsters out there).

For me, I think it's a mixture, it's not like they are evil by nature because they are monsters, but some are; either they become evil due to mind control (like in the anime) or just out of... ignorance? hunger? anger management issues? Anyway, when the battle is finished, it says you "defeated the monster", not "killed", so I like to think they become good after losing, or they just enjoy the fight as practice, as some humans do.

    What do you think?

How do boosting seeds work with re-classing?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 06:47 AM PDT

So basically the title, but I'll expand a little more.

When you re-class into a different class your level is set back to 1 and your stats are accordingly. Now how does this work with the seeds that can boost your stats?

If I boost my max hp as a warrior for example and reclass into paladin, what happens to the extra hp I got from the seed? Does it just disappear? Is it tied to the class I used the seed for, so re-classing back to warrior would give back the extra hp?

    How exactly does this work?

    Grinded too hard

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 05:05 AM PDT

Okay, so I was playing Dragon Quest XI again, and I grinded to level 62 before going to take on Jasper Unbound. Erik managed to take out Jasper in three turns with the cobra strike + divide + victimiser while Serena and Hendrik buffed and took out Jasper's defence. This strategy worked on Mordegon, phase 1 and 2.

Should I watch Abel Yuusha Densetsu and Dai no Daibouken (1991) before jumping to the remake?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I gathered the episodes of Abel Yuusha and the old Dai no Daibouken plus the specials and also Emblem of Roto. I played only DQ8 and 11 so I'm new to early DQ Lore.

With that, am I going to miss a lot of content before I watch the new 2020 anime remake?

    Dragon Quest II Erased

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:44 PM PDT

20 hours into my play through of DQ2 for the original NES, the game glitched and erased my game…so totally pissed…weak sauce. It's like being 10 again….

    This probably wouldn't happen, but....

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 11:38 AM PDT

    Spoilers for 8 and 11:

Imagine a dq8 sequel. Bangers and mash all grown up, trodain castle all repaired, rydon tower completed. Seeing the world again would be great on a home console. They'd have to reinvent an antagonist. I was something similar to dq11's calasmos showing up after mordegon is gone, maybe something shows up after empyrea and rapthorne are gone?

Just making an excuse to see dq8 again on a home console, sadly a remake is less likely since the 3ds version. What would you guys think of a direct sequel?

[spoiler] DQ2 on Switch: an UX problem which I solved myself but which took me too much time

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 07:39 AM PDT

So I have these pieces of information: (1) the princess which is supposed to accompany me is turned into a dog (2) I have to find a mirror to lift the curse (3) there is a dog in the village which accompanies me when I "click" on it/her.

I found the mirror. It's pretty clear that the dog is the princess and that the mirror will change her back to her human form. But: when I try to use the mirror, the game tells me the mirror cannot be used here! I tried to use the mirror when the dog joined me, with no luck. I tried to use the mirror when the dog faces my way. No luck also. OK, maybe it's a trap and there's this other dog in this other castle and that's really the princess: tried the other dog, no luck.

Then I discovered (I normally activate objects with the A button) I can bring up the "use" menu with the Y button even when the exclamation mark appears on the character I make dialogue with: and that's it - I have to maneuvre the hero so that the exclamation mark appears on the dog, press Y, use mirror - abracadabra, the princess is here.

I bought the cartridge legally. There was no printed manual. There were some tips and tricks burried in a menu somewhere, but who reads those? Why the devs couldn't make it that when the dog accompanies you, using the mirror will free her? It should be just one line of code or whatever... How was this on the NES version? Was is also that cryptic?

I am quite a newcomer in the DQ universe,I liked every game I played so far, but this... this seemed just like creating an artificial problem or something.

Please no spoilers in the comments, I will continue with playing DQ 2. At least I leveled up my characters a bit because I was searching for clues all over the place. I like the game very much, except for this thing.

I need a name for my dqb2 character. He has green eyes, is white, and has brown hair. Looks kinda like Goku from DBZ

For those of you still playing DQM:J2, what were your teams?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 03:50 PM PDT

Hi! Hope everyone's day is going well.

I'm literally playing through the game one more time and for an instant I realized there was so many monsters in the game with so many skills and equipments that the team building is endless.

I wanted to know what you all had for main team for gameplay? And if you had more than one team during gameplay, what were they and what did they focus in?

So far I'm fighting the Sagittarius based monster right now and have a duo team of Beetleboy and Dragon Slime (and without a third monster). I also wanna build a Lootist team soon for item drop farming in this game (for things like machine parts and beastie bites) and a scouting team (which I heard Beetlebully and 2 Conclave XY's are good for 60% Giant monsters).

