Just finished Dragon Quest 11S last night. Thoughts/spoilers. Posted: 16 Nov 2019 06:20 AM PST First of all, this is my favorite game of all time. Dropped 140 hours into it and haven't played anything else since I started. DQ8 was my favorite game of all time before I played 11, but 11 is basically an all-out attempt to make 8 on steroids, and it delivered. There was a lot of anti-frustration/modernization that finally made its way into this game, and the result is, IMO, an incredible game. The cast was great. From a characterization perspective, Erik felt like a Final Fantasy character in a Dragon Quest game, but it worked. I liked how when you go to Weaver's Peak they all think he's the DQ6 hero though lol. Though that's a good parallel too because Mia is a big bro-con just like Tania. Sylvando was hilarious. You could always count on him to break the somber mood. Rab could get you fired up or get you laughs in any given moment. I really feel for him and what he's experienced throughout the quest, finally reuniting with his grandson. Jade - I liked her, but sometimes it felt like she was an attempt to create a character hotter than Jessica, and sometimes it felt forced. She's a cool "big sis" type character and action chick. Hendrik - Started out the "honorable" of the two enemy Heliodor knights. Still, I never thought he'd join the party until I arrived at Last Bastion. He's pretty vital though to the storytelling in act 2, as his serious, about business attitude - especially early on as a party member - enforces the grim tone of act 2. He lightens up as things go on and obviously in act 3. Veronica - Straight up my favorite character. Stole the spotlight so many times and throughout act 2 I felt "okay, I know Serena has her powers now, but it would be nice to revive her somehow, because I miss her." And then I did. Though I was disappointed we didn't get to keep adult Veronica, because adult Veronica is beautiful. Felt like there should've been a sidequest to permanently restore her, rather than just the vision scene and Mighty Magic Burst (and of course in the game intro). Serena - huge sweetheart. One big tell is the party at Lonalulu where most of the party is partying (except Veronica who is trying to get in), and Serena is out on the beach healing a huge line of injured people. I liked how she has such a huge crush (if not love) for the hero - so much so that the others acknowledge it at the beginning of act 3. I reloaded saves to try out marriage with her, Veronica, Jade, and Gemma and decided she was the one. Her scenes there just felt right. Despite Gemma making the hero re-recite her marriage vows, Serena's scenes felt more like a wife lol. Interesting - if you do the marriage practice at Briscolleti's mansion, Serena is SO excited the luminary picks her. (Jade and Veronica both give excuses but you can tell they like him too - just not as much as Serena does). Though given the absolute ending, my head canon is if you pick one of the twins, you basically get both of them. Plot thoughts: - Seeing Calasmos to start the game was great in hindsight. We see these spirits everywhere, some of them are "tockles", so I assumed he was just another tockle or one that was glowing because impending doom was coming. Later we learn about Mordegon and in the second act, I figured he was a tockle trying to help by bringing "Erdwin's Latern" down, though he didn't seem to care what would happen to Gallopolis. - Jade never once returned to Heliodor after the destruction of Dundrasil, electing to stay with - and essentially being raised by - Rab. Drustan makes a good point, if not for the fall of Dundrasil and the coming of the Dark One, she and the hero probably would've already been married. - Mordegon clearly read the Dark Overlord list. He stabs Erdwin in the back right as he and Calasmos are mutually exhausted after their fight. Yeas later, he immediately tries to take out the new hero as soon as he's born, not only sending his troops all at once, but personally taking the front line to take the hero out. He then possesses the strongest king and keeps the country running so no one would suspect him, though as that king, wielding the strongest human army just in case. Then spreading a rumor that the hero was the "Darkspawn". Just in case. Then when finding the hero, knowing he needs the sword of light, lets the hero get pretty far in his quest, only to ambush him at Yggdrasil right when he's unsealing the heart of Yggdrasil and claiming the sword of light. Veronica saves the heroes (at the cost of her own life), but then he attacks Cobblestone - just in case the hero survived and tries to get there. Has Alizarin attack the mermaids and control the seas. Waits until Calasmos appears and summons Erdwin's Latern to take him out. After 97:44 I finally defeated Mordegon and saw the ending credits. Then decided I'd push on - because I knew there was "post game content" and I thought maybe there'd be a small chance I could revive Veronica somehow. Only to discover Mordegon was the typical Dragon Quest midboss (tm) all along and the real villain would emerge. Calasmos was intimidating but was a more traditional "Orcus in his castle" DQ villain. - Speaking of which, why didn't the hero immediately out Mordegon when he goes back in time? He clearly had to know the king was possessed, but lets Mordegon get dangerously close to the sword repeatedly. In the end, it was Calasmos who blocked Mordegon from getting the Sword of Light. Though - did Calasmos go back in time with the hero? Mordegon seems to imply that as he vanishes, and Calasmos notes that he was defeated in a different time. Maybe he's just time sensitive? - After Calasmos goes down, we learn the truth, that this is the prequel to DQ3. So many questions: -- In the Tockle quests we assume we're going back in time. Looks like instead we were going forward? Very interesting. Wonder what would've happened if, in Ortega's house, Serena or someone would've checked the bookcase and had seen the book with their completed quest already written. -- What happened to the first timeline when the hero goes back in time? My thinking is the world reverted but fragments of that time still remain, leading to everyone having deja-vu. But then the world doesn't revert when Serenica goes back in time. Though in her case, the sword didn't break. -- Why has the geography changed so radically by the time of DQ3? I'm guessing Hotto becomes Jipang (and later on the Hotto set in DQ Builders 2 makes sense) and Angri-La becomes All Trades Abbey but it would be interesting to see the rise and fall of the other nations heading up to DQ3. -- Where is Rubiss? (Saw a nice theory that says she was probably the puff puff girl at the Battlegrounds) -- I heard Zoma's ... wife ... shows up somewhere? I missed that. -- I guess the Yggdrasil in DQ2 is a more matured seedling and the heart of Yggdrasil becomes the Sphere of Light? -- What happens to the Watchers in DQ3? [link] [comments]

