Dragon Quest XI: Character Book (Spoilers Inside)

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:47 PM PST

    Difficulty?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:06 AM PST

Hello ! I have just started the game yesterday.

Dragon Quest XI S is my first dragon quest so I have put my game in normal. I have read that it's an easy game... how easy? Is there still some challenging fights? I like challenge and strategy and I also like to battle a lot to level up my characters... I'm a bit scared to become too over powered with time?

Can I change the difficulty? I couldn't find this option... I play on Switch.

Dragon Quest Boss Bracket Elite Eight

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:40 PM PST

The last boss bracket got a lot more responses than expected and the races were runaways and I figured that it would be pretty difficult for any of the bosses to stage a comeback. The matchups for the Elite Eight are ready.

Or are there no quick and easy equipment stat wikis? I keep trying to Google weapon names to check base and +1 etc. stats for equipment and come up with incomplete pages or no results at all. What's with these shenanigans?

Could Psaro be the ancestor of the Hero of DQ5?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:24 PM PST

(Note: I'm not the one who came up with this idea first, I saw this on gamefaqs, but I would like to advocate for the possibility nonetheless)

Could it be possible that the Hero of DQ5 (whom I'll refer to as Madason from here on, since that's his "canon" name) is the descendant of Psaro the Manslayer, through his mother, Madalena? If you go through with the bonus ending of DQ4, you'll see that Psaro gets brought back from his Secret of Evolution transformation thanks to the revival of Rose, and he teams up with the protagonists to take down the true evil, Aamon. Afterwards, Psaro and Rose go to Rosehill, where they presumably lived long-term. In DQ5, Madason is the son of Pankraz and Madalena. Madalena comes from Lofty Peak, the people of whom possess demon-like magic but are benevolent in nature (or at least they did at some point in the past; it seems that in more recent times, the powers started fading out and Madalena is the only one in the present who possessed these powers). The elders of Lofty Peak use their powers to prevent the evil forces of Nadiria from penetrating the barriers leading to the mortal world. Madalena is kidnapped by the Order of Zugzwang (the followers of Grandmaster Nimzo) since her powers can work in the reverse as well and allow Grandmaster Nimzo to gain access to the mortal realm. Madason's inherited powers from his mother is most clearly shown by his ability to recruit certain monsters, a skill that is very telling of his potential connection to Psaro, which I'll get to in a sec.

If you played DQ5, you'll know that enough time has passed since DQ4 that the descendants of the Hero in DQ4 would have populated the world had they not been wiped out by the Order of Zuzgwang (and one of the three surviving descendants would marry Madason). But what if the same thing happened to Psaro? After defeating Aamon, Psaro and Rose could have had children of their own, and the progeny of Psaro would likely inherit his demon powers as well. It's very possible that these powers Psaro passed on to his offspring are the same ones that the folks of Lofty Peak have as well (only unlike Psaro up until Chapter 6, they use their powers for good rather than evil). I would also take another leap and say that it's very possible that Roseville eventually became Lofty Peak. They are roughly in the same location in the overworld map, and if Psaro really did have descendants, they could have populated Roseville (which came to be known as Lofty Peak over time) and resulted in the town being populated by people who wield demon magic. And while neither Psaro nor Rose were human, they were both humanoid, which could mean that their species could cross-breed with humans the same way that Zenithians can, and their descendants could have started to primarily cross-breed with humans (the animosity that Psaro held towards humans having died out by then) so that by the time of DQ5, the descendants of Psaro are practically all-human, with any traces of demon/elf blood being very miniscule and lost over time. Also, look at Madason's ability to tame certain monsters. Doesn't that seem rather similar to the loyalties that Psaro exerts on his demonic followers? Another thing to note is that one of Madason's titles throughout DQ5 is "Monster Master", which sounds very similar (if not practically identical) to Psaro's title, which is "Master of Monsters". So to sum it all up, Parry and Madchen (the twins of Madason and his wife) inherited their Zenithian powers from their mother and their affinity with monsters from their father, who got it from his mother.

Now with all that being said, there are also some strikethroughs for this theory. The first is that all this is completely reliant on the Chapter 6 ending of DQ4 being the "canon" one, since in the original ending, Psaro never gets redeemed, and he and Rose are both dead in the end (and there's absolutely no indication that the two had any kids beforehand). And DQ5 was released long before the bonus ending of DQ4 ever existed (although on the other hand, the intention for the two and DQ6 to be connected as a trilogy wasn't there for the original versions anyways). Personally, I am usually inclined to say that neither of the two endings for DQ4 are canon over the other, since in DQ5, the heroes are primarily remembered for vanquishing Estark rather than Psaro/Aamon, which makes it so that either of the two endings could have happened in canon. The second is that I feel like if this theory is true, then the writers would make it more evident. Even though they do not make the connections between the three Zenithian games very strong in general (most certainly not as strong as the Erdrick trilogy), they still give enough hints and evidence for the players to conclude with 100% certainty that Bianca/Nera/Deborah are direct descendants of Solo/Sofia. The connection between Madason/Madalena and Psaro is not nearly as strong (still considering that this is 100% speculation) so unless this starts to become a more evident element in future releases of the Zenithian trilogy, we cannot say for certain that this theory is true (but of course, nothing that stops speculation).

Edit: One more potential evidence of Madadon's connection to Psaro, which isn't nearly as strong as the others but I still feel like could be worth mentioning. As stated before, the connections between the three Zenithian trilogy games were primarily present in the remakes, due to it stemming from fan service. In the original DQ6, the PC could recruit monsters almost the same way that Madason can. However, in the DS remake, this was changed so that the only monsters that could be recruited were slime monsters (plus Hacksaurus) via part of some subplot (pretty much like Ragnar recruiting Healie). In other words, the DQ6 Hero's association with monsters was nothing like Madason's, which stemmed from inheriting demon-like magic from the residents of Lofty Peak. It's possible that this change was implemented so that Madason's ability to recruit monsters could be seen as more "special". Since the DQ6 protagonist no longer could recruit monsters under the same circumstances (again, only from subplots and most of his recruitable slime monsters never being evil in nature to begin with), this could solidify the theory that Madason's abilities are primarily stemming from Psaro's, which the writers could have decided to do after deciding to connect the three Zenithian trilogy games.

[Spoilers] I just finished the tournament arc, and I have one question

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:10 AM PST

    What the fuck ?

Why is everyone acting like it's not a big deal ? A guy was feeding innocents to some sort of demonic (?) creature for his own gain (albeit with some altruistic intentions) for them to be magically devoured from the inside and their essence to be distilled into a liquid form, and yet it's barely even brought up.

They're like "oh well, people did worse for less !" and that's it. It's not clear how long this went on, but it's pretty safe to assume from what info we are given that it happened over years. Meaning that probably dozens, if not hundred of people died this way.

And yet the game acts like we're supposed to fell sorry for the guy or something, as this now downtrodden hero.

Man, I do enjoy this game but the writing really baffles me sometimes.

Metal Slime or Blue when it comes to Figure

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:20 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I am going to be purchasing a Luminary Action Figure, and I saw there were two versions. One comes with a metal Slime, and when regular/blue. I can only get one, which one do you recommend?

I like the regular and I like the metal one, but I guess in a case of rarity which one would be wiser to pick?

    Thank you!

Did they nerf the difficulty/leveling requirements in dq11 de?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:28 PM PST

I swear I played the pc version, and ran around killing tons on the way to heliodor just to be a tad tougher than the enemies, and playing on Xbox I'm blowing through enemies without even training. I also remember spending a few hours in the church area when you first get Erik in the party.