Also if you know what teams or at least skills I should go for, let me know. This is like my 5 time playing and I'm planning on finishing it past post game. I haven't played post game cause main story has been too much fun plus I didn't know what to do post game.

    DQ2 encounter rate

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:01 PM PDT

So, I read somewhere that the Switch version of Dragon Quest 2 had its encounter rate significantly reduced especially compared to Dragon Quest 1.

Am I the only one who thinks this is some kind of joke? I can't walk 2 steps without encountering some monsters.

I finally played a Dragon Quest game. Well, “Dragon Warrior” I guess I should say. If you want a way to long look at the game; take a peek. If not, my thoughts are also in the comments. I was impressed by what it was doing — but it feels like it has nowhere to go but up.

Replaying XI on 2D - and considering what's coming next in the series

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:51 AM PDT

I've been replaying XI on 2D a fair while after I already completed XI on the original launch version. I've been impressed by the level of detail and care that went into remaking scenes through a 2D sprite engine. I swear every 'big' cutscene is just as memorable as the 3D version was. It just brings me back to playing V and VI in the early 2000's.

It's also helped me see the game with new eyes, now that the 3D veneer is removed.

*In 3D, the world had random rubble from old buildings or villages long abandoned. It helped create the feeling that this world was old and had history. In 2D, these are missing. I think that really added to the atmosphere. Ruined kingdoms add to this, too. I hope this continues.

*The world feels rather small. I don't have metrics for number of tiles or any way to compare the 3D world of XI to the 3D world of VIII, but it just 'feels' smaller. Less countries, less villages, less towns. XI certainly gets more value out of EACH town than previous games because you revisit them, but somehow the vibe of the game is impacted because there's this feeling of "I've been here before." The characters speak as if this is a wide, wide world, but there's not much out there. Kings are kings of...a town? An empty countryside? This is sort of a trope or limitation of the genre. I hope XII has a bigger world with more places to visit.

*Day/night - for some reason, this didn't bother me much in 3D, but in 2D it's pretty obvious that day/night really doesn't impact the game very much as it did in previous games. NPCs are largely the same. Shops are still open. I hope there's more dramatic day/night cycle changes in upcoming games.

*Riding/mount system - except for solving puzzles/getting over obstacles, the riding system didn't do much in 2D, and in retrospect, it didn't do much in 3D either. It was a lot of fun, though. I hope they explore this in the future. Perhaps buying equipment for your horse would be a good addition to the series. Perhaps you'll need to buy a horse for each member of your party. This could be a cool mechanic! Maybe XII could start as a solo quest where your horse is a really big part of your tactics and gameplay.

*Luminary/Hero of Legend - XI is pretty explicitly about the role of the Luminary and finding your birthright. But we've had other DQ games where the hero wasn't a prophecy or wasn't made a hero by birth, but by choice and opportunity. The twist that XI gave us was that some called you 'Darkspawn' and thought you were evil, versus people not believing your origin (DQ IV) or just not being able to help (I and II). But what does the Luminary do after the quest? What's a hero do when he peaks at 17? It would be interesting to be a hero in XII who had already defeated a great evil when he quested at 16 or 17 and is now... 40 when the next evil comes. That would be different! You know, sort of like all of us who played as Erdrick as kids and now we're OLD.

*Forge - The forge is great! The QOL change to buy ingredients was a good improvement. But now I miss the alchemy pot so I could make my own potions and medicines. Maybe there should be a place for both in XII?

*Party member sub-quests: XI's 'S' version gave us a look at what the party members were up to after Act I. VII gave us a solo subquest with one of it's characters. IV introduced the cast by giving them a chapter full of subquests. Maybe a new mechanic would be to have party members take care of different quests when the story takes a fork in the road? That might have multiplayer use or just be a way to increase replay value. Or maybe we just keep the party size down to 4 so there's no one left in reserve. I like all the characters and I wish I could use all of them.

Woodus Synthesizing search says error code 404?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I used to play DQM Joker 2 often and used Woodus for information so I could know what monsters to synthesize to get the ones I wanted. Last time I used the site was five years ago. I recently got back into DQM Joker 2 and wanted to use the site's synthesizing search. But it shows the error code 404. Was it removed?

    Can't allocate skill points

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:38 AM PDT

So I've put about 7 hours of playtime into Dragon Quest VIII on my 3DSXL, both my character and Yangus are at lvl 9 and... I can't seem to allocate the skill points that I have gotten. When it asks "do you want to allocate?" I tap the A button, but nothing happens.

Is this a glitch, or am I doing something wrong?
