Being inspired a bit by Smash Ultimate, I literally named my character "Hero" in my new DQIX save. And it fits so nicely! Funny that naming my character "Hero" in any other RPG franchise wouldn't pull it off nearly as well.

Dragon Quest XI Character Progression Help.

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 09:39 AM PST

Hello. Dragon Quest XI is my first Dragon Quest game. Attempted to the play the Dragon Quest 1-10 but ended up watching/reading about those games.

I've been grinding Metal Slimes on that island, but their rarity, not to mention their habit of running away whenever Jade doesn't land Lightning Thrust, is kind of annoying. It's extra annoying when those deformed metal slimes run away considering the extra effort to summon them.

Anyways, I am 40+ hours into the game (just left Nautica) and my characters are LV 30-32. Tried watching videos to help me build my character but I can't wrap my head around them. The easiest route I've found watching those videos is farming Pep Pips/Pops (so I can abuse Electro Light) but I have no idea when or how I will get to that point.

Anyone have any tips in terms of where I'm at right now? It would really be a big help.

Other NA Released Dragon Quest Media (Novels, Manga, Anime)

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 06:35 AM PST

I'm interested in compiling a list of all official North American released Dragon Quest media. So, not too interested in fan translations and that sort of thing. However, information outside the games is a bit hard to find. So far, I've identified the following:

Dragon Quest Monsters+ Volumes 1-5 Manga

Dragon Warrior Episodes 1-13 Anime (i.e. Legend of the Hero Abel)

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai Anime - via Crunchyroll and Hulu

Dragon Quest: Your Story Anime - via Netflix

And that's all I've got. Is that really all there is? Any manga or anime I'm missing? Any novels that received an official English translation? Has Legend of the Hero Abel ever been made officially available to watch outside of its original 13 episode dubbed broadcast?

I always liked the song that played in your home base (or something like that) so I made it while DQ Tact was updating. I actually had a lot of fun mashing up the different versions of it because I get to keep hearing my favorite part.

My take on Dragon Quest XI (Spoilers)

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 01:38 PM PST

I recently finished DQXI and I got some thoughts of it. The only other DQ game I ever played was DQVIII.

    Gameplay

The game probably has the best turn based combat I ever played to this day. That being said, as nice as it is the problem I always had with turn based combat is that in the end it typically comes down to whst level someone is playing the game. There'll never be a level 1 run on a turn based game, simply because in the end its not the skill that matters, at least as long as you don't fight enemies underleveled. You can use dragovian quests to amplify the difficulty whicj definitely was a good move. I only wish I used them on my first play through. I love the roaming around outside the battle and the casinos made the gameplay more diverse on occasion although I'd love for the next game to have more mini games and gameplay change ups (like when you were able to control munchie in DQVIII). It took me about 102h to finish it which was pretty long to be honest and the length made me lose interest in between game sessions but for people who like to go on a huge journey I could definitely see the appeal. I have to hand it to the devs for including the option to play the entire game in 2d as well. The fact they went through so much efforts seems nuts to me.

    Sound

The music was great. It was beautifully composed and the instruments were well chosen. What made the music stick out negatively though was how often the same track was used over and over. The outworld roaming theme as well as the normale battle really got annoying fast. For a 100h+ game it almost seems like bad game design to not have more variety in music themes here. I say variety, because the game actually has a fair amount of soundtracks! Lots of them unfortunately sound exactly the same. For instance, why not give Gallapolis a kick-ass mariachi theme? Something Nutcracker inspired for Sniflheim and something like "Nightmare on Bald Mountain" for the Fortress of Fear? They did something amazing though for including both, the option to change between DQXI's and DQVIII's theme as well as between the orchestrated versions and the bit versions of the soundtrack

The voice acting was top notch and the option to change between English and Japanese is always very appreciated.

    Story

The story was ok I guess. At first it was absolutely overwhelming and cliché-y to me. What turned me off right from the get go is how afraid the devs seemed to be to try something new at this point. The first 40 hours of gameplay played out exactly the same. Go to a town -> help some guys by doing a dungeon + boss -> get an ally -> go to another town -> help some more people by beating dungeons + a boss -> get an ally -> repeat for 20 hours, get a boat, continue another 20 hours until later you unlock flying. It continued being a stereotypical jrpg until the end but they did try something new with Act 2 which I was very happy for.

When Ygdrassil fell and our group got separated it was nice to have a change of pace and story telling at first, but it got really clear really soon that act 2 was basically a darker, different approach of Act 1's story telling. Basically we went through every major city again with a different character and went on an ally hunt yet again which was killing any tension for me, simply because I could foresee how I'd spent the next hours of gameplay. The story overall was quite foreseeable, though I will say some characters chapters were actually pretty engaging, more about that when I talk about the characters though. Eventually we got our group again and then they actually did something really amazing. They killed off Veronica for the plot. I didn't believe she was gone until I actually reached the end of the Act. I couldn't believe they actually had the balls to kill a main character, I'm really impressed by that change of devotion for the plot and I definitely didn't see that coming.

I was about 60 hours in at that point and really burned out from the monotony presented up to this point. The fact that the story ended here a good move, because it gave an out for people who didn't want to invest anymore time with the game, but does give the opportunity to let other people who are thoroughly enjoying the game experience more of it. Which ending is canon is depended on who plays it I believe. I don't think there is 1 actual Canon ending to the story and I hope they keep it that way. Despite all my bickering before I actually wanted to continue after what has happened to Veronica because I was curious if the plot actually does get better and better. In all honesty this is were the game actually got very interesting to me. The fact that we actually know how the future would plan out and got to avoid a whole lot of accidents and victims was entertaining and playing the game "overleveled" mixed with a new overworld theme and my companions noticing me being more mature all of a sudden helped conveying the idea of me being able to change the world for the better this time. It was a nice touch having to use the corrupted sword of light and learning so much more lore about the dark tockle, islands in the sky and the main cast.

