What will most likely happen to the music of Dragon Quest

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 02:46 AM PDT

Hi everyone. As many of you know, Koichi Sugiyama, the composer of the Dragon Quest series, has recently passed away. Despite the horrible person he was, he was a good composer, one of the 4 grandfathers of video game music and an inspiration to many, including myself.

However, I'm not here to talk directly about that. Some of you are, understandably, wondering what will happen to the music of future Dragon Quest games. I'm here to put some of these worries to ease.

In terms of who the new composer for the series, or at least Dragon Quest XII, could be, it will most likely be Hayato Matsuo. For those who don't know, Hayato Matsuo was Sugiyama's protege, one of the composers of Final Fantasy XII and Jojo's Bizarre Adventures and has worked on arrangements of Dragon Quest for the original Adventures of Dai anime and the DS versions of 4, 5 and 6, as well as working on other stuff. Here's a link to his Wikipedia page. Safe to say, I think the music's in good hands.

In terms of the rights of the music of Dragon Quest 1 to 11, I don't know. If you didn't know, every song that Sugiyama has ever composed was owned by him, thus, he had the final say on what music and which versions of them can be used in the DQ games. Now, like I said earlier, I don't who the rights will go to between his family, Square Enix or a third party. But let's hope the rights go to Square Enix.

Which platform is best for Dragon Quest XI?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 04:13 AM PDT

Hi! I have my pick of platforms for Dragon Quest XI and I'm wondering which one is best. Does the Switch one run well? Would I be missing out on amazing visuals by playing on Switch? Did the game receive any next-gen upgrades or anything like that?

Is there any “tactics” option that is reliable in battle?

What are some cool memories from when you first heard music from DQ?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 02:29 AM PDT

The textures and contours of the human condition so reliably resonated in the music he composed. As a boy playing Dragon Warrior III and DQVII, I encountered what seemed like the essence of despair, calm, hope and adventure beyond my comprehension but also innately accessible in the world he partly brought to life. The timeless wisdom the series' writing offered was accentuated by the energetic ways his notes would dance and cry every single time. I'll cherish the magic Koichi Sugiyama brought into the world until my very last breath. What's a cool memory of yours with DQ?

I'll never forget the first time this played. My dad stopped to listen and was stunned that the game he thought was for kids had such an elegant compositions

Should I wait for DQ7 and 8 on Switch or Buy them on 3DS?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 09:44 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

After completing DQ11S, I am completely smitten with this series and want to experience each entry! I own most of the games except for 3 (waiting on the HD-2D remake), 7 and 8.

With the rumour that the 3DS eshop may close in early 2022, I would like to buy DQ 7 and 8 (at reasonably prices) soon while I still have the chance. After the recent ports of 1-3 on switch, it seems like the rest of the games may eventually get ported as well, but I'm not sure how long that process may take.

Would you recommend picking up DQ 7 and 8 on 3DS or wait for a potential announcement of switch ports?

    Thanks!

Does dragon quest 11 get harder?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 08:36 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I just finished the demo and I'm debating whether I should buy this game or not. This is my first JRPG and so far the game has been kind of easy. I have my four party members set to fight automatically and the speed of fights set to very fast, and my party seems to manage well on their own. Is there a time where I need to actually play the fights or can the CPU just win on it's own?

Can you do the story online Co-op in Dragon Quest Heroes 1 or 2?

There seems to be an online component but I would love if there is a co-op campaign for 3-4 players.

    Question for the Zenithian Trilogy

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 07:08 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I'm a new dragon quest fan and currently going through the series in order since a couple months, and I'm almost done with the 3rd one and I loved all of them!

My only problem with the Erdrick Trilogy tho is that I often felt guilty to look up a guide because I felt like a lot of items or objectives were a bit cryptic, which is common from games of that era. (Looking for a specific bush to get said item, some orbs in dq3 i found really hard to find, etc)

Don't get me wrong I think this might become my favourite series of all time but I always feel guilty when I need to look at a guide but I rather do this then become frustrated with the game and stop. Currently in college so I don't feel like walking back to every NPC every time to make sure I didn't miss a clue (I do take notes when getting clues in my phone so I can remember tho)

As I'm heading through 4-6, I was wondering if you guys think I'm still going to have to look up guides often or if the games start to get less cryptic about this kind of stuff?

Already bought 4 on IOS and can't wait!

Would love to talk with you all about DQ anytime! (I'm a music student at Berklee and LOVE THE MUSIC)

Dragon Quest XI's third act was terrible

    Posted: 07 Oct 2021 06:00 AM PDT

As my first dragon quest game besides 1, this was a great game with fun combat and a story that while predictable at some points was a familiar tale of a chosen hero against a dark master taking over the world.

Not a very original tale, but it was nice to have a swerve at the end of act one where Mordegon takes over, splits the party, and generally takes over.

Building the party back up, you get to deal with their more personal problems in addition to getting back with the luminary. Helping Hendrik atone, helping Slyvando and Erik reconnect/reunite with their family, helping Serena overcome her loss and become the reincarnation she was supposed to be, Rab helping you train and then rescuing your father. And Jade is there too!

People make the most of what they have been dealt know and move on. They grow and move forward, creating a NEW sword of light because the old one is broken and in the past and the only way is to FORGE a new path.

And then after defeating Mordegon and the wet fart of his final boss battle, it's just over. The world is saved. Talk about anticlimactic.

But then, after the credits and the little bits of walking around, suddenly there's a tower of time and we can undo the events and undo all the bad stuff. We just have to destroy this entire timeline in order to do it. So after undoing all the personal growth and achievement, you go back and the main character proceeds to say fuck all to his team members about what's going on.

Defeat the dark one again, but in an even more anticlimactic way, and hey look at that, an even more evil bad guy who is the cause of the main bad guy! He's so evil, you won't get his explanation until after you defeat him and get his backstory of "wow he's like if evil had a form".

Get help from the Seer who was actually Morcant who became Mordegon, despite being in the same location at the same time throught multiple points in the game, defeat the evil space bug, and then have serenica go back in time. I know we've established that this will destroy the current timeline, but we'll just ignore that so this character can get a happy ending.

Credits roll, and now it's time to give some exposition about Calasmos and the Tree Dragon. THE END

This third act completely dragged the game on way longer than it needed to be to tell a good story. So many weird decisions to undo character development and nothing interesting in terms of gameplay to make this part of the journey feel different than act 2, except now Serena is worse. I feel that they could used several passes through an editor or something.

Thanks for visiting my rant. I am looking forward to the remake thing of DQIII and news on DQXII.

    Dragon Quest 12 combat

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 08:46 PM PDT

I think by changing the combat a bit means like adding layers to the turn based combat like octopath traveler did with weaknesses and boosting etc. and having you balance and customize your party in a different way. But not to change the turn based combat (I hope they dont), or copy octopath. What do you think about the comment on DQ12s combat?
