    Quick question about DQVI Sage

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 03:58 AM PST

Hi heroes. I'm currently in the middle of playing VI and trying to decide on a build for Hero. I initially took him through Gladiator (and briefly through Paladin to pick up Thin Air) before making him a Hero. Now that I've maxed out that job, I'm thinking of making him a Sage for that sweet reduction in MP costs. Before I commit to this, though, just want to make sure--a maxed out Sage will reduce MP on any skill that uses MP, right? Even things like Gigaslash that aren't really a spell? Also, is the Mage's low physical attack too much of a drawback for this to be worth it? For what it's worth, I've pretty much exclusively been using Thin Air for physical attacks. Thanks!

Just Beat Dragon Quest VII (Beating the games in order for the first time)

Just Beat Dragon Quest VII (Beating the games in order for the first time)

I've been playing through the Dragon Quest Games in order since April of last year, and I beat I-III (on switch), IV-VI on DS, and now VII on 3ds. I've played a few Dragon Quest games before playing through them in order, but I'd never beaten a Dragon Quest Game, so this seemed like a great opportunity. After playing XI a few years ago and getting to Act 3, I decided to pick up all the DS ones, but I'm just now getting through playing them all.

Here are some Spoiler Free thoughts on the pros and cons of this amazing game (VII), in my opinion.

    Cons:

    • The obvious one is that this game is super long. Not only is it a long game, but it feels really repetitive in some cases. I climbed to the top of one tower dungeon about 6 times in my 60 hour + play through. In some cases, those climbs were right next to each other. Felt a bit padded and bloated, but I think most of that is just a consequence of this being an older game.
    • The main character is a completely blank slate, and the party members felt less fleshed out than in the recent games. Not knocking it that much, because you do find out a bit more about the protagonist as you go through the game, but it wasn't the same as IV, V, or even VI which felt like the protagonist had more clearly defined motivations.
    • No Random encounters is cool and all, but there were times where monsters took up the entire hallway and were basically unavoidable. I never really had to grind in this game though, so that's a plus. I just never ran from encounters and was never under-leveled. It did feel a bit grindy at times when I just wanted to get to the next point to advance the story.

    Pros:

    • Class system is absolutely amazing. I love the vocations, and it feels like they took everything from VI and turned it up to 11. It just feels so good to play with these vocations and level them up, and really made me feel like I had complete control over the kind of character I wanted. Super fun, and I can't wait to play through IX as I hear it takes this system and turns it up even further.
    • The story in this game is amazing. It felt like diving into a great television show, where every episode (fragment) was unique and fun. What I did not expect is how the story would layer itself so slowly over the course of 60 hours. It felt so random and disconnected, and then little connections would start sprouting up. It genuinely went places, and I found it both moving and genuinely surprising, which isn't something I expected with a JRPG. I did take my time with this, and I didn't try to power through it, because this game would have been awful if I had just been following a guide and not taking time to appreciate the individual stories. I treated it like a bedtime story, and I would play an hour or so before bed. Really great.
    • The world of this game is massive, yet fully realized. Each of the locales has their own flavor, and they really made for a fun time. Visiting in the past and the present was something I thought would be repetitive, but it was actually quite fun seeing how things had changed over time.
    • The Boss battles in this game were great. They had me thinking strategically, and although I never really struggled, I did have to play thoughtfully to succeed. Luckily I've beaten 6 other Dragon Quest games up to this point, so I was able to manage.
    • Party chat is amazing. I would literally walk around spamming the party chat button, because the characters are top notch. Also Ruff is the funniest party member alive, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
    • I know I started with a con that this game was super long, but honestly the biggest pro for this game is that it's super long. There's just SO MUCH GAME in this game. I almost didn't want it to end at the end of the game. I've already decided to save the post-game for after I've beaten the other games in the series, but man, what a great experience.

So those are my thoughts as a (no longer) newbie to the series. I'm starting to feel more and more like a veteran as I play through these, and it's cool seeing all the callbacks throughout the series. There are times when I get something like Ra's mirror or see certain repeated locales that just make me smile.

I'll be diving into DQVIII on the 3ds next. I'm looking forward to it after seeing it so heavily hyped on this reddit.

Do the scenes from previous games in XI spoiler a lot?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2022 04:24 PM PST

    Hello Internet people!

This Christmas, I decided to get DQ XI S after feeling a bit robbed that it was released twice on Steam. I played the original basically the moment after it came out for PC and loved it. Now, I bit the bullet and bought the Definitive Version to play through all the new stuff as well as play the game again in general.

Of the other games I've only played IX (which was my very first DQ game) and started with VIII a while back (played as far as getting Angelo on the team), but put it down again, because my schedule became too cramped.

My question is whether the scenes in Tickington from previous games spoiler a lot, because I do plan on completing the whole series at some point in the future.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day, kind stranger!

What games are "okay" to use a guide for?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2022 03:07 PM PST

Obviously you're not gonna go to hell for using the internet to see how to play a video game right but which ones would you say would be a little unfair to figure out on your own? I used one for 1 and 2 but am gonna go guideless for 3+. There's no way I'd've been able to piece them together without sinking in way more free time than I have.

Can Dragon Quest X still be played on the Wii?

Title says it all, I read about the wii version having an offline mode or something and that's why I wanted to ask you guys if it really is the case. I speak a fair bit of japanese and I probably wouldn't have a problem with it either. Thank you for your answers in advance.

(Possible spoiler so I'm marking it as such just in case) I'm doing everything that the guide has told me to do up until this point but no matter what I do the game won't trigger Lee to tell me what she needs to for the game to progress. Please help
