DQ11 newbie question -- auto battle to win?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 10:06 AM PDT

Hi all, DQ series newbie here with some questions. Never played a game in the series before and only played a few JRPS in my life to be honest. So far I'm generally enjoying it due to the world and characters but there's one thing that's bugging me. I'm 11 or 12 hours into the game and I think there have been a grand total of three battles TOTAL that I actively participated in since I activated auto battle early on. Tricky Devil, the Griffin duo, and the big fat goblin guy who stole Veronica's magic.

This is because early in the game I experimented with the "Tactics" auto battle feature and noticed that my characters could easily grind through regular enemies without any trouble (I just watch HP and heal occasionally) so I've seen no reason to turn it off. That leaves me with only boss battles to deal with, which are very few and far between.

    A few questions:

    1. Is there ANY reason to actively participate in normal enemy battles? At least in a game like Pokemon I had to pay attention to type advantage and make choices. In DQ11 I can't figure out any way to be more or less strategic in these types of battles so I figure why bother. Am I wrong? Do enemies have specific weaknesses to exploit? Is there any benefit to actively battling at all?
    2. How in the world am I supposed to plan out my characters skills, weapon upgrades etc when I so rarely even use them? I barely remember what any of my characters moves do between boss fights because auto battle is so effective. So when I get to the skill tree it feels difficult to make strategic choices or synergize with the rest of my character's build because I so rarely even participate in a battle. I end up just picking skills arbitrarily.

I guess I could turn off auto battle, but I'm not sure that would really help the second issue because enemies are so weak and straightforward that defeating them is just a matter of spamming attacks and healing when appropriate -- am I wrong?

I hope people take this post in the spirit it's intended, I'm not trying to trash the game, I find it a relaxing way to unwind before bed, but mostly due to the art and characters. I just can't figure out why the battle system was designed in a way that makes it feel well... kind of pointless? What am I missing?

    DQ11 Post Game Question

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 09:47 AM PDT

Alright so Mordegon has been dealt with (at a very leisurely 80hrs lol) and now I'm sad because this game is amazing and it should never end. My question is am I wrong in assuming all that's left is simply grind my team up for one last final final boss oooor is there a bit more saviors story I've yet to taste?

    One of the last bosses

I recently fought Overweening Pride and for some reason after I ended my turn, Pride did 4 actions instead of his usual 2 (Normal Attack, Dark Lance, Guffaw, Fire Breath move). I'm not doing any Draconian challenges, and he was Pepped. Has anyone else experienced this or can help explain why this happened?

Sidequest not on my list? (DQXIS)

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 07:04 AM PDT

So I'm coming back to this game after beating it back in October. I'm trying to do all the sidequests so I looked up a guide and the very first one is in cobblestone. I haven't done it but when I go to the quest list it isn't there. Is it because I haven't rebuilt cobblestone yet? Please help I really want to 100% this game. I know it will be a challenge but I hope this quest isn't preventing me from that.

    Rarefied Orichalum just gone!

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 04:53 AM PDT

Steam Version of Dragon Quest 11 just for reference.

Hello everyone! So I'm having a huge problem right now. I just got done with the first trial and got the recipe for the supreme super SOL. I remember going back early (like right at the start of act 3 after getting guiding light) of grabbing the Orichalum. But apparently it didn't pick up as its not in my important items and when i go back there is no ore to be found!

Is this a bug? Cause if it is i don't have a save to fall back on and cant make the sword for the final boss. Pretty sure I am going to just put the game down.

    Kai and Kai plot hole

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:10 AM PDT

I just finished the Michelle quest where you tell her the truth but something is bothering me way more than it should.

Why the fuck does current day Kai look like is "grand father" since they're not blood related ?

The baby girl (Kai mother) is from the chief daughter and her husband. Old Kai and her where promised to each other but never married and the game does not implie that they did anything before.
