Dragon Quest XI has reminded me of why I used to love turn based RPGs. Posted: 22 Jun 2020 02:58 PM PDT This is something I never thought I'd ever be posting again: I'm absolutely in love with a JRPG. To give some back story, I used to be a huge RPG nut back in the day, Ultima, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior etc. Loved and played all of them. The 16 bit generation rolled around, which was probably the pinnacle of that genre, and I played the hell out of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI etc. Then the PS1 era rolled around, and I started having issues. Plots became stale. Spectacle replaced coherent story (lookin' at you FFVII), and tropes began replacing genuine characters. At the same time, Elder Scrolls and other action RPGs began to appear and were way more engaging than yet another amnesiac, silent, dragon-boy-descendant and his naive and improbably well endowed female friend an Co. fighting a troup of nefarious circus people with superpowers. The TB combat became incredibly slow and tedious, the games became a slog (outside a few exceptions like Xenogears, Skies of Arcadia)... and I eventually stopped caring, moved on to Fallout and Witcher and Skyrim, and never looked back. Every once in a while I'd try a used or on sale JRPG and always, always hated it and found it tedious. Not my thing anymore, right? So covid hits, I play through all my stuff and am so burned out of what I normally play, that I just need something new. A couple of the guys I know at the local game store swear that this Dragon Quest XI game is amazing and that I should try it. Well, the hell with it I say. There's nothing else out I want to play, and it's certainly LONG, so once more unto the breach. I figured I'd just trade it back in when I inevitably hated it. 25 hours later in one weekend, I not only don't hate it, I absolutely LOVE it. Game of the Year love it. On paper, it sounds like what I hate: silent protagonist, huge game, tons of turn based battles, typical fantasy kingdom/dark lord stuff... and yet it's not any of that. The battles are turn based, but they're fast, and surprisingly tactical once you get into the game. Very fast. And I remember all the enemies from the NES games. I never get bored with them. The characters are all things we've all seen before: noble hero, loud mouthed rogue, gentle healer, the flamboyant gay guy, trash talking wizard etc. And yet every one of them feels like a genuine person, a real character whose motivations I care about and whose story I genuinely WANT to see. The world isn't just big and full of random encounters, it feels like a genuine well thought out (and gorgeous) setting. The whole thing feels like a good fantasy novel. Most importantly, XI has whatever the old magic used to be for me: it sucked me into a world and cast of characters I genuinely care about, and didn't bog it down with silly, convoluted combat systems and boring exposition that took ages to resolve. I'd forgotten. This is how FFVI and Chrono Trigger made me feel. What an amazing game this is. I'd forgotten how much I love games like this. Shame there are not more of them. Also quick question. Are the other games in the series this good? I haven't touched one since the NES days. [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Jun 2020 07:29 AM PDT Somehow defeated the snærfelt dragon after the 10th try with my under level 60 team when guides on internet say you need level 70+ No paralysis/fall down during Erik combo\ Hendrik forbearance surviving with 28 hp\ Hendrik only dying once and the dragon didn't insta-kill anyone that round, allowing me to revive and use forbearance instantly\ No miss on Erik combo and had a few crits(landed 3 times one game but the dragon dodged half my victimiser) and did just a little over 7000 hp the dragon had before it kill jade my last alive member when I decided to not heal [link] [comments]
Posted: 23 Jun 2020 03:39 AM PDT So far so good! I've played and beaten VII, VIII and XI. I've had this one for a bit but just started it last night. I'm at the part where I need to open the path to the first town, and am running around grinding at the moment. Allocation points just opened up for me. Anyway, I was wondering if there was anything I should know about the game to optimize my experience that y'all might let me know. Also, what should I start dumping my allocation points into? I put the first three into Swordsman. Thanks! [link] [comments]

DQ11: Swords Vs. Greatswords for the Hero Posted: 23 Jun 2020 12:29 AM PDT I was just curious to what the best choice for the main character is. I'm in post game at the moment and was wondering what's more worth it in the end Edit: I should add that I'm also playing with all 8 Draconian Quest Settings [link] [comments]

Doing a Dragon Warrior Monsters challenge run.(Beast's only) Posted: 23 Jun 2020 12:41 AM PDT So, I'm not sure if anyone else still plays this 20 year old game but it's something I come back to year after year, however I kinda have it down pat, so I thought about a challenge run. Nothing big to start with since I tend to not do challenge runs, but I've honestly had a lot of fun doing it. It's only using beast monsters. This doesn't mean you can't befriend other types but you can only use beasts in your team. It starts when you get anteater, so your gonna be stuck with one monster for a while. But then I got a gremlin(not used at all, just to open the travelers gate to madknight). Then got a fairyrat, then madcat then two grizzlys (one from a foreign trainer and one breeding anteater with an Iceman). It's gotten a lot easier now that I got 3 monsters which makes me wonder how a single monster run would work. I'm gonna keep updating this just to kinda keep me motivated to do it. I don't think anyone is gonna see this but if you do I'd recommend grabbing this game and it's sequel also on gbc. [link] [comments] |
