Man. I got into act 3 on PS4, so I knew this was coming. But the scenes in Arboria still hit me super hard. Something about mourning parents and siblings just makes me lose it like a crying maniac.

Dragon Quest V for iOS, beat the casinos

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Hey all, found something interesting yesterday and I didn't see a rule on the sidebar against cheating (a bit?) so I thought I'd share to help out people who are on the iOS version of DQ V.

On iPhone, there's an accessibility control called Switch Control. This will essentially let us set up an autotapper which is perfect for tap blasting those slot machines!

Bear with me, most of these settings you're about change I made without reading documentation because they just seemed like they made sense to set them this way. You probably won't need some of these changes. Meh.

    1. Go to settings or just pull down on the springboard and search for 'switch'. You should see the settings app come up with "Switch Control"
    2. Scanning style should be Auto. Set Tap behavior to Always Tap. Set Focused Item After Tap to Current Item.
    3. Go to switches -> Add a new switch -> Screen -> Full Screen -> Tap
    4. Go back a screen (Switch Control on the top left) -> now go to Recipes -> Create a new recipe -> name it something like DQ5
    5. Assign a switch -> Full Screen -> Custom Gesture
    6. Here is where we set up tapping on the location of the slot machine's spin button. Now that you're on the New Gesture screen, I'd background this app, open up DQ5, go to a slot machine and bet the maximum. I usually do the red one since I'm at like 75k tokens right now, so i bet like 900 all the time.

My fat ass just grabbed a potato chip or something and put it on top of the Spin button -> carefully backgrounded DQ5 -> went back to settings where it was ready to add a new gesture and tapped where the potato chip was a couple times till the timer on the bottom ran out. Now save.

    7) Back in the recipes menu, where its says "Launch Recipe", set it to your new DQ5 recipe. This is setting the default when you activate the switch control in-game.

    8) You should be able to back out all the way to the main switch control menu and double check your settings. We can now go back to DQ5 and test it out.

    9) In DQ5 at the slot machine with the maximum bet set, triple click the Home/Power/Whatever you wanna call it button that isn't the volume buttons. (I'm on an iPhone XR but this should work for whatever has a recent version of iOS). You should see a message about the Switch Control being turned on and if you click the screen anywhere it should activate your DQ5 recipe and click where ever you had set it. By tapping the screen multiple times, you can queue the activation as many times as you clicked. So here I'd just quickly tap a few times and let it ride for 10 mins or so and check back to see if I scored.

    10) Finally, you can deactivate the switch control at any time by triple clicking the home/power button, but if for some reason it doesn't let you, just lock the screen and triple click it there to turn it off. You would do this if you happen to check in on your phone and you somehow landed on all 7's.

I know it seems like a lot of steps but it's really not. I will edit this post with a screen recording of my set up. Happy gambling!

Edit1: For those interested, here is the Switch Control documentation: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201370

Heres a vid on how to do it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9trxs60in1y86uc/RPReplay_Final1571922763.MP4?dl=0

Edit2: Turns out the slot machine spin button is coincidentally in the same position as the call accept button :p

Just finished DQXI act 3 and am a bit confused about the save file...

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 02:16 AM PDT

So I just finished Act 3 (which I loved btw) and the final credits rolled. I saved when it asked me to after the credits, so now my save file says "Hero of Erdrea" in place of the location. When I open the save file, the Calasmos fight and his orb thingy are still on the map. Did I do something wrong, or is this a Breath of the Wild situation where I only have the star next to my save file to signify I've finished. This would make sense but I'm a bit confused because I thought maybe the star would change colour or something after Act 3.

Any way to improve luck in Poker?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:27 AM PDT

Is there any way to improve your luck in poker? I have played over 2600 games of poker without a royal jelly flush nor winning 10 games of double or nothing in a row. Is there a table that is better? Or a new item in the Switch version that improves luck. Is there anything to give me hope?

Why does DQXI in the West have basically a full VO?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 05:50 AM PDT

Every major scene is voice acted, like really. I'm impressed. It feels like 90% of the game is voice acted. Which, I know that's a very wrong number but there is an absolute TON. I can't imagine playing this game without it, even in Japan it'd just feel so weird silent.

I heard it's because it's tradition, but it is a shocker still.

Dragon Quest 2 NES Rom Hacking

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 04:24 AM PDT

Does anyone here have experience with rom hacking for the old Dragon Quest games? I don't intend to get to work on it any time soon but I had an idea for a Dragon Quest 2 hack I'd be interested in pursuing at some point in the future and it seems that it'd be easier to work with the NES games than their GB or SNES equivelants.