The side quests were pretty mediocre, but what I really liked is how the entire world starts to acknowledge you as the luminary of legend as the game finishes.

    Graphics

I really don't think I need to say much about it honestly. It looks absolutely mindblowing. This is a game from 3 years ago I think. It totally holds up and the detail in the world and choices of colour and lighting put other games to shame. I might have never ever seen a jrpg more visually pleasant .

    Characters

I liked the MC. He was a cool looking character and even though he didn't express much emotion I can acknowledge that this is something japanese people like to do, to make the MC more relatable in their heads. A blank canvas, just like the old pokemon games. Perfectly acceptable.

Eric was my favorite ally, his design was awesome and reminiscent to old dragonball characters like Vegito. His character was interesting and understanding how he became a thief actually make sense, seeing how he grew up. The fact that he gave us the Red orb so we could reach Ygdrassil in Act 1 had a whole new meaning, seeing why he wanted it in the first place. I do wish his amnesia would have stuck though. It was a totally pointless plot device and a missed opportunity to give his sacrifice and act 3 for that matter a whole new depht to it.

Serenas character developement in Act 2 was very interesting. Seeing her maturing over the death of her sister matched her character well and was a very good decision, because up until that point in game, she was painfully bland and unnoticeable compared to the rest of the cast. I do prefer her long haired look, but I really like the powerhouse she became in the end. Some people seem to dislike how that was just undone by Act 3, but if the game uses multiverse theory, it didn't take away any of her progression, quite the opposite if so.

Veronica was the same for me. I never found her to be special. She seemed like a gimmicky character to me. Almost like a mascot because of her hight issue. The fact that she passed away so young did make her character interesting and lovable all of a sudden(Much like Xion in KH2), because it reminded the player of how precious things are, and that we should enjoy them while we can.

Rab was pretty well made. He definitely seemed like the perfect fusion between old magical king, sweet family member and perverted master roshi. His accent gave a certain uniqueness to him and he overall became one of the characters I really cared for in the end. His sub story with master pang was awesome and funny and I loved to have him in my party throughout the game.

They really made a point to portrait Jade as the badass older sister character and they ran with it. They don't fail to make her look like an Android 18 kind of woman, who isn't necessarily cruel but definitely kicks some booty if she feels like it. But speaking of booty.. her Act 2 sub story was awful, just awful. They took this awesome female martial artist and turned her into an obedient sex object and it was simply unnecessary for the plot overall. Definitely just the purest form of fan service right there. They couldn't help but turn her into a "maid"-en in distress in need of rescue and the way they went about was part of what made me like act 3 more.

I wasn't a Silvando fan throughout anytime in the game. Not that I don't like flamboyant characters per se, I do like Majima from the Yakuza series. The difference between them is Majima isn't flamboyant just for the heck of it. He has a complicated psyche and much more serious moments to amplify and explain his over the top-ness. Granted, comparing DQ to Yakuza is unfair but that brings me to his substory with his father. His father just from the get go supported Sylvando which seems like lost potential no matter how you spin it. If he is a genuinely nice supporting father, why would Slyvando run away? Would a nice father not at least wonder about why his son left and maybe start crying? Even if not, why would Slyvando run away from home then? If he was a strict father who happened to have a change of heart, they didn't show it very well. We could have had a scene like where Hendrick clutches his fist on his horse, because he was too proud and not good with words to apologize to the MC. We could have had a scene where he started crying when he was alone in the room, anything to fill the gap. My next problem with it is Slyvandos motive. Jade is tough and mature because she lost her loved ones at a young age and got left with essentially nothing. Rab lost his entire family and kingdom, which is why he took care of Jade, as if she was his own daughter. Hendrik was so strong and thickheaded because he grew up with nothing and the military was giving him and his brother a sense of purpose. And Sylvando want to make everyone smile because.... what exactly? Why does he want to make the world a place where everyone smiles? Was he not alowed to smile as a child because of his fathers strictness? Did he cry a lot because he lost his mother at a young age? There was a lot of potential to give him some depht and its a shame they didn't use any of it.

Hendrik is probably the character that developed the most as the plot transpired. I never would have guessed to meet him as a party member, but I'm glad they did what they did with him. He was a well written character who had convincing motives, great developement, an awesome design and a great comeback in Act 2. I feel like his change to our side in Act 3 felt rushed, but given the circumstances I can at least logically understand his decision.

All in all the game really got me hooked, that though only after act 2. It absolutely deserves all the praise it gets and it still totally holds up so many years later. It's a pretty lighthearted fun game, nothing too serious and 70h in it kind of felt like a One Piece/Dragon Ball kind of game to me, in a good way. I can't wait for the next game to come out, because I usually only see myself criticizing something as much as here, when a game means something to me. Can definitely recommend if someone has about 100h of free time ahead and doesn't need too much depht and a serious, dark story.

Is the Super Famicom version of VI really that much different from the DS one?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2021 12:57 PM PST

I've always heard throughout the internet how much better the original Super Famicom version of VI is when compared to the DS iteration. Is it really? If so, then why?

I'll be honest that DS VI is my least favourite game in the series, and I've played all of the mainline ones bar X. I've always thought of giving it another shot, but in Spanish (I'm Brazilian but I play games in Spanish in order to improve my knowledge of the language. I'm torn between playing the DS version again, but in Spanish, or resorting to the fan translation of SuFami VI - which would have to be in English as I'd have no other choice, since I can't read Japanese.

What say you? Is it really *that* much different?

(Also, is the fan-translated script good?)
