    Dragon Quest of the Stars

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:49 AM PST

Usually I don't endorse free to play mobile games but I downloaded this out of curiosity and I've actually had fun with it. There's is a lot of annoyances though like it loves to remind you about buying gems and tutorialize everything! But once I got past that I actually had fun exploring and battling monsters. I won't act like it's not a gatcha game but I have gotten a lot of gameplay out of it without spending any money.

    Got screwed over

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:08 AM PST

So I was doing the cactus cutlet side quest and while I was killing groups of those cactiballs and in two encounters a ran into metal slimes twice and actually killed them, but when I finally found the gold one it did that instant kill spell which killed Erik and the protagonist and I had that dragonic quest where if the player dies then it's game over, so I lost all that progress.

Dragonquest 1 remake with extra content.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 07:39 AM PST

I was recently playing dragonquest 1 and though there would be room for a sizable expansion to the game.

First off I know DQ 1 is great and I'm not trying to fix it par say this is just meant as a fun experement with more modern game design in mind. that said my ideas so far....

    3 playable characters.

    The hero: good balanced character.

    Princess Gwaelin: wizardy glass cannon.

Character 3 maybe some sort of pet a doggo or recruited monster: a strong physical attacker.

Naturally more equipment for the other characters.

Quality of life improvments: you only need to get the key once.

A few more bosses: one guarding erdrics tomb another guarding his sword. Maybe some more guarding important plot items.

make the existing ones a bit more unique: namely the knight guarding erdrics armor and the green dragon.

    A few sidequests.

Restore damdara. Mr. Mini metal will set up his shop here.

    A casino. Fancy item shop

    Mini metal support.

Naturally encounters will be rebalance for multiple characters.

A post game: the hero and princess travel to torland to found their kingdom but naturally it's a mess maybe we will even meet a young hargon.

    What do you think?

Have any ideas to add or expand upon?

If you had the chance to direct a mainline DQ game, what would the game be like?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 05:49 PM PST

I honestly think it's an interesting question to ask, if you could make a mainline DQ game: what it would be like!

Mine would probably be about 4 travelers from diferent backgrounds are reunited together in a kingdom and are asked to save the world from "The Root of all Evil" Basically, a twist of the Yggdrasil staple of the series, this time around the Yggdrasil is a evil tree summoned by the main antagonist that drains the energy of the world, rather than being the life of the world.

Those 4 people will work together since the beggining, but unlike other DQs games they don't know anything from eachother nor are befriended by the group/hero before joining, so they'll learn about each other together as the game progreses, leading to a lot of interesting situations at the begining of the game, like the party being sigly awkward or don't exactly agree on each other's directions, maybe some party members dislike each other who knows.

Gameplay-wise: The game will obviously be turn based, like DQVIII and XI each characters has a unique skill tree, this time around each character has 4 weapons to chose from and a "Unique" Skill Tree depending on the character's personality (think of Yangus Humanity), speaking of two new weapon types will be introduced: Flails and Katanas: Flails like Boomerangs can hit all enemies, but don't lose strenght...but it has a higher miss rate, Katanas like Greatswords are two handed, however they give they have a higher crit chance than most other weapons, can't think of much else right now haha.

(SPOILERS) The Luminary (DQ 11) and his powers in Act 2?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:12 AM PST

    Spoilers ahead for DQ 11.

I just started playing it on the Switch and this is my very first DQ game so please excuse me if I seem ignorant. I'm currently at the start of Act 2 where the Luminary recruits Rab back. However, he can learn and also use Quadraslash. He even has his mark back on his hand. How is this possible? I thought Mordegon ripped out his powers and crushed it into smithereens at Yggdrasil. I even saw his mark fade into thin air in the cinematic, and my Luminary skill tree is missing as a result. Is there something I'm missing?

    Dragon quest game recommendations

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 11:05 PM PST

I've played (am playing) Dqxi, and that's the only DQ game I've ever touched. I have a preference for story and graphics, though I will still play an older game with outdated graphics if it's good enough.

(Final fantasy I have a preference for the newer games like the viii remake and xv but I also have some of the older games-both a port to the ps4 and two copies of the ps2 version of ffx among others that are even older-and I still enjoy them, it's just harder for me to get through the older and further back the game and graphics and combat system get. Ffx is a good fit for graphics in an older game though.)

I definitely prefer a more..."3d" or open world type world even if it isn't actually an open world game. Can't remember any exact word for it at the moment. Ni no kuni and bravely default are both okay substitutes for that but the world inbetween locations for them is the kind that I would prefer be different in my games, and enjoy even less in older games.

And I'm willing to compromise on things if the game is good enough and I'm interested in playing it. But I'd prefer to know which ones fit those qualities more and which ones don't, so I know where to start. If I really enjoy a couple of games in the series that might leave me vying to play all the others even if they're not quite my type of game so it's really of matter of details on the games, and which ones have the best stories and which ones have the best of other features, so I can figure out which ones I most want to play first.

I'm also okay if there's any dq games that aren't the main series (like monster Hunter stories compared to monster hunter) but I'd still like there to be an actual story for it that isn't just "here's ten minutes of story and then you go run around and do stuff and that's it."

(Also sorry if some of this doesn't make as much sense as I'd like. I got four hours of sleep yesterday and five and then two-four hours today, and I also overheated and then was dehydrated earlier so I'm not exactly in the best of shape for making words fit together nicely. I've felt awful for a few days because my sleep schedule is so wack.)