Specifically I thought of an idea that would need a fourth party member to be added to DQ2. Whether this means having them swap out through talking to one in an overworld location or having a fourth party member on the field at all times I'm not sure.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the process one would have to undertake to do so.

[DQXIS] Sharing a few things: Art Asset rips, Quest Catalogue text datamine, and item collection cataloguing (including 'missable' items)

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:51 PM PDT

I could've made this into multiple threads, but I just wanted to get this info shared cause I put it off for too long. So let's get it over with rapid fire.

    Art Asset Rips

    https://mega.nz/#F!CqhFhAjS!8jsDBgmSqAJBN2ZV4lxUsg

I wanted to do this the moment I saw the new artwork used for story battle dialog Basically, I extracted the packages and converted the UE4 assets into PNGs using Gildor's UE Viewer. Feel free to use them for your wikis or whatnot.

The folders are organized as such, please be cautious of spoilers if you haven't completed the game. Such as party member, monsters, or other stuff.

    • Character
      • Battle Dialog (the story battle dialog artwork, be wary of spoilers)
      • Character Builder (All the textures and icons used for the Character Builder)
      • Party Members (various face artwork used for the party, be wary of spoilers)
      • Skill Icons
      • Statuses (all the buff/debuff icons)
    • Items (artwork of all items)
      • Categories (menu icons)
      • Consumables (usable items)
      • Equipment (armor and accessories)
      • Key Items
      • Materials
      • Mini-Medal Reward Icons (large images used when you get a Mini Medal reward)
      • Shields
      • Weapons
    • Localization Replacements - EN
      • By default, the file images are all for the Japanese version. When your language is set to English, it goes to the L10N/EN folder to get certain stuff, like the English logo, to load instead.
    • Maps
      • My favorite thing, all the maps used in the game. The naming scheme is like this. If a map has an element that changes (like a new entrance or whatnot) a "MapGimmick" image gets placed on top of it. If it's a dungeon, the "Mask" image is overlayed on top of it to give the effect of you "unmasking" it as you explore.
      • Map Icons
        • Icons used for the maps. Like shops and whatnot, and overworld stuff.
    • Omake
      • If I remember correctly, original Japanese version had a playable DQ1 after the credits. This is probably from that?
    • Tickington-Only Monsters
      • All the 2D artwork from the Defeated Monster List of the Tickington-only monsters. There's a spoiler in there at the end.
    • Title Screen
      • Title Screen assets.
    • UI Common
      • Core UI stuff, like button icons, if anybody wants to use it for PC via DQHook. I have some of the PS4 (from the Japanese version) ripped, but the extractor doesn't work well and half are messed up. :<
      • Also at the end are a spoiler of all the (Post-Game)"wedding" photos.

The next things I plan to rip are Casino related textures. That'd be cute to have.

    Quest Catalogue Text Datamine

    https://pastebin.com/C1RPGm8y

This is a quick one, but I extracted all the text used for all the quests in the catalogue as you go through them. Starting from when it's a "???" to "You completed!".

The reason I did this was cause no sites have transcribed it before. So again, it'd be nice if people used these for wiki entries or sites, so it can be complete like other games have for their quests (like an Elder Scrolls or Fallout site)

I had to correct some characters, and adjusted it accordingly. One quest name uses an en-dash (–), some entries uses an em-dash (—). And there were some entries that used single open/close apostrophes, so I did open/close quotes instead (" ").

I'll upload a PC equivalent later, the only differences are there's no Tickington quests, and the Mister Vista quest has different entries.

    3D Mode Item Locations

PS4/PC Item Locations: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ah26vepjex1rfgc/AAAWMWAV5y_TLqg14wbJTNKxa?dl=0Switch Item Locations (WIP): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/r0c8jnhsfaiou7v/AAAOQqaSi8xyCQx7TuAhXNl1a?dl=0

So I'm nearly done with Act 2, but this is my third playthrough. Before I've catalogued every since item location while following the Japanese PS4 Guide Book. This is for those that want to collect EVERYTHING in the game, so Erik's Nose for Treasure doesn't give any more loot to find.

It's organized by type of region (towns, overworld, etc). First screenshot is me using Noah's Archive/Nose for Treasure to see the item count for each map area, then collecting it. Each location may have notes detailing specific things about treasures. The Switch folder notes may have out of date info from the change, so I need to clean that up here and there.

The Switch folder may randomly disappear, that's because I'm updating it, and it's easier to wipe and copy/paste my working folder, which is separate from Dropbox.

I have a thread on GameFAQs with others talking about it too.