DQXI (Switch) Act 2/3 Treasure questions Posted: 16 Nov 2019 08:16 AM PST I'm considering eventually repeating Act 2 and Act 3 for an additional duping session, but I want to know if I'd get multiples of any unsellable items in the process. It would annoy my OCD if I got 2 of a costume armor that only 1 person can equip, for example, so I've got a couple questions relating to that. No story or mob name spoilers, please (item names are okay). First, I've been told that chests reset when you start Act 3. Are the chests that reset the same list of chests that reset when you change from 3D to 2D mode (IE, everything minus a few exceptions like weapons that are used in crafting)? Second, does anyone happen to have a list of non-Tickington items that are unsellable? Finally, let's say you complete everything in Act 2 and Act 3, then use 2D mode to do them over again. Discounting stuff from treasure chests, will you get a 2nd copy of any unsellable items as rewards on the second way through that part of the game (either from story events or from optional bosses)? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

For those avoiding using Saint's Ascension/Saint's Song (DQXI): Posted: 15 Nov 2019 05:51 PM PST While working on the all pep powers accolade, I found the Saint's Ascension effect remains active even after battle/after moving Serena to the backline. I've seen talk of it here an elsewhere about Saint's Ascension being generally impractical or useless (which is correct in late game when you get stuff like Omniheal and Kerplunk), but considering how early she can use it (literally as soon as you get the last Act 1 party members), its actually a very easy way to prep for any major bosses that could wipe your team (thus giving you a second chance/the edge needed to finish off a boss you may be underleveled compared to). So far I actually haven't found a turn limit on how long it stays ready, either (I've burned about a hundred turns spamming defend to pep up my characters between pep power uses and it still hasn't expired on her), so I presume it's active until she uses Saint's Song. Also of note: I'm playing XIS, so keep in mind this may have been a change only for the Switch version. Spell comparison below (spoiler tags on late-game spell effects, just in case): Omniheal: Heals all allies to full HP, including those on the backline. Does not heal status effects. MP cost: 64 Kerplunk: User expends all MP and dies but revives all allies (front and back lines) to full HP. No effect on allies still alive MP Cost: ALL(minimum of 32) Saint's Song: Heals all allies (roughly midheal effect), heals all status ailments, revives all allies (effectively Kazing if it could target everyone at once). All effects include backline allies. MP cost: 0 (requires Saint's Ascension pep power before it can be used, but remains ready until it gets used) Again, since this can be prepared by using the pep power versus weak enemies before heading to a boss (and will remain ready until you need it), its a great early game equivalent to the late game spells - and doesn't carry the heavy MP cost of the late game spells. As such, I recommend it for anyone struggling while taking on No Armor and/or Stronger Monsters challenges (though it's certainly not required to complete the challenges). It's certainly not spammable, but might be just the edge you need to avoid hurling a controller across the room if the RNG hates you in a critical battle. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Nov 2019 05:36 PM PST I just finished act 2 and saw the credits roll by. I thought, ok this will be a chance to clear my side quests and maybe finish tickington stuff. NOPE. I saw the next part and thought it was a rehashed version of act 2 and realized... it's a whole other part. [link] [comments]
Where can I watch "Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai"? Posted: 15 Nov 2019 06:21 PM PST I'm a big fan of "Beet: The Vandal Buster", which the creator of TAD, Riku Sanjo, also made, so I imagine I'd enjoy this quite a lot. Unlike with the first Dragon Quest anime with Abel, I can't seem to find very many episodes on Youtube. Any idea where I could watch this? [link] [comments]

**POST GAME SPOILER** DQ11 - Quick Question Posted: 15 Nov 2019 02:24 PM PST I have a quick question regarding treasure chests etc. I just traveled back in time and saw that all chests are closed again, even though my menu has all the weapons and stuff as it was before the time travel. 1 - Do I have to collect the treasures again? or will they be in an opened stage when I (at least i think this will happen) get my levels back for my other characters 2 - are all the treasure chests reward essentially doubled now that I kept the rewards, but the chests are unopened again? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
