Found a high-res picture of an old Nintendo Power's Dragon Quest III poster. And it's got the same aspect ratio of the new Samsung smartphone screens (19.5:9). Fits perfectly!

    First time DQ player here!

    Posted: 28 Dec 2019 09:19 AM PST

I'm admittedly a bit of a JRPG fan so I wanted a new game to play on my Switch to wail away the holidays. I decided to pick up DQXI after seeing it on plenty of Switch top 10 lists after initially not being too interested after playing the demo (granted I didn't realize the demo would be take you all the way to the Door of Departure).

I've been having a complete blast with the game so far (just reached Zwaardsrust/Octagonia), and the game is so funny and charming and gives me a lot of nostalgia towards games like Golden Sun for the GBA. Any tips for a new player like me to make the most out of my experience?

What content was cut for the Switch version of Dragon Quest III compared to the SNES remake?

I heard the monster battle animations were omitted as well as the pachisi boards. Is there anything else I'm forgetting?

Dragon Quest is Great (an anecdote and some nostalgia)

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:56 PM PST

When I was a kid, maybe 9 or 10, I borrowed Dragon Warrior III from a neighbour kid who was a few years older than I was. When he let me borrow it, he wiped the saved game in the third slot and told me that it was my slot. Looking back on it, I'm sure it was his way of telling me not to mess with the other games. I took it to heart, though, and the third slot was mine! Since then, every time I play a game with save slots, I always choose the third one.

Dragon Warrior III was my first RPG. I loved it. I still play it on an emulator. Growing up, I played and beat I, III, and IV. I loved DQ Monsters 1 and 2 on the GBC, too. When VII came out on the PS1, I played it. It took about 110 hours, but I beat it. That was a long game. There was also a pretty terrible spin-off game where you played a chubby merchant.
I shouldn't say terrible. It was fun, but completely different from what I had expected. Earlier this year, I picked up XI S and just finished it last week.

I decided to pick up DQ1 on the Switch and I'm surprised by how much of it I remember. I beat it in an afternoon. I have to say that I love how much less grindy the updated version is. On top of that, the quick save feature really makes it much more playable (nothing worse than the Snooze spell wiping you out with no recourse). My only complaint is the Golem fight. Playing the flute seems to take forever, then he has the chance to immediately wake up. The fight requires no healing, but took me a lot longer than I care to admit.

Once I beat DQ1 again, I decided to pick up DQ2 and DQ3 on the Switch. I'll probably jump right in to DQ2 tonight. I've never played it, so I'm looking forward to that nostalgic goodness. I don't know if it will be as great as 1 or 3 for me, since I never played the original, but I'm sure it'll be worth it.

I'm glad I picked up XI S. It was a fantastic game. It's great coming back to a series after so long (I actually didn't even know there were games beyond DQ8 until I saw it). I'm really hoping more of the games get a Switch port. I'd love to pick them up.

It's also fantastic that the DQ community is thriving. This subreddit is great, super helpful, and the pictures of people with slimes makes me happy.

DQ Builders 2 Question: how to bring monsters with you?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:04 PM PST

I'm in Post game, on Unholy Holm, trying to beat the Dread Dragon. I've gotten every other secret boss monster solo, but it takes FOREVER.

I had no idea you can bring people with you to explorer island! I just assumed that you're on your own. The way I've beaten bosses solo is bringing blocks, stacking them 4-5 blocks high (depending on how tall bosses are), looking down with L2 and waling at them with the Attack Button (triangle) over and over.

I have Poison Needle, I stopped using it after Moonbrooke because the proc sucks. So, how do I recruit monsters to explore with me? I'd like to bring a golem or chimera.

Just picked up DQ11 for switch, it’s my first DQ game and I have to say I’m impressed.

Which skill paths do I take for maximum damage output in DQ11? [Spoiler]

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:07 PM PST

I know swords are only tangentially stronger than greatswords lategame when Luminary's got stuff like the supreme sword of light and Gigagash, but what about everybody else? I want to really beef out the Arborian twins' magic but other than I'm looking for a real efficient, physically oriented monster decimating team.

Also, since Erik cannot use shields or any two-handed weapon, would it be better to go heavier on knives where he can use statuses and crippling sextuple power attacks, or swords which are just generally stronger and can be upgraded by up to 90 extra strength? (I know dually deadly's a pretty advanced skill but I imagine it isn't necessary to get every other sword power for that one)