    List of 'Missable' Items

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UMR8kDZWWJAwIkBNiJrwgRVy2MtdYbtfjYKmoYWHdrE/edit?usp=sharing

So the items listed doesn't mean they can't be gotten elsewhere, it's just that specific pot or barrel or whatever can't be looted again. This also is for those that want to be true completionists, and not want to miss anything.

I structured it so it goes by Acts, and spaced out each section to help avoid spoilers. And I don't go into too much detail as to why it's missable or why other things aren't. Trust me on that.

There's actually one potentially permanently missable key item from Tickington. The "Champion's Code" book. It can only be gotten during the "Mother Knows Best" quest from the old man in DQ3 world, Erdrick's Future Home". It doesn't count towards the Item List, but you can't collect it if the quest is completed. Unless there's a bookshelf where it could be alternatively collected, in which case, please let me know (with a screenshot).

    ---

Okay that should be everything. Now it's time for dinner and for me to finish Act 2. :)

Spoiler - my favorite moment in DQXI so far

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:10 PM PDT

Hendrik visibly holding back tears after King Carnelian tells him he's saved Heliodor. Especially after his panic that the Last Bastion had been pillaged and deserted. That got me choked up good and proper. Made me realize just how emotionally exhausting it must have been for him to protect the region with only a few men.

Favorite version of each game from main series

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:32 PM PDT

As everyone knows there are multiple versions of all games from the main series except for DQ9. I have replayed the games from the main series many times and still will. Here is my fav versions of each game and why.

Dragon Quest: Switch version is my fav. You are able to level up faster and can beat the game faster. I played Dragon Warriior many times on the NES as that is the one I started on. I still love that version but it takes awhile to level up when compared to later games in the series. I like SNES and GBC versions too but I think I am only gonna play the game on Switch from now on.

(Will only replay DQ1 Switch version mostly, might play SNES, GBC, or NES versions again someday)

Dragon Quest II: Without a doubt Switch version. Main reason is because that is only version that allows you to return/zoom to most areas. The original NES version only allowed you to return to last place you saved, which meant using the boat and travel doors a lot. At the time I did not mind until DW3 came out and you could return to all kinds of places. I was surprised they did not fix this on the SNES and GBC versions.

(Will only replay DQ2 Switch version, wont play SNES, GBC, or NES versions anymore)

Dragon Quest III: SNES version is my fav. It added Pachisi tracks, Bonus Dungeons, New Classes, Medals, and all kinds of other great stuff. Plus it fixed the AI battle issue all the multi-party NES versions had in which your character would attack nobody if the monster you set them to attack got defeated first by someone else. Despite the GBC version adding more monsters and another bonus dungeon I still like SNES version better cuz of the graphics. Plus you need monster medals to get to the GBC bonus dungeon. The Switch version is my 3rd fav version of DQ3 as it is basically a new graphics version of the NES game. I was mad that the Pachisi Tracks were not on Switch.

(Will replay DQ3 SNES and GBC versions this is one of my all time fav games of series, wont play NES version anymore and will play Switch version just once)

Dragon Quest IV: DS version without a doubt although I have never played the Japanese PlayStation version. But the NES version I could only play that by using Game Genie to allow me to control my party member when I got the wagon. I did not like that I lost control of them.

(Will only replay DQ4 DS version, will never play NES version again)

Dragon Quest V: DS version, mainly cuz it put it back to 4 party members like other DQ games. I have not played the PS2 version yet.

    (Will only play DS version)

Dragon Quest VI: DS version, just felt more like the modern DQ games.

    (Will only play DS version)

Dragon Quest VII: PlayStation version. Yes I like the PS1 version better than the 3DS version. Why? Cuz 3DS version did the same thing DQ9 did in which when you change classes you lose all the spells. To me that is not how the series should be. I love the class system on PS1 in which I build an ultimate party where everyone has mastered every class and everyone knows all the healing spells, all the great battle spells, and revive spell, etc. I love having 4 Godhands doing battle with the main boss at the end.

(Will only play DW7 PS1 version, have played it many times and looking forward to new replay)

Dragon Quest VIII: 3DS version cuz you dont have to wait for the alchemy pot. I love the PS2 version but it did often take awhile to wait for stuff in the pot and sometimes I needed to shut the game off and go somewhere and was waiting on the alchemy pot to finish. I also like the 2 new playable characters on 3DS version although they are not really needed.

(Will only play DQ8 on 3DS, wont play PS2 version anymore)

Dragon Quest XI: Switch version cuz it has the 2D version option which reminds me of all my fav 2D Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior games and it is so cool to play DQ11 as regular version then replay it a whole different look.

(I can see myself replaying 2D Switch version many times. As for main 3D version, I have not played that on Switch yet so I will see if that is better than PS4 for a future replay)
