Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

Finally got my hands on these little guys! Hope they don't run away...

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 06:35 AM PDT

My collection is almost complete! So sad that I might never finish it with how expensive IV, V & VI have become, I really hope SqEnix decide to re-release them at some point, or the prices drop to semi-reasonable. Here's hoping we get X at some point too, either online or offline.

How’s that Dragon Quest turn based strategy game?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:08 AM PDT

In case you didn't know, Nintendo, Square Enix, and Intelligent Systems collaborated on a turn based strategy game for the DSiWare shop called Dragon Quest Wars. And aside from the remakes of Dragon Quest 7 and 8, it's the only other Dragon Quest game available on the 3DS eShop (in North America).

    DQ11 S Bug (MS Store)

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Hi all. Hit a weird bug (I think) and not sure what to do.

In act 2, I recently recruited my 4th party member after the events at Puerto Valor and I have access to my ship. The gamefaq guide I'm following says that my next stop is Zwaardust region and I am supposed to be attacked on the ship when I near it and a sequence of cutscenes occur. I made my way there and there were not cutscenes, but I'm able to dock. If I talk to the NPC in the house nearby, he says "oh you finally woke up" or something referencing the missed cutscenes. I tried moving on and staying the night at Warriors' Rest Inn but my screen just turns black and I pretty much have to close the game.

For what it is worth, my current objective if I open the map is "Head outside."

Any ideas on how I can solve this issue? Pretty bummed. :(

    Thanks!

Playing dragon quest x with English translation for months, 160 hours in and finally bought it, it's amazing!

    Posted: 02 Sep 2021 09:23 AM PDT

Like the title says, I've been obsessed with DQ X now that you can play it will easy to use translation tools on pc and it's amazing. You can play for free for the core game and first expansion, it could be 170 hours+ of free gaming to try it out. I just bought the full game and sub because I like it so much, may be my favorite of all time. The great thing about it is it's first a dragon quest game then an mmo. And the music is soooo good..

I just want people to know you can play this if you want and it's great, if you have any questions let me know!

    DQ11 S Casino Tokens Question.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:49 PM PDT

was doing research, and found that the trick from 8 was still effective in 11.

the question is, should i do it in the 1/3 blocks, or focus on the center row down the board?

for clarification, i mean the 1-12, 13-24 and 25-36, or going straight down the middle, from 2 to 35.

i remember doing both in 8, but 8 also had a smaller roulette wheel/board.

on the 10 token board, i just landed a 5, with the 1-12 square maxed out and got 17k tokens. at this point, im building up using the 10 board, to be able to do the 100, then finally the 200.

DQM:J2 Calculator Update + Planning a stream to test the test spreadsheet

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:22 PM PDT

So I have a working (with some syncing bugs) Calculator Prototype using a Google spreadsheet. I am wanting to test it out this weekend but I am not sure which day. It will most likely be at 10am PST (West USA Time) at My Twitch and I will be testing it using the emulator and having some monsters prepped for Fusion. (Edit the word prototype in this paragraph is mainly cause that's what I call my spreadsheet version cause it's my own prototype in testing calculation stuff out.)

I do have some things on my calculator that may or may not function within the program itself at full expectation after first launch for DQMJ2 Calc Program prototype is made but I currently have some stuff down as a base and ready for future updates after launch and learning the code I need to make it work.

It's a process but I may have it working as a program for testing for the community in mid or late October (hopefully mid)

Last words from me: I'm motivated to get this working and hopefully I can get this done before my next programing school year adds up for me.

The original version of Dai (Fly) anime was better

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 11:39 AM PDT

    1. The new animation style doesn't resemble Toriyama's at all, the first one looked fairly similar.
    2. They censored a lot and some scenes even look stupid with the censor or don't make sense
    3. They recolored a bunch of characters and I don't know if it was a "correction" but IMO they look worse
    4. Completely rushed, seriously all the scenes that had an emotional impact are a joke now, they butchered a lot of the original content
    5. The music of DQ is gone and the new soundtrack is the most generic thing you can get, it is godawful.

I will finish it but the original was way better IMO and still will be sad they never finished it... I am glad this version will finish the sotry but it is inferior to it's predecesor.
