Learning to love Dragon Quest XI as a newcomer

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 07:17 AM PDT

I had never picked up a Dragon Quest game before DQ XI, and only bought the vanilla release on PS4 after reading glowing reviews. Blew through a couple of hours of gameplay, figured it'd never be for me, gave up on the idea of ever enjoying a Dragon Quest game.

Then, a friend explained how the DQ series is built on tradition, and that it's like a warm bowl of soup: comforting, familiar, and meant to be savored slowly.

With that mindset, I recently bought DQ XI Definitive Edition on Switch, as I was craving a game that I could take my time with, especially since my work and home life make it difficult to find the time for long, continuous play sessions. The quality-of-life enhancements sounded intriguing, the portability was a plus, and I had a gift card, so I'd lose nothing if I ended up hating it.

After roughly three hours into the game, I'm disappointed that I hadn't taken it slow the first time and gave it a fair shot.

On my PS4 playthrough, I kept trying to compare it to other games. This time, rather than actively look for things to like about the game, I accepted it for what it was and played at my own pace. I didn't try to blow through the story (even though the prologue pushes you to advance the plot), and I am enjoying combat and exploration so much more.

I grew up on PS1-era JRPGs, and the turn-based combat became so much more enjoyable when I changed the camera options. Additionally, I appreciate the lack of random encounters, and the townspeople in Heliodor are so charming. More to the point, the urgency in the plot is there at my behest, rather than constantly being forced to do one thing over the other.

Over the course of stop-start gaming over a few days, I've grown to love Dragon Quest XI, and I hope that other newcomers will heed the same advice I was given: take it slow, savor it, and appreciate the things that the game does well!

Lost my DQXI save due to having to reinstall Windows, but I really want to get into this series

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 09:46 AM PDT

I don't really feel like replaying DQXI because it's still pretty recent on my mind, so I would like to play the other games first and come back to DQXI with a fresh perspective. I'm a noob when it comes to JRPGS btw, DQXI was pretty much my first. I got like 30 hours into it, it was extremely easy because I made the mistake of not activating draconian quests, which took a lot of the fun out of the game for me because I didnt have any reason to strategize even when I was underleveled, because the game turned into "just use each character's strongest spell and maybe heal with selena and thats it", but I understand it was my mistake, and I actually liked the combat system, just wish it was harder.

What game are you suggesting I should play? DQIII grabbed my attention, is it fine to start with that without playing 1 and 2? Or should I play them first as well? Also, please recommend what version is the best(gbc, snes etc). Thanks!

I framed my oldschool DQ collection!

I’ve been collecting the passwords I missed and the in game menu says I’ve found all of them, but I’m missing two spots. Does anyone know what’s up with this?

    Dragon Quest III Permadeath Run?

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 08:14 AM PDT

So, I'm playing through DQ III for the very first time, and I immediately noticed the game's party system lended itself quite naturally to the idea of a Nuzlocke/permadeath run, especially since it would allow me to see tons of different Personalities and all of the classes.

...I've made it to Isis with 11 deaths. My issue is that, while I still like this idea, I'm wondering if I'm missing out by choosing to play like this on my first run. It isn't terribly hard to get everyone up to snuff again when I need to replace party members, barely any grind required, plus Defense is separate from Resilience in this and almost entirely gear-based, but I still can't decide if this is 'right'.

I want a weigh-in from y'all: Do you think I'm wasting my time playing like this?

The 'rules' of the run are fairly simple: - If anyone dies, barring the Hero, they stay dead, unless they are revived in battle or immediately following the battle, without moving. I drop their coffins off at Patty's and get new replacements.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 Missing starter weapon

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 02:15 AM PDT

I would've posted this in the heroes sub, but that place seems quite desolate, and Google doesn't seem to be helpful.

I'm working on the PS4 Platinum Trophy and am down to only needing to collect a few remaining Uber weapons. But I realized that the starting Heavy wand for the MC I didn't choose is completely unavailable and isn't in the Weapons Compendium. I have tried swapping the vocation back and forth to everything I can but the male Hero's Heavy Wand just doesnt show up. So i'm worried that the game glitched early on and since I didn't notice it.

Has anything like this happened to any of you? Do you know how to fix it? I would like to try to do a Flying Start, but I don't know if that would ever work...

    Approach to random encounters

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 10:55 PM PDT

So, recently I tried out my first Dragon Quest game, (xi) and something I absolutely needed to compliment was its approach to random encounters, coming from Pokémon I cannot stress how happy I was when I could go through a dungeon and not have to run into a zubats every 10 seconds.

it's such a shame that there's only 65 stages in Theatrhythm Dragon Quest. they could have done more stages, some of the best songs were totally skipped

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 01:47 PM PDT

i wont dream of it because it wont arrive, but it would be so cool if they made a sequel. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy has 70 stages and its sequel (Curtain Call) has 200+

How do I beat Tortured Soul

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 03:14 PM PDT

I just got to tortured soul again, and I keep dying to him. My whole party is level 11, and Jessica is kinda useless, I mostly just use her for medicinal herbs during the boss. The reinforcements have alot of health and almost every time I finally finish them off, he summons more. I had to do alot of grinding to just get from 9 to 11, and I'm having terrible luck with metal slimes. My strategy is to sap with Jessica and attack as much with Hero and Yangus, usually my plan falls apart when he summons reinforcements tho. I can't use tension since the walking corpse deletes it. Is there a better strategy or way to grind?

    Monsters/characters stronger than Nokturnus?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 02:42 PM PDT

According to the Dragon Quest wiki, Nokturnus is usually the strongest monster in games he appears in, with a few exceptions. What are these exceptions, exactly? I'm thinking either there are super bosses that are more difficult than Nokturnus, or in the Monsters series, monsters that are more difficult to synthesize/breed than Nokturnus (either because Nokturnus is a required recipe for some high-tier monsters, or a separate branch but still can be arguably more difficult).

I know that at least one example is the Zenith Dragon in DQMJ2, since Nokturnus is one of the required monsters to synthesize Zenith Dragon.

So apparently Slime minions exist, as a collaboration with the Despicable 3 movie back in 2017.
